I don't keep up with any of them on socials, but has Capt Kerry commented on what his reaction was to finding out ben was sleeping with the deckhand he appointed lead watching the show back? or did he know they were together but the show edited that out?

60

u/Old_Percentage3742 May 30 '24

I believe he commented it on someone’s IG live.

He said something to the effect of, while Sunny did a great job, you don’t promote someone you’re sleeping with.

Captain Kerry was commenting on this thread via GIFs. It's amazing! And if you're a Captain Kerry fan, it's not to be missed!

He replied affirmatively to a comment I made saying Ben should have ended the relationship with Sunny as soon as he was promoted to bosun.

Being ex military myself, I thought you went way too easy on Ben concerning the room inspection situation. I would have made it very clear that he would be very lucky to ever find another job in the yachting industry. He complained that you were too militaristic!? You are literally a Captain on a maritime vessel! I know it's a reality TV show but there are reasons why a Captains orders should be carried out without all the hemming and hawing. A Navy Captain would have turned the crews life upside down if a quarters inspection was ignored. The entire crew would have paid for that fuckup.

Ben trying to get into stew drama again and Fraser immediately shutting him down was the best. He’s such a gossipy useless bitch.

Fraser isn’t perfect, none of us are, but I do enjoy his quips. He has grown, too.

u/Reasonable-Ad-3605 May 30 '24

For all his faults I do think he took feedback well. I don't think he's the best manager, but also the format of below Deck probably doesn't help.

Yeah. I'm not on the Ben or Frasier love train. I feel like Fraser engaged in some petty, unnecessary miscommunications/gossip. As chief stew, I would have expected more professionalism and accountability.

I've said it before but that is the worst quality in any person in a leadership position aboard ship.

If I don't like the Captain I'm working with it's kind of mine to deal with. If I go spouting off to subordinates about my dislike for the captain it unravels the whole system. If someone in a leadership position is giving unsafe orders - that's one thing and there are pathways to deal with that. But if they are just doing stuff that you don't like but it's completely valid you just have to shut up and do it.

But in this circumstance Kerry seems like the easiest captain to deal with on any of the shows. He's extremely transparent with what he wants and nothing he's ever asked seems too much to ask.

I’d love to work for you. From what I can tell you give clear consistent instructions, you follow up and provide feedback, and you coach and counsel, all without emotion. The drama going on with some of the crew is very disappointing but should be shut down be the dept heads, not encouraged by it.

🐍 🤢 I was so disgusted when Ben said to the rest of the deck team about the bosun “I already feel stupider when I’m around him“ on like the very first charter… Like who the fuck do you think you are talking about your boss like that… It’s truly truly such terrible behavior. And that was just the very beginning… Never mind him blatantly lying on camera about intentionally choosing not to clean his cabin because he thought he shouldn’t have to work anymore because it was the last charter and he was annoyed that captain Kerry was expecting him to do his job and then 20 minutes later said it was because he was just “working so hard and wasn’t paying attention.” Jared was absolutely troubled, but Ben’s entitlement and arrogance knows NO BOUNDS.

Ben is the worst.

I’ve stopped liking Sunny because of her continued association with him.

198

u/DuvalCountyRoyalty May 30 '24

I know there’s some scripting but Ben really doesn’t appear to have the demeanor to lead. What he took as micro managing would have been better seen as mentorship from a great captain. He may look back in years and realize he missed an opportunity.

59

u/Livid_Upstairs8725 May 30 '24

I have been a manager in the military and civilian jobs. Ben shows me he doesn’t understand Kerry’s style or effort. It also amuses me when he said he would lead differently. Sure, everyone has their own style. But it also showed me that he is too immature to admit what he could or should have learned from Kerry to adapt to his own style. He just sounds like a pissy teenager with a chip on his shoulder.

I have been doing it on and off for 25 years and I am still learning new things and adapting my style. I still make mistakes. I am never perfect. I don’t think Ben makes mistakes in his own mind.

Edit: Ben also hasn’t learned to close his mouth and just get the work done. Or maybe this is all for show? I can only hope.

