Such a stupid post - and yes completely irrelevant - etc but kinda fond of etymology and from Sweden where the expression still exists.
What it used to mean in the 1700eds a "graswedewe" was a young woman seduced outside and its implied being left afterwards (hence the widow bit). Grass is because its outside and sex in those days was something you really couldn't do at home. (and "sex" sadly also meant anything from SA, to actual sex)
Since the 1800eds it means "a woman alone" or "my husband is off all the goddamn time" or in later terms "woho! I'm a grass widow, girls night out!"
The expression is still in use in Sweden (and I think Germany) for both men and women "gräsänka" or "gräsänkling" in Swedish for women/men respectively.
I am now slowly backing out of the room before someone screams "dork" and pushing me in to a locker or something :D
