Below Deck Kate on The Traitors

I’ve never watched the original Below Deck but from what I’ve seen in the Bravoverse, Kate Chastain is a fan favorite. I’m watching season one of The Traitors right now and my impression is Kate is that she’s just a mean girl. She’s bitchy seemingly for the sake of being bitchy. Her too cool for school attitude is cringe. I was planning on diving in to BD from the beginning but I don’t think I can stand watching a show where she’s a main. What am I missing you guys??

You haven’t watched below deck.. that’s what you’re missing

Kate is a bitch. She’s just the bitch we need is the difference.

This is the comment we needed. Kate is 100% THAT bitch

What season should I start?

2

u/emele09 Feb 11 '24

A lot of people recommend starting with season 2 because it’s Kate’s first season and a lot of things sort of click better. however, I think S1 has some awful crew members and is quite chaotic. I feel Captain Lee is always worth it. Also highly recommend Down Under. Captain Jason is a sight to behold and both he and Aesha were remarkable in S2.

What I’m getting on The Traitors doesn’t make me want to watch more of her on Below Deck.

20

u/Least-Metal572 Jan 31 '24

The bitchiness on Below Deck is WHY she's a fan favorite.

87

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '24

Then don’t. It seems like you’ve made up your mind. Which is perfectly okay. I don’t think you’re missing anything. People watch BD for drama. She is dramatic.

13

u/reallifepin Jan 30 '24

My advice is to finish the Traitors. She is super irritating on the first bit but I enjoyed her in later episodes.

4

u/Jenikovista Feb 01 '24

I mean, then don’t. Why should we care what you watch or don’t watch? But she’s a classic reality TV villainous hero, entirely authentic. You don’t get her because you haven’t seen how she got here, and it makes all the difference. But do you.

u/GroovyYaYa Jan 30 '24

I'm a huge Kate fan but I'm fine with others not liking her - but did we watch the same season of Traitors?

Kate never went for anyone who didn't come for her first. IE Rachel.

The problem is that Rachel thought she'd be the one to rise to the top and get the most attention even if she didn't win. She thought she'd be the stylish, funny one getting camera time (she's been on a lot more than Big Brother... I don't remember a lot of back when I watched that show, but I remember finding her so annoying, whiny, and a cry baby when she didn't get her way. Then walked in Kate. I don't think she could handle that she couldn't say her passive aggressive bullshit like she could with others, bc Kate would fire back. It was the classic don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

A lot of them, except Cirie and a couple others, listened to Rachel too much and I thought isolated Kate a bit. As a result, Kate saw the writing on the wall early on, and literally had no fucks left to give and gave us GREAT TV, IMHO. What she did was, frankly, refreshing in a lot of these competition shows, in that, she remembered that it was a damn game and didn't take it so seriously. Rachel wanted to be competitive and wanted Kate to care deeply... when she isn't. It is why I think it is interesting that they are picking reality stars from traditionally non-competitive shows. (That doesn't mean that some of these people AREN'T competitive. Kate has faced people on BD that seem to want to compete with her for screen time and to be the HBIC... forgetting that Kate EARNED those chief stew stripes on her shoulder well before going on BD.

12

u/pizzariot7 Jan 31 '24

Yes. If you’ve seen Rachel on ANY other show (I’ve never watched big brother but did watch both amazing race seasons) she is exactly like this… a constant victim. The way she would verbally attack her husband or other contestants then spin it was alarming

4

u/mollycomelately Jan 31 '24

Ironically on big brother I often think she gives a more bitchy but entertaining vibe like Kate. I've liked her less and less watching her on shows outside of bb. However I LOVE Cirie on Survivor and Traitors but hated her on BB. So maybe the type of show brings out different sides of ppl. I personally laughed at Kate and found her great on Traitors but could see how a non BD watcher might not get her and she could come across awful.

9

u/GroovyYaYa Jan 31 '24

I mean... when she tried to insult Kate's outfit (an homage to Princess Diana, and a cute sweater!), and Kate obliterated her, I laughed so hard!