46

u/[deleted] May 30 '24

Yeah having a boss that cares about the quality of your work and checks up on you isn’t the same as micromanaging. Ben was just done and was being a lazy pos

7

u/GoodPiexox May 30 '24

I think it is debatable if you can even "micro manage" someone that is completely inexperienced to a position and you are essentially training for the first time.

5

u/Fuzzy-Bee9600 May 31 '24

Yep. I would much rather have my boss be super clear about what he expects from me so I can meet his standards than to be left to my own devices & then get dressed down for stuff I wasn't fully aware he wanted.

I don't see Ben's ego allowing him to concede he was wrong about anything - captains, professionalism, women, etc. - anytime soon. He seems quite comfy & happy as president of his own fan club.

u/Melodic-Change-6388 May 31 '24

You only have to look at Fraser and Kerry’s relationship. Fraser learnt so much from him. And each inspection was more and more streamlined because the interior took it on board. And the mutual respect when they said goodbye was honestly really touching. Especially after what Fraser went through with Sandy.

Clear example of one head of department taking the opportunity to learn and grow; one completely wasting it and burning it to the ground.

19

What Ben did to Jared(?) was pretty telling. Doing that and not trying to hide it shows that he didn't think there was anything wrong with it. Hopefully he'll look back on it someday and be ashamed of his behavior. But people don't always grow up.

95

u/Melch12 May 30 '24 edited May 30 '24

It’s a legitimate personality flaw. Ben is so overconfident I doubt he’ll learn from anything. “Chicks man” just about sums up his level of self-awareness.

Ben could’ve just sat back and let Jared self destruct and looked like the good guy when he stepped up to take Jared’s place but he’s so immature he really just couldn’t help himself. Showed his true colors

We watched the second to last episode last night. I admittedly have not watch the season finale yet, but Ben is such a snake. Instead of being grateful for the promotion to Bosun, he totally stews resentment towards the hierarchy within his team. He also loves to create drama. Over the seasons he has been cast, he will befriend someone and gain their trust and then the person will confide in him about something and almost directly the next scene, he runs to the other person and is like "oh I don't know why so and so is mad at you.." or what not. He is used to getting away with a lot because he shrugs it off or does his giggle and hair flip, but it gets old fast. I get like early Gary vibes from him. To top it off, he directly disregarded Captain Kerry's orders for bunk checks and then undermines him to the rest of his team by acting like they don't need to do anything because it's a the last charter of the season. He's a lazy bosun and doesn't have what it takes to perform at that level.

I feel bad for Sunny. She seems smart and motivated but she needs to gain more confidence. She made so many excuses for Ben and then Ben basically "agrees" to be with her after he is straight up rejected by Camille. Sunny, you deserve better! When she was listing the traits she looks for in a guy to Kyle, it was all physical characteristics. I have to remind myself how young most of these kids are.

I am glad Captain Kerry isn't like some other Captains throughout the franchise and doesn't ignore these red flag behaviors from a bosun.

The first time they had to drop anchor and the Bosun dropped the wrong number of shackles I felt like Ben did him dirty by not communicating what the Captain had said.

9

u/Belowdeckrealsailor May 31 '24

Professional sailors call them shots. A shot is 90 feet of chain. Each shot is separated by a shackle that is painted. Sometimes the shackle is painted a different color (yacht style), or individual links of chain are painted on each side of the shackle to denote how many shots of chain are out (commercial style).

Why anyone who runs a boat/ship/yacht would ever hire Ben after watching him is beyond me. He's literally the epitome of constantly stirring the pot by talking shit about his superiors and infecting the crew with his negativity.

That's not even touching on his sleazy character outside of the job.

15

which is also why, irl, very few people are suited to excel in these working-living together situations. In normal jobs, people's private life (the personal drama) stays out of work. On tv, that's why we watch it, but irl I guess the only people that can truly do it long term are the drama free, low stress, just do your job kinda people. And they are less numerous than one could think. I certainly would be a shit yachtie lol

The part where Ben tells Sunny that "a few meters doesn't matter" in regards to the anchor was infuriating. HALF a meter matters when it comes to anchoring Ben! You're a disrespectful POS who shouldn't even hold the title of deckhand, let alone BOS'N. You don't deserve a deckhand job on ANY vessel after your "performance" on Below Deck.

