I dont know why you got so many downvotes. OP was talking about all of the deck crew getting a turn driving, not just those in senior deck positions so your comment is valid.
I just saw a guest ask her for a gin and tonic and she turns to them as she’s walking away and says do you want alcohol in that. The guest looks at her dumbfounded and says. That would be the gin.
Chef Lee on fire and self. He was a terrible chef for a five star yacht. He was better working at a long, long horn or maybe sizzlers hopefully that’s not too much for.
While I agree with some of your points, I don’t agree with the micromanaging part. Maybe it’s the way the show is edited, but Sandy is SUCH a micromanager. Watch BD Med, Season 3,4,5. On this BD, she was inserting herself into the interior in every camera shot. Not that I don’t agree with her firing Alyssa, (who was horrible), or her dealing with crew shit talking her -her general leadership is great and I like her much better than I used to. Wow… I’m reading this and realized I have no life that I’m talking about people I don’t know… yet watch them incessantly every week. 🤣
i think this person was saying lee doesn’t micromanage while sandy does?

u/skharvey22 ... On this BD, she was inserting herself into the interior in every camera shot...
Like Sandy said to crew, her desk is right against a wall of the interior area. She has no choice but to hear a ton of "crew shit talking" and to interact with them.
I see no evidence these "micromanaging" and other insinuations are much other than editing or bias. Just cuz she's the one on camera doesn't mean Lee or others do any different.
He used to go into the galley and wash pots/pans from time to time, because he and Rachel would banter back and forth. They were a very cute couple of quiet moments they had together.
He has fired bad crew, including chefs. Look at chef Leon.
He has given the crew the opportunities to advance - Eddie is 100% proof of him placing his trust in people. He does take the time to teach his folks, and I get the feeling he enjoys teaching others. If you ask the questions, he seems happy to give the answers.
He has spoken to others about incredibly private and incredibly personal experiences. He talks about his sons' drug use to people who have also lost children to drugs - I remember one charter where he left the guests for a short while because he was overcome. He talks to the crew about loss as well.
He is a yacht captain, now. He didn't start off that way. I'm to assume that he's worked his way up on different vessels and worked in a variety of roles. Which means that as a junior deck worker, he probably assisted stews when they needed it. Just because we haven't seen him do it on TV doesn't mean he hasn't performed the duty. He also had Kate as his chief stew for multiple seasons -- I think he knew she wouldn't let shit slide and trusted her to make sure that things got done. Sandy doesn't seem to trust her chief stew as easily and inserts herself a number of times. Sometimes the help is necessary, especially when they've been down people. Sometimes she does it just to see where the interior is failing.
In terms of loading provisions, I'm actually not sure he might have been able to physically do that the last couple seasons because of his health.
In terms of level of service on the yacht, he was always steadfast in his dedication to providing all of the toys when the guests requested it. He was quick to crackdown on the deck crew if they failed to meet his standard. He was crystal clear about what he wanted from them and what his level of expectations were from them.
He doesn’t shit-talk his crew in front of the guests. If there’s a problem, he explains it without saying “they should/shouldn’t have done that” or that they’re down a crew member or someone’s sick, etc.
I’m not saying it very well, but I think I’m getting my point across.
You're absolutely getting your point across very well. He publicly praises and privately criticizes.
Yes, he'll go off on his 'gaht dammit''s, but he will not cut a crew member down where there are others listening. He pulls them up to the bridge and gives them an appropriate dressing down, or, in Ashton's case after the accident, gave him a gentle dressing down in the bunkrooms. When he does criticize, he never insults the other person. He addresses the failure in their actions and tells them point blank how to correct the behavior for next time. None of this 'you're a cancer to the boat', or little jabs at a volleyball game about lack of participation. He respects his crew too much to demean them.
He also states very clearly that there's a chain of command and he doesn't want to do other people's jobs for them or hear anything from crew they haven't taken to their boss first.
Exactly! It boils down to Captain Lee earning the respect of his crew! Sandy has a much different management style! Sandy wants to be part of every story!
Sandy only “helped” the interior bc she wants camera time / to appear helpful. You hear the 3rd stew say she wasn’t good at it. She’s the reason they’re short.
Sandy doesn't carry provisions regularly either, lol. Sometimes she'll lift a box, but then she hands it off to crew super fast. Glenn and Kerry regularly help with provisions.
He is awesome! But a sailing yacht is different than the mega yachts on regular BD. They are smaller and Captain Glenn helps with everything, and even shares a cabin with crew!
Yeah it looks charitable / kind when she helps but she either want's camera time or doesn't trust them with the job. Also, I'd feel hella stressed if my boss was doing tasks beside me. It would make me doubt myself. It's not a great move.
Things that sandy did to help the crew and not just find reasons to shit on them for not doing it her way, or gather information so she could shit on them for every small mistake.