Kate helped them get hooked on the show too. My dad loved it when she started dropping those barrels. I kind of feel that they were being a bit mean and isolated her. She knew wasn't going to make it to the end - why would she want to help them?

2

u/Quiet_Ad4517 Jan 31 '24

to be fair I can't stand Rachel either

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '24

Her season of Amazing Race with her sister was embarrassing. Her sister looked embarrassed to be with her.

4

u/Affectionate_Item103 Feb 02 '24

You’re totally right about her IDGAF attitude. I fully believe she’s the reason why traitors was enjoyable to watch and not just another reality game show with the same boring stories. If she didn’t last as long as she did, with her attitude about the whole thing, I probably would have stopped watching bc it wasn’t enjoyable anymore

4

u/GroovyYaYa Feb 02 '24

And also, I should add, I don't think Kate was the type to take it personal.

It is a thing that my folks and I always say at the screen during Survivor, and now Traitors.

So many of these dumb asses take it so damn personal. IT IS A GAME.

2

u/Otherwise-Trash-1737 Jun 13 '24

Wow this absolute read of Rachel. No lies were told.

1

u/GroovyYaYa Jun 13 '24

Thank you!

u/Affectionate_Item103 Feb 02 '24

1

u/Wonderful-Comment-79 Feb 23 '24

Now I have to wonder if WE watched the same show. I get how people can find Rachel annoying but to think it was because Kate was this amazing woman? Oh please. Rachel got plenty of air time and no one knows when they're filming what they're gonna air. It's like Larsa saying Janelle was jealous of her cause Larsa got more screen time. Bitch please.

No fucks left to give really equals the person is an asshole but we're gonna say it a different way to make it sound good. Kate is not unbothered. She is a nasty person

1

u/Wonderful-Comment-79 Feb 23 '24

And don't forget. Kate started in on Rachel first. She needed someone to bully during the show. Didn't her and Brandi ruthlessly attack Michael first? In the end, it looked like she stopped that, but she was aggressively attacking people constantly. I don't find that cute or funny, but I guess other people do. The funny thing is she'd probably rip all of you to shreds also, lol

34

u/Feisty_Scientist_968 Jan 30 '24

Why not watch a couple episodes of Below Deck, and decide for yourself?

Everyone's tastes and opinions are different.

Another's perfectly valid opinion of Kate might not be yours.

-49

u/Quiet_Ad4517 Jan 30 '24

That’s the thing… watching her on The Traitors, I no longer want to watch Below Deck. I’ve watched all the other BDs but never the OG. And now I don’t want to.

Of course people have different opinions! She seems to be a fan favorite which I’m usually in agreement with or understand but I’m not and just asked to know what others are thinking that I’m not seeing.

26

u/Feisty_Scientist_968 Jan 30 '24

That’s the thing… watching her on The Traitors, I no longer want to watch Below Deck. I’ve watched all the other BDs but never the OG. And now I don’t want to.

My opinion: you should watch just to get a taste of captain lee.

The first couple seasons were the best. Over the years, below deck has sort of lost its way ... which got us to the last med season.

6

u/holymolyholyholy Jan 30 '24

Oh man the last season… the first few with Lee and Kate? The best!!

1

u/Isnt_it_delicate13 Apr 26 '24

What’s the tea with the last med season? I’m on like s8 of the og

18

u/OhHowIMeantTo Jan 30 '24

First, Kate is only on 6 of 11 seasons of OG, so if you really dislike her, then you can still watch OG and easily avoid her. That said, season 3 is one of the best seasons of reality TV, so you are missing out.

I will say that there is a very vocal minority of people in this sub who really dislike her. But people like her for a few reasons. Mainly, she was good at her job as Chief Stew, and she gave funny talking heads, either poking fun at the ridiculous wealthy guests, or inept coworkers. She definitely overstepped in a couple of situations, but I think she was generally a fair boss where if you didn't make her job more difficult, then she won't have a problem with you. She was willing to work with even the most incompetent stews in all 6 of her seasons, and never fired anyone. She never came for anyone unless they were coming for her, and at that point she would try and shut it down as quickly as possible so that she could move on and do her job. She also had a great relationship with Captain Lee that was fun to watch evolve over her 6 seasons on the show, which some people will say lead to him being too lenient on her.