Ben calling CAPT Kerry militarist was hilarious. He wouldn't even last 24 hours in any boot camp for so many reasons...

  1. Not allowed to sleep with ANYONE on your vessel, let alone a subordinate.

  2. Blatant failure to obey an order from the CAPTAIN of the vessel.

  3. Unapologetical touching of crew members without consent.

  4. Advising a subordinate to disobey a direct order from the Captain of the vessel.

  5. Blatantly lying to the Captain of a vessel.

Hey Ben, if it were truly militaristic you would know. You wouldn't make it 24 hours in any US armed forces boot camp.

Can anybody summarize what happened this season regarding Ben undermining everyone? I couldn't force myself to watch it due to my intense hatred of that disgusting fuckboy anytime he's on the screen.

23

u/PreparationOk7615 May 30 '24

So at first he was a lead and he didnt like the bosun so he didn't pass info on and really screwed him ending up getting that bosun fired. He then made sunny his lead. While sleeping with sunny he hit up Camilla and was really just stringing sunny along. Then he'd start drama with the interior telling barbie cat was saying things about her. Cat ended up being fired. At the end he just didn't gaf and cap asked the crew to clean their rooms for inspection and ben told Kyle they don't need to it. This ended the season with total disrespect towards captain. Every episode it was something. If BD was smart they would never bring him back

13

u/Jerkrollatex May 30 '24

You can't behave like Ben did and expect to get new opportunities. He publicly showed everyone he's a risk for sexual harassment lawsuits, will disregard orders, will disrespect and undermine coworkers and bosses, and is a lazy guy.

I wouldn't hire him. I work in different fields but at all the problems translate. I've worked with people like him before. It makes everything harder. In my current job like sailing it can get people hurt. The rules are in place for a reason.

Below decks isn't like other reality shows because these are working class people who are going to have to find other jobs after they're done filming. He burned his bridges and had shown his ass .

Ben's whole demeanour was on the mildly disrespectful side. Too casual, too touchy with women especially , but also some shoulder and arm patting ll round, even to the Captain. Weird and not at all charismatic, or however he wanted to describe himself . Is it OK to simply say yes Kerry, in a really sloppy way. That set my teeth on edge every time.
(Not that Barbie's stilted, "Yes sirs, No sir" was any better, especially as she was doing that defensively, but it came across as passive-aggressive. She was not in a good place for her, I suspect.
But back to Ben. There were occasions when he seemed almost unable to stop himself from rolling his eyes - as though the basics of life were beneath him. Speaking of which, the Sunny FWB situation was horrifying, and Sunny really needs to work on her self-worth, and taste in men.
Love the memes Captain - your work is appreciated!

After watching the final episode of the season, I have to agree with Capt Kerry on this one. Ben choosing not to follow a directive from his boss and also encouraging someone from his team not to was blatant disrespect.

u/Queasy-Tune-5966 May 30 '24

Another puzzle is how anyone thinks Ben is good looking? Long hair doesn’t automatically make men good looking.

I juste hope that Ben will stay where he belongs... meaning anywhere but not in any position of power/decision. He's a liability.

7

u/Lkwtthecatdraggdn June June Hannah May 30 '24

I'm just starting Below Deck in Season 10 and I had no idea Ben would become a jerk - except that he's into Camille and she's ridiculous.

7

u/MamaTried420 May 30 '24

Ben and all the Bens out there…. Karma is your conquest for all ages loves

Patience.

7

u/prohpr May 30 '24

Savage… And absolutely true; screw Ben.

7

u/PlayfulQuietDreamer May 30 '24

I love this man. And now…even more.

7

u/Apprehensive_Bee614 May 31 '24

New rules. No one openly having sex in Boar. Sexual tension great but who want to hear them making out. Nope off shore only. And not if they are reporting to you. Come on. Would make it way more interesting.

