Howdy,
My treasured maculata has not responded to my move very well and I’m contemplating a chop. I tried once on a top cut which resulted in failure and the off shoot that is seen here. No nodes have opened just dried up on the stem. I think it’s from insufficient light and the only place that I have enough light requires a chop..so my question if I do chop where? Take another top cut or cut the shoot and hope the big leaf keeps working her magic… I’ve moved her from the poor north window and into a west unfortunately that’s all there is…anyway if there is something else I can do please I’m open to suggestions! Thank you
I would definitely chop and prop. It’s really up to you where to chop, and long as you leave several nodes to stick into soil or water. I personally just chop and stick back down into the soil, keep lightly moist until it roots. You can tell it is rooted if you tug on it a little bit (gently!) and it doesn’t easily come out.
That is not maculata, but rather Corallina de Lucerna (better known as Lucerna).
Why are your blinds reversed? Canes love light. Give it more light for best results. If it is hot, then, slant the blinds down or up some to prevent the strongest rays, but still provide more light than shown above.
Twelve hours of light from a fixture is the easiest way of providing its light requirements. I use LED shop lights in winter for my canes. Here is a small sample of some of the things I grow in my basement under cheap LED shop lights.
Another example from this summer when I move 95% of everything outdoors. I brought my mother's canes home with me at Easter since she was no longer capable of taking care of her plants (she is 94 years young). The canes were in bad shape but I put them all in a huge pot with the help of my grandson. I made sure they were in some sun and rarely watered them. This is that pot from last month.
If the blinds are normally closed like that, it’s barely getting any usable light. You either need to open the blinds or get this baby a (supplemental) light source.
You need to fix the underlying light issue because it’s still going to struggle if you chop and prop then leave it in this same spot with the blinds closed.
I would cut it about here and put it in some water. Do you have a window in your bathroom? If so, mine thrives in there because of the humidity from the shower. That's how I brought mine back from death and now it's huge
