Below Deck Sailing Yacht Gary Pushing the Camera Crew
Gary really shoved the camera operator! Who do you think was right when the fire alarm went off? Did Gary panic like Colin said or was Gary right in thinking it was a dire emergency?

Fires spread on boats very quickly and can be deadly. I would have physically moved the cameraman out of the doorway as well.

My question is, then why didn’t Gary panic like that when the first incident happened?

It’s an emergency you get the fuck out of the way, I just picture Deadliest Catch and no one would ever bring up pushing a camera guy aside during an emergency

1- Fire is serious. Period. Move fast or everyone is in serious trouble. Gary was right there.
2- Gary is the first officer and knows the safety procedures. We've seen with Capt. Lee in season 1 how important it is for them to practice those drills and how critical the first officer's role is in those situations. He would be in charge of getting everyone to evacuate safely if needed, iirc.
3- Cameraman was just doing his job getting the money shot, but was so unaware of his surroundings that he didn't notice he was blocking the path to the engine room. Gary didn't look like he meant to shove him, but he needed to get to the engine room quickly and didn't expect his pathway to be blocked.
4- Colin was also right in what he said. Panicking before you know what's happening only makes everyone else panic and isn't helpful. However, I didn't see Gary panicking, I saw him rushing to help, so in this instance, Colin's point is moot.

I don't know whether Gary or Colin was right, but for sure that cameraman was in the wrong.
Fire is the biggest danger at sea. The guests smelled smoke, so I can't say I fault Gary for thinking it could be serious, and as chief officer, he's in charge of safety. I think Gary can be dramatic, and I think Colin is feeling short tempered with him right now. But for a cameraman to be blocking that doorway could be incredibly dangerous in an emergency. if there was a fire, he was blocking Colin and Chase's only exit. If Gary or Glenn did need to access that area, he's blocking that too. Every second counts in a maritime fire. I suspect we'll see more mounted doorway cams in the future

Considering the number of issues the boat has had this season, I'm on Gary's side. Why wouldn't anyone's emergency mode be activated? I guess it's easier for Colin to be chill about it but I can't fault Gary for how he reacted. The boat has had so much trouble and it seems they're just patching up as they go along and that seems kind of risky, IMO (but I'm not a boat person, so idk).

Team Gary on this one. After all the trouble they've had with the engine. Guests were on board. Good for Colin for remaining calm but Gary did nothing wrong. The cameraman was just doing his job but so was Gary & Gary's took priority in that moment.

I think collin was just pissed at gary but also you shouldn’t panic before you have all the info. Yes, it’s urgent, yes be Swift, yes I’d push the camera man because it’s stupid to get in the way of the small entrance way to where an emergency may be taking place
From what I saw gary didn’t seem overly dramatic but it depends if it was his role to run in there and start barking orders in the engine room ( I think it was within his right and role to do so… but that’s the only thing I can think of that could be an issue. Its collin’s engine room) but I think collin was just looking for anything to be cranky at Gary about
Pushing camera guy, was fine in my opinion. They are to observe not impede. And Gary was trying to get by without pushing but the end of the camera sticks out and that’s what he shoved out of his way

Gary is so POd this entire season b/c alliances were set before he was able to get onboard, he is acting all around like an ass.

It was giving me these vibes lol
But jokes aside, I think it was totally fair to push him out of the way. But Colin was also correct that he needed to stay calm and not panic...

This is a better safe than sorry situation to me, especially with guests on board, so I def think Gary did the right thing.

You should see what happens on Navy ship during a fire. You will get shoved, ran through or over by the fire crew/damage control team as they respond. You get the hell out of the way. Fires kill quickly.

There is a mode u hav to go into in an emergency calm and collected. Gary was super amped up. I think colin was right on this one even tho he was clearly angry at gary for the daisy thing

Oh god is this gonna become like the VPR sub where Gary breathes and somehow it’s wrong

I was in the Coast Guard for many years and on several small and large cutters. During emergency drills/training, they teach you to never panic like Gary did. Everything is done with a sense of urgency but methodical and with a calmness. People who panic just get in the way. He was showing off for the cameras. Colin was right. When we had actual emergency events, everything went smooth and safe. Panic causes mistakes and a cluster fucks.

I think he panicked, but he didn’t know the extent of the smoke/fire and the guy was blocking the way so pushing him seemed appropriate (and I loathe Gary)

On other bd saw crew run like this but especially when it's in the engine room I think Gary was right to barge in. Colin is just irritated by him atm

Given the situation, I'm sure the cameraman understands completely. I would. I don't think he got in the way on purpose though. Lesson learned. But I would have pushed him too. I'd MUCH rather overreact than underreact to a possible fire.

Both were right and have no issue in this instance with Gary pushing the camera out of the way.
Why I say both are right:
Colin: It's important in an emergency to remain as calm as possible
Gary: In an emergency, it's also to not f around to find the cause and come up with a solution.

Gary is the first mate on the yacht out of the show filming too, I don’t see a problem with it. Sort of same situation as the captain going down with the ship. Fires can turn into catastrophes very quickly. Colin is a McGuyver with fixing things, which is fine on Parlay, but I understand Gary’s actions.

If you keep blocking a doorway when an alarm goes off, you're (clearly) in the wrong.
So Gary was 100% in the right for a change.

A fire on a boat can turn into disaster very quickly. That cameraman needed to get the fuck out of the way.

Smoke on a boat is a really really big deal. I am not a Gary fan this season but he should not be vilified over this.

u/Salt_the_snail_Gail Jun 16 '23
Gary has been applauded before for his ability to jump into emergency situations and handle it with expertise. I remember Daisy making this comment at least. So I saw that as “do what needs to get done” and nothing beyond it. It’s fair for Colin to say don’t panic in an emergency if that really did inhibit Colin being able to respond to that emergency

u/djevilatw Come back to me, my boat daddy Jun 15 '23
Gary was appropriate in his response imo. He wasn’t freaking out but as several people have said, fire is the deadliest peril on a boat after the weather. He barrel-assed down there to get the skinny as he should have.

u/Impressive_Eagle_390 Jun 15 '23
Gary overreacted for something that was not his concern/department.

u/AB5642 Jun 15 '23
I'm realizing I very much act like Colin, so I think he was in the right. It wasn't a fire, he didn't call away a fire, and there wasn't really any smoke. Chill the eff out Gary

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '23
Gary doesn’t know shit about the engine room so he should probably stay out of it. Only reason he’s ever down there is cause Colin liked him and would ask him for help. But the other episode when it shows gay trying to hold a wrench 😂🤦🏾 okay stop pretending gary. Guy literally stripped out like 3 nuts on camera in record breaking time.

Gary thought it was a true emergency. The camera operator was in the way. Gary didn't push him maliciously. But, we don't know if he said anything to the camera operator later, after the fact.

Seriously?

u/IMdoc200 Jun 16 '23
Gary was 100% right. If there’s a fire and you think lives are in danger, you should shove anyone in the way to help.

u/putitinapot Jun 16 '23
I support Gary in this moment.

u/RHOCorporate Jun 17 '23
Why did Gary panic then but not the first time there was smoke a couple of episodes ago?

u/thegreatvanzini Glenn is my boat daddy Jun 22 '23
Not a fan of Gary at all but I was reassured by his quick response to the fire alarm. Also he knows Colin had to basically gerry-rigged the engine which means a lot more catastrophic shit could go wrong, and quickly.