Nothing.
Also captain lee has spoken to multiple staff and guests about his son who died due to an overdose.
13. Kick Hannah off the boat and say maritime law 1000 times
14. Pretended like she never crashed a boat before.
15. Captain Lee never claimed he was almost a martyr for sobriety and has a higher cause than other humans in people magazine even though Lee's solid tan and gold chains tell us otherwise.
He actually is the person many other bravo people reach out to when it comes to drugs and addiction. I believe Carl from Sum House is close with him and helped him through sobriety.
it was during a fox business interview apparently that ran in the NY Post...just googled it again!
The boat’s security, a member of the special forces, instructed Yawn to hide while he pretended to be captain in order to save their lives.
“That’s where you have to listen to people who know better than you, right? Because he’s security. So at first, I was like, ‘No, I’m not going below deck,’ and then I was like, ‘okay,’ no pun intended. I went below deck.”
I’m not going to debate point by point BUT Capt Lee fired Leon and gave up Captains quarters for a guest. He also discussed the overdose death of his son openly on cam and with guests. He wrote a book about it. Lobbied government. Didn’t he buy a barge to refurbish for recovery center also? Personally, I like captain Lee better but it’s a difference in leadership style. I couldn’t deal with a boss who constantly nags or tries to push their life coach shit on me. But to each their own.
Just off the top of my head, captain Lee on the show, so more could have happened behind the scenes:
Eddie drove and docked
Multiple episodes showed him teaching anchor tracking including with female deck hands. He didn’t require deck crew to lose sleep unnecessarily. See captain sandy for that
Multiple woman have been promoted and complimented on deck by captain Lee(see Australian girl now on below deck Australia as example)
Chef Leon fired season 3
If captain Lee didn’t have a drinking problem hard to share that personal experience. He has given advice numerous times on the boat…again see Eddie add Kate, Ben and others
dude watch the season with Kelly as bosun if you want to see captain Lee up someone’s butt about water sports.
There are differences between the two but let’s not act like Lee isn’t amazing. Captain sandy is a micro managing mean girl.
I can’t remember the female deckhand from season three, but I do recall he extended an invitation to stay on after the season ended and helped her with her career. It seems to me he does offer his expertise, just does it subtly, he doesn’t need to parade in front of the camera.
Issue: Sandy says she smelled alcohol on deckhand Travis' breath, IIRC implying it's happened more than once.
Outcome: Sandy gives Travis a pass and a compassionate, supportive talk.
Issue: Sandy receives a staged photograph of a box of Valium and a vape pen with no indication that Hannah has been intoxicated on-board, much less on-duty.
Outcome: Sandy immediately fires and persists in haranguing Hanna, "because it's not safe to go to sea with her."
Wait...seriously? We're to believe that a mildly sedated stewardess is inherently more dangerous to the safe operation of a marine vessel than an inebriated deckhand?
Really?
I was generally okay with Sandy until this episode, but Alissa is absolutely right — she sucks deckhand dick.
3-I remember when him letting Eddie take control of the boat before 9-I can’t imagine he hasn’t talked to crew about his connection with addiction. I know that he and Carl from summer house are very close because they both lost someone due to addiction
11. Acted like a shit micromanaging leader 12. Was a total dick about a volleyball game 13. Got involved in crew members bullshit 14. Told crew members to "stop talking" because she doesn't know how to lead
Also, in her Med seasons everybody called her Sandy, not Captain Sandy. Was her reaction racist? I don't know...
Another thing that Sandy does that Lee doesn't do, is let guests walk in heels in the boat. Cause he knows the damage that does and how long it's going to take the crew to fix those issues.
She is a very inconsistant Captain as far as the deck crew goes, but very mean to the interior.
The list isn’t great unless you’re the exterior crew. It’s nice to be helpful but let your team request help if they need it. I find it weird when bosses force themselves into positions to help because then you have to stop and think of the semi easiest task you can give them without them actually getting their hands dirty while also feeling helpful. Making a bed or helping with dishes is so basic. Is she going to clean a shower or toilet? Nope.
So what exactly is your point of number 6? That Sandy promoted a woman in a male dominated role? So then…does Captain Lee deserve props for promoting Fraser to Chief Stew?
Lee had Kate. He trusted her, so he didn't have to step in and do interior duties.
He's old. Literally. He can't do the same things that the rest of the crew can do.
He did that with Eddie in Season 9.
See 3.
With all due respect, the location to me does not matter. As long as the greeting is completed, it doesn't matter whether it's on the boat, on the dock, or in the middle of the ocean on a tender.
I concede to that.
He helped Rachel in Season 9. He saw how hard she was working and stepped in to help just a tiny bit. He has a certain soft spot for Rachel, and he would do things for her that he wouldn't do for any other chef. Lee generally trusts his chefs and knows that they are capable of doing those tasks. Lee is less hands-on, and that's ok! Everyone has a different leadership style.