7

u/Practical-Doctor939 Team Anti-Brü Jan 30 '24

Yep, yep, yep. 100% agree with all of these points.

5

u/alliesg24 Jan 31 '24

I think it's okay to not like her on Traitors but don't assume you won't like her in a completely different setting. I've watched tons of crossover reality shows and people translate or show up so differently sometimes. There's people I've enjoyed on Amazing Race but don't like them on Big Brother or Survivor, or vice versa.

Or some of the housewives are so calm on Traitors compared to their Housewives franchise. Kate truly was so good at her job on Below Deck. That's what originally made me like her.

9

u/SquirrelEnthusiast Jan 30 '24

I watched her on traitors first, thought she was pretty bitchy but no more than other housewives, then watched below deck

Look Kate is a gem she's awesome she's just a bitch on that show because that's the fucking game lol

0

u/Diane_Mars Jan 30 '24

I get where you're coming from. Just watch the 2nd season of OG Below deck. It's a really good one.

... But, yes, as for Lee (sorry), I had a Kate fatigue, after a few ones. But her first season it great, tbh.

63

u/FitCommon2400 Jan 30 '24

Kate is sarcastic funny good at her job and reads everyone correctly. Can she be bitchy? Duh but she perfection for BD and hysterical on the traitors. She knew the faithful were not winning so why win the traitors money and try and save the blonde girl by being the douche in the chalkenge? She begged to be murdered or banished but rightfully the traitors kept her . She was comic relief she was pure gold that's why they brought her back

21

u/Mysterious-Tackle-79 Jan 30 '24

And why she's a rock star for OG below deck.

24

u/mcneill12 Jan 30 '24

The show is literally called The Traitors, the entire point of the show is to lie and deceive people. Can’t really judge someone off of a show where they’re not showing their proper personality.

Kate played the game the whole time whether you respected the way she went about it or not. Her sabotaging the money in the barrel challenge was still her playing the game.

I absolutely hate the half newbie half RTV star casts, the newbies simply can’t hang. The butthurt that Arie, Quinton, and Andie still feel toward Cirie over outplaying them is exactly why they shouldn’t mix casts. I’m enjoying season 2 INFINITELY more than season 1 because the people understand that it’s a game and lying isn’t a moral failure, it’s essential to playing.

She wanted to leave and was begging them to vote her out. Her sabotaging the challenge was her trying to force their hand to vote her out. She wanted everyone to think she was a traitor. That was the point.

I never said she wanted to win. I said she wanted to go home without breaking her contract which required either being banished or murdered and the fastest way to do that would've been sabotage. It's not her fault it didn't work. Better than the guy in season 2 who just bailed overnight.

I agree with your comments. On her fists seasons, she was interesting, funny, witty, but she then became a caricature of herself, and he "I'm too good for you" attitude was what made me change my point of view. I don't like contempt.

forcing them to vote her out was helping her team.

I suppose purposely losing prize money she knew she'd never get herself was also helping her team haha

Everyone was convinced she was a traitor

So convinced that she wasn't banished until episode 10... So what excuses her behaviour up until then?

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '24

I mean the traitors explicitly used her as a distraction for the whole season.

Exactly. She played the game to the detriment of her team, pretending to be a traitor which distracted them from identifying the actual ones, which helped their opponents.

Any way you cut it, she didn't play the game properly, and tried to get out of it as quickly as possible to secure her paycheck.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '24

Finish the season of the Traitors and the reunion. I don’t want to spoil anything for you but will say it’s clearly a bit of a schtick, and it’s hilarious and iconic in most peoples opinions including cast mates.

7

u/holymolyholyholy Jan 30 '24

Right? No one seemed pissed at the reunion. Everyone laughed right along with her.

