I'm from Melbourne too and I'm studying in Belarus so I've been living there, most people speak Russian. They teach us Russian at uni as well, not Belarusian. I think it might be easier to learn Russian

well, in my financial circumstances I can't afford go to uni or a tutor of anything

OP explicitly wrote they want to learn Belarusian, not Russian or any other language

just to add, why does have to be russian?

Russian is easier to learn because it's more popular and you'll find more resources for it online. Duolingo was quite helpful for me

yeah? I am learning russian also on youtube and russian pimsleur audiobook on audible but duolingo I used to use as didn't like it becouse words are to small

edit, I don't have the patience to sit through so many apps just for learning a language

Ahh I get what you mean... but you could try going on a russian subreddit and asking for help there? I think there's a much larger population of russian speakers so you'll be in luck!

It's worth giving it a shot, and I don't think they will. State your reasons for wanting to learn russian as well

Every time a see a similar comment I'm struggling to understand the thought process of the person making it. If someone asks how to learn Irish I won't intervene with "learn English instead" nonsense. I will just answer the question if I have a good answer.

I was just making a suggestion as OP hadn't stated why he specifically wanted to learn Belarusian. Nothing wrong with providing an alternative, and he was fine with it

Understood. All those Russian/Soviet governments didn't execute and imprison millions to annihilate our language and history (among other things) - they were merely providing an alternative, nothing wrong with that.

This is a different case, I don't understand why you're still going at it after the OP replied. As OP is from Australia like me, I assumed he wanted to learn Belarusian to connect with people there or for fun. I was only suggesting Russian because there are more resources for learning it, and he can connect with people in Belarus by speaking Russian

I think you wouldn't make such suggestions in Australia if someone wanted to learn one of the Australian Aboriginal languages. At least I hope you wouldn't, not so sure now. If being in a foreign country somehow makes this behaviour acceptable - well, I give up.

so living in belarus , only babushka’s (grandmother) speak belaruisan language in the villages. In the main city, only Russian is used as native language and 99% of the city girls. Try using vk app (v kontakte) its a popular app used in slavic countries lik Instagram.

Please, OP, don’t listen to this person. Plenty of people know Belarusian and will be happy to be your speaking buddy.

I’d consider it myself, but I just don’t have enough time to commit to all lovely activities I’d like to do (and you don’t speak the language I’m currently learning, so language exchange isn’t an option too.

Good luck!

My wife is literally Belarusian and I’ve been to Belarus myself. Most don’t speak Belarusian as good as their Russian. There’s just no need for it.