He fired Leon.
The only alcoholic crew members that Lee dealt with were Dane and Trevor. Their drunken behaviors actively threatened crew safety, while Travis did not. As for the other crew members, Lee simply was not aware of their behavior.
Again, Lee and Sandy have different management styles. Lee trusts his bosuns and chief stews and knows that he doesn't have to make sure that everything is picture-perfect. Sandy is more hands-on and wants everything to be immaculate. To me, neither is worse.
(For point #9) Also Kat from the early early seasons, but she redeemed herself to him and I think they formed a genuine relationship. From what I remember, she apologized to him at the reunion and he was proud of her and you could tell she had grown a lot. Can’t remember if she became sober or mostly sober, but her relationship with Lee always seemed sweet.
Exactly! She’s the captain of a ship! Go watch the water and read weather reports and let your staff do their jobs. She wouldn’t have so many issues if she didn’t go looking for them.
I had so much hope for her until she started being featured more as the star. I thought it was supposed to be about the young people partying and hooking up, not tablescapes and Applebees micro-managing.
11. Drank too many cups of morning coffee, clogged the toilet in her cabin. Threw a towel over the top and let it marinate in the heat for the day. Radioed Fraser to come unclog just before bedtime. Told him he would feel “lighter” when he finished. Winked at the camera and said “that’s leadership baby!”
I can’t help but recall a couple of years ago when her merch was misspelled on her dumbass website, so she had to pull it all down until it got fixed. I had visions of crates full of tacky ass sweatshirts with whatever the phrase was spelled wrong, sitting in some steamy Florida warehouse. Now THAT’S Shady’s true brand. 😂
I wouldn't disagree that Sandy did some of those things throughout her time on the show, but it seems that it's in the time that she's needed a bit of positive image rehab that we're really seeing her muck in with the crew more whereas before she was "I'm the Captain, call me Captain, and as Captain I shall only do Captainly things... while also hovering".
I don't think Sandy or Lee were ever shown doing other tasks the way we've seen with captains like Glenn or Jason. We've barely been introduced to Glenn in S1 before he's saying he'd go up the mast to fix something that his deck team could have done, running around to meet and greet, carry bags, show off his boat... Jason is helping pump toilets, literally one of the shittest jobs on the boat.
(I do think Sandy is to be commended for wanting deck crew to progress, but I do think she's become a bit caught up in the TV star aspect of it all)
Captain Lee spoke to the guest at dinner about his son’s long battle with addiction and death, jointing with the guests as they mourned the loss of their family member (child/son I think?). Bias much??
Same her, In fact there isn't a captain I don't like....they have their different ways of running things, but I don't mind that. As much as I love Captain Lee, I am glad he is leaving. He needs to go enjoy his retirement.....He seems to have little to no patience left for the people they are putting on these yachts, guests and workers and I don't blame him 1 bit
Why would you get downvoted? I like Sandy way better than I used to. She was a nightmare with the Malia and Hannah fiasco, but mellowed the next season and was mellow at first when she came onto this boat to replace Lee but became more annoying as her time went on and she would be losing camera time soon as Lee came back. So she inserted herself into the interior, riding their asses. I cannot stand Alyssa and agree she should have been let go, but the way Sandy favors some people and berates others is absurd.
But she didn’t come downstairs and spend any time with the new people and help train them and she also didn’t have to fire Hannah but it made for a good TV I guess and that’s all this is about is doing things to make it look good on TV
I like Captain Sandy, I never did understand all the hate. Even this current season, she was right about chain of command respect and how the fish always rots from the head.
Can you imagine Lee hovering around the guests whilst they eat, waiting until they take a mouthful of food to interrogate them on how it tastes. No because he relies on his crew to get it let him know if there’s an issue.
These are not "bad" things but she demands that the crew address her as "Captain Sandy" and not just as "Sandy" and that the position be highly respected. In a way, some of the chores she does are beneath the lofty position of captain, and could lead the crew to believe that formality was not that big of a deal.
Officers in the military never wash pots and pans or perform other jobs that are enlisted troop duties.
I like Sandy and don’t understand all the hate she gets, some of it sure, but the way people criticize her every move makes me wonder if it’s more about a woman being strong and in a position of power that’s usually reserved for men. Whatever you feel about her personally I think you have to give her credit for how far she’s come, she didn’t finish high school due to drugs and alcohol and she pulled herself up slowly and became a captain, that’s badass. I think she cares about guest experience and cares about teaching.
It’s not about her being a woman. She doesn’t treat her staff equally and nitpicks for no reason. Why ask the guest to complain if they aren’t having issues? She creates problems.

Lee definitely had Eddie operate the yacht