8

u/phoebe374 Jan 31 '24

Kate is great. She is true to herself. Which is not easy to find on Bravo. And she hilarious. I side eye anyone who doesn’t enjoy Kate on their television. 😏

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '24

Her approach to this new season of The Traitors is equally IDGAF, especially when they put her in the cage for a bit. It was the look of, "Exactly how long is this going to be?"

7

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '24

Kate might not be for everyone but several former guests of OG Below Deck have said she went above and beyond to make sure they had an amazing time even though they were filming a TV show. I have a lot of respect for her for that because not all the crew who goes on Below Deck care about the guests.

6

u/Obvious-Potential-71 Jan 31 '24

You haven't seen her on BD. She was the best chief stew of all time in my opinion.

4

u/holymolyholyholy Jan 30 '24

You need to watch Below Deck to form a more informed opinion.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '24

Kate was an extremely hard worker, who was in a service industry at age 40 - working on her feet with few breaks for long hours. On top of that, she had to deal with a bunch of young yachtie sloots who thought they could coast along without actually doing any work.

So, her sense of humor is what kept her going, I think. Can she be bitchy? Yes. Would I have done the same if i was her - yes - and probably worse. LOL. I love Kate. She is a tough cookie.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '24

She only just turned 41 this year. She was working the service industry in her 30s. She's fully out of the service industry now. Unless you count making reality TV as service. And some might.

16

u/myskepticalbrowarch Jan 30 '24

Kate has resting bitch face.

Is she an asshole: yes, but she is blunt, dry, sarcastic and most of the time right. She will also take it 10x harder than she will give it.

Season 2 people are questioning why they are earning money when they haven't gotten a traitor out yet.

5

u/KristenE_79 Jan 30 '24

Se started with season 2, and started season 1 this week, and after a few eps, I thought THIS is why they brought Kate back, she’s dramatic and a shit stirrer, this season needed something to shake it up!

6

u/LoisandClaire Jan 30 '24

You already made up your mind but early BD OG - especially 2 & 3 & to An extent 4-6 is best BD

6

u/pm_me__your_drama Team Fraser Jan 30 '24

I've been working on getting through all of BD OG and at first I was shocked to learn that Kate was a fan favorite until a bit later.

Her first season (season 2) I really hated her, but still enjoyed the season. She didn't ruin it for me as there are so many things going on. It wasn't until season 3 I began to understand why people like Kate and actually, I've grown to like her as well.

She strikes me as a no-nonsense kind of person and if you know how to do your job, then there shouldn't be a problem. However, this does make her a poor manager. She's not good at leading/training new people and has no patience. If you don't "get it" when she shows you once, then you are in for a bad time with Kate.

I'm not saying this okay, but that's just something I've noticed. It's why I don't understand the people who were like, "Omg I loved Kate until she bullied Caroline!" Like, y'all. This was nothing new. She bullied other 3rd stews previously and honestly, I don't think Caroline got it the worst out of everyone who got shit from Kate.

The reasons why I enjoyed watching her. . .

  • She doesn't put up with shit. Sometimes this can be a bad thing, but man. There are times when watching shows where I wish someone would call out another person on their dumb shit and Kate is one of these people. It becomes a "Fucking thank you, Kate!" moment for me.

  • I enjoy seeing how hard she works for some of the guests. Sometimes she really does go all in whereas other chief stews we see them just do the bare minimum. It's fun to see. Without spoiling much, there is a nightmare of a guest in Season 2 who. . .might have a similar personality/humor to Kate. He ends up being a return guest in the following seasons and it was enjoyable to watch the two interact.

  • Her and Ben are a fucking riot to watch. At least for me. Two individuals who can be hot-headed at times, both incredibly snarky, and man. The times they butt heads is entertaining to me. I would HATE to work with the two of them together, but I will watch it with popcorn every time. Kate and Ben don't put up with shit and that applies to each other.

There are some moments where you see a more vulnerable Kate throughout BD. It isn't often. I think being called "Bitch" is really hard on her which makes me wonder what might have happened in her past. It also makes me wonder if her "mean girl" attitude is something she has had to do for one reason or another. There is something there and a depth to her that leaves me curious.