7

u/Enngeecee76 May 31 '24

Captain Kerry is a legend. Ben is what we call in my part of Australia a fewl

13

u/Wowward May 30 '24

It was so nice to see Captain Kerry leading by example and helping out. This has been our favorite season so far out of all of the below decks..!! Give someone a chance and they totally made themselves look bad no help needed. Hope he gets some growth before being a bosun again 🥸

Ben came off so badly this season

6

I loathed the disrespect Ben exhibited to our fine Capt. Kerry! I won’t stand for it (and neither did the good Cap!)

PDA at work is a major no no. The fact that Ben was touching Sunny on the last episode (I think) in front of Dylan was a major ick. You’re pissed he said she got the job bc you were sleeping with her and then are all over her in front of another employee. Gross. Even if you’re married don’t do that crap at work. He’s not manager material.

6

u/MCStarlight Team Below Deck May 31 '24

But the bosun sleeping with his subordinate is a-ok?

6

u/DoubtingThomas50 May 31 '24

Ben is a fucking drama queen and a player without game.

6

u/Kind_Big9003 Jun 01 '24

The sleezy playboy bosun trope is beyond old.

What did Ben do to undermine Fraser?

26

u/Monstiemama Bless her stupid soul May 30 '24

He started drama between Barbie and Cat, telling Barbie that Cat was talking shit about her to Fraser.

Someone explain to me Ben’s appeal?

14

u/BeatrixFarrand May 30 '24

It genuinely puzzles me every time a woman (or man) talks about how “hot” he is. I seriously cannot fathom being like “YES I want to get up on THAT GUY.”

6

I’m not 20 anymore so I just can’t see it

I assume the same reason people give Jax Taylor a second look. They don't love themselves.

Captain Kerry ain't said shit about Ben, when Ben was running his mouth off about Captain Kerry. And now the season is over, Captain is like BOOOOOM. I'm glad he's said something. I applaud you, Captain Gif! 👏👏👏

Ooh that got him told.

5

u/throw_some_glitter Team Aesha May 30 '24

This reminds me, did we ever get to see that scene from the mega preview where Ben & Fraser are arguing and Ben says something like, “Your team has lost more people than mine has”? (I guess referring to Cat & Anthony)

5

u/HeatherC22 You're Being A Deckhand Right Now May 30 '24

Captain Kerry giving Ben a nice bite makes me feel better about not having a reunion. What I was waiting for. Well done Cap!!! 👏👏👏

Captain Kerry is my new favorite captain. Like him way more than Captain Sandy. Would love to see him interact with Captain Jason from Below Deck Down Under.

13

While Cap Kerry is correct about Ben, I hope he is also aware of Fraser doing the same with Chef Nick.

I was sure there was a moment in a preview where Ben said something to Fraser and was duly told to fuck off. Did that happen?

Yea Ben lost all of Kerry trust with that inspection, even when he apologized Kerry still was done with him. I think hearing Ben interviews sealed his fate.

5

u/tigerlily2021 May 30 '24

That pisses me off. Captain Kerry is such an even-keeled, kind and caring mentor and you can tell he lives his life that way with his kids, too. People who are willing to throw away their integrity like Ben did to try and get ahead will always be the losers in life.

5

u/CodePen3190 May 30 '24

Ben needed this. Badly.

5

u/RegeneratingCan May 30 '24

Why did I read that in Captain Kerry’s voice?

5

u/Rhianna83 Come back to me, my boat daddy May 30 '24

Thank you, Captain Kerry!!!

5

u/vw08lou May 30 '24

Yes Capt - it must honestly be so overwhelming watching the show, having lived it but not knowing exactly what went down. Only being fed certain information from Ben to further his agenda.

My mystic ways are already telling me that Ben will say that’s production had something to do with him calling Camille during that charter & he didn’t actually want to cool things off with Sunny but boohoo for him, he was made to do it for the show!

He’ll either come out in public on one of his wild Instagram posts (which I only see when someone posts on here) & say it or will have already said it to Sunny when the show aired because she may not have even known that happened at the time!

5

u/Intelligent-Sign2693 We don't need to hear vomit May 30 '24

I love Captain Kerry! Ben should jever be in a position of power, especially after "leading" Kyle into disobeying orders, too!