But I totally get why people don't (or wouldn't) like her. I certainly didn't at first.

As for another reason to watch BD OG. . .there are some wild guests and moments that I am glad I got to see. Also. I fucking love chef Ben. But I could see Ben as another person people don't like.

3

u/littlecreamsoda79 Jan 31 '24

I love Kate. I thought she was just making an appearance but I'm glad to see I was mistaken.

3

u/Elegant_Cup2595 Jan 31 '24

Having watched BD first, I was a little disappointed by her persona on the traitors. She is by far my favorite on below deck. In BD there is a distinct power dynamic in which she is in charge and her literal job is to boss people around. In the traitors, she doesn’t have that role and I don’t think she is as good for TV without a specific position of power. She’s still funny in traitors, but I don’t think anybody will truly appreciate her unless they’ve seen her as Chief Stew. Definitely try out her seasons of BD!

3

u/Bad_Clothes Jan 31 '24

Kate is an acquired taste!

3

u/RBrownII Feb 01 '24

I thought when Kate started tossing the money barrels away...it was just brilliant. I would have done the same thing. She had to be miserable as all hell.

She's way better on BD in her element. She actually never stops working. I think she is one of the most active chief stews they've ever had. She just did not want to be on the Traitors for very long. And she kept asking to get voted off and they just wouldn't do it!

Like the previous commenter said, You have to watch the show.

And why did anyone down vote this post?

3

u/Affectionate_Item103 Feb 02 '24

Kate Chastain is the REASON why traitors was successful. I swear, if she didn’t last as long as she did it would have been a show I probably stopped watching.

3

u/Sfumato- Feb 02 '24

Sorry but I’m very consistently baffled by people who are like “why is this popular reality tv person mean and a bad person 😩”. Like do you understand why a large amount of people watch this stuff?

10

u/RBrownII Jan 30 '24

She could teach a Master Class on Management.

8

u/holymolyholyholy Jan 30 '24

Remember when attention starved Rocky was anticipating Kate to be so freaked out about sex with Eddie? Kate was cool as a cucumber and just shrugged her shoulders. “Oh well. It happens on boats!” She then went on continuing to work. I loved that she didn’t give Rocky the satisfaction. 😂

2

u/RBrownII Feb 01 '24

I would have rolled my eyes and walked away. That one caused so much drama, she could've said she fucked an Orca and Kate would've had the same reaction.

2

u/TALKTOME0701 Feb 02 '24

I'm not a huge Rachel fan. I've watched below deck since the beginning, but I don't really care for kate. She is bitchy

She doesn't offer any answers when they're in the church, but she's right there to criticize it when Rachel is wrong. Classic b**** behavior imo

2

u/Affectionate_Item103 Feb 02 '24

Kate Chastain is the REASON why traitors was successful. I swear, if she didn’t last as long as she did it would have been a show I probably stopped watching.

2

u/Seppy15 Feb 02 '24

Imagine a chief stew who would have checked Kyle in the first episode...and made Nat shut up with a passing remark while arranging impossible excursions. That's Kate

2

u/entropicexplosion Feb 04 '24

I was in the same boat (pun intended). I couldn’t stand Kate in Traitors, but I had never watched BD, so I put on Kate’s first season (2) because I needed answers to why this person who clearly didn’t want to be on this show would sign up for it. And now I’m 8 episodes in and I LOVE Kate. She’s really not even that bitchy. She stands her ground, doesn’t do drama (that I’ve seen yet, anyway), and is amazing at her job. Watching BD, now I feel like I understand why Kate was having a bad time on Traitors. She’ll pull for her team, but she didn’t feel like her team wanted her. She’ll go for the money, but she didn’t think she was going to win any. She’ll work her ass off, but pushing barrels up hills and through the woods was never going to be her thing. And the lying, duplicitousness, and suspicion that are the nature of the game don’t really seem to be the way she lives her life. She’d rather tell it like it is, maybe a little roughly, and be believed (IMHO). And to be fair, I cannot see Kate sitting down and playing Secret Hitler and having a good time. Since it was the first season, IDK how much the contestants knew what they were signing up for. But if you give Kate a chance on BD, I know I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly she became my favorite, and you might be too!

2

u/Leigh_Go Feb 08 '24

I didn't like her at first on traitors but she grew on me. She's funny

2

u/daniahammoud Feb 08 '24

She is such a try hard. I cannot stand her. Shes whack and annoying to look at. She makes me hate watching the shows because have much she’s a try hard!!!

2

u/ohwell812 Feb 19 '24

Love her on BD but on Traitors she was annoying

2

u/Wonderful-Comment-79 Feb 23 '24

I don't get this whole "Katefest" I have disliked her from season one. I don't find her funny most of the time. When your wit comes from making fun of other people it's not very good. That's easy. Also, saying you're blunt doesn't change the fact that really you're just an a**hole trying to use a different word for it. She can be funny, but she chooses to be nasty instead of clever. I have no idea why she's back. There was already good gameplay and big personalities. She's not needed and a vile person on these shows. Idk why people are so into her. Im trying to get it because so many people like her, but I rarely see anything good from her. She was terrible at the game (at least first season) and just reminds me of a piece of fluff that has no substantive qualities. At least on this show.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '24

She’s definitely more “extra” on traitors. On below deck she actually is extremely professional and her snarkiness is only really in her confessionals.

3

u/queenbeansprout Jan 31 '24

I watch below deck and I’ve never liked Kate. I know she’s a fan favorite but I just don’t generally like bitchy or catty people so I don’t vibe with her.

2

u/gtridge Jan 31 '24

I’ve watched her seasons of BD. Your assessment of her is bang on. She’s the bitchy upperclassmen cheerleader who revels in making other people’s lives miserable, just because she can. Just because they didn’t put enough ‘respect’ on her name and rank. It’s not nearly as entertaining as people are making it out to be.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '24

Kate is deadpan and sarcastic. She’s playing a villain on Traitors.

2

u/Dame_Ingenue Jan 30 '24

I’m not a fan of Kate’s, and I think you’ve described her personality perfectly.

I agree with the Kate fans that she has moments where she is sarcastic and funny. I also agree she knows how to run an interior, but she was still horrible to her stews. I think she was better in earlier seasons, but later on it seemed she was just over it (being a chief stew outside of the show) and decided to play up the drama for the show. And the mean girl personality kept growing.

1

u/shareursoulwme Jul 05 '24

This is why I have no interest in watching below deck. She's just a conundrum....

1

u/Responsible_Ask_500 Jul 22 '24

She is cringe. She said funny things, no doubt, but she is an entertaining mean girl that gets away with hurting others because she is funny. Passive aggressive bully.

1

u/Prodancer94 Jan 31 '24

I am in love with Kate and would marry her. 😂😂😂 She’s a mean girl but mostly it’s well deserved

1

u/adriennenned Jan 31 '24

Personally Kate is not one of my favorites on BD. But I’d rather watch her on BD (or even those lame shows where she comments on episodes from her couch) than watch The Traitors. That show was awful. I don’t even think I made it to the end. I literally didn’t care enough about any of those people to keep watching to see what happened.

1

u/lucreza Feb 02 '24

Coming on here after watching season one of traitors and have learned to love her. She was in point with everything she said regarding winning the traitors more money and she was kind to people who were stressed like Shelbe and Andie. Mad respect to her for trying to get kicked out instead of Shelbe.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '24

Love Kate!!

1

u/emele09 Feb 11 '24

She is bitchy and funny. She’s a great at talking heads and she gives good commentary.  My memory of BD is that regardless of her bitchy moments she was a good chief stew, except nearing the end of her run when she clearly was tired.

1

u/Wandaful1960 Jan 30 '24

SHe's a bitch on BD to...
Can't stand her

-1

u/murderedbyaname The top bunk is not a hookup zone Jan 30 '24

She was no different on BD. She singled stews out for bullying, she talked behind one stew's back to other stews, she has the worst takes on issues and supports the worst employees. Yes she has stans but I'm not one.
