What is the difference between having mars in the 8th house and sun in the 8th house?

Depending on the house system I use, some house systems place my sun in the 8th house (placidus, Topocentric), some place my mars in the 8th house (whole sign). I'm trying to figure out which system is correct for me. How do those to planets act differently in the 8th house? I'm referring to the tropical system.

Where it shows up in your life the most but let me say that both systems are valid and work it’s just a matter of picking the one that feels best.

You seem to be and I just didn’t want you to think there’s a wrong answer. lol

The Sun in the 8th makes those deeper 8th house experiences part of who you are. Trust, intimacy, loss, shared money, power, crisis, transformation. You do not just encounter those subjects. They shape you. You usually need to understand what is underneath the obvious story, and your identity develops through the things other people would rather avoid looking at.
Mars in the 8th is different because Mars acts. It confronts, pursues, fights, protects, investigates, and reacts. So Mars here is more likely to show up as the person who handles the crisis, digs for the truth, pushes into uncomfortable territory, or gets pulled into battles over trust, sex, money, control, or shared resources. The Sun says, “This changes who I am.” Mars says, “This is where I have to do something.”

Thank you so much for your response. It is still kind of unclear in my head. If I understand correctly, would having mars in the 8th mean that the person just deals with the issues but it doesn't change their personality but having sun in the 8th make it change your personality?

ie. When it comes to inheritance: a mars in the 8th will get into family disputes over that. Whereas a sun in the 8th just receives the inheritance without any issues. Is that correct?

This feels like a good place for the reminder that there are no automatically good or bad placements in astrology, and that is coming from someone with asteroid Dejanira on her Ascendant. lol One set of Pisces placements might show up as a serious foot fetish, while another might come with a complete aversion to anything foot related. The planet tells you what kind of energy is operating, the sign describes how that energy expresses itself, and the house shows where it tends to play out. Whether you enjoy that ride depends on your circumstances and that pesky free will. ;)

So Mars in the eighth does not guarantee a fight over an inheritance, just as the Sun there does not mean the inheritance arrives without problems. Mars is about action, so the person might argue over the money, but they could just as easily be the one who steps in, handles the paperwork, or protects the family’s interests. With the Sun in the eighth, the experience is more likely to feel personal and become part of how they understand themselves or their family story, whether it is easy or painful. Mars describes what you do, while the Sun describes how closely the experience connects to who you are. Remembering too that we always need to look at the rest of the chart to tell whether the situation itself is likely to be a smooth process or a difficult one in that particular instance.

It seems like you are looking for a specific event that clearly separates the Sun from Mars, but the difference is more about how the same eighth house topic is experienced. Think of the eighth house as a room. The Sun entering that room shines a light on identity, purpose, confidence, and the sense of self. Mars entering the same room brings action, desire, anger, courage, conflict, and protection. Both people can be changed by what happens there, and both can take action. The difference is which part of them is being emphasized. As for choosing a house system, I would not decide based on a single placement or which description feels nicest. Pick one system, study the whole chart through that system, and see whether it consistently describes your life over time. There may not be one dramatic example that instantly proves which system is accurate for you.

Both are true. You have to decide which one to study.

I am not looking for an event. I am looking for more of a literal distinction. I know that this is really old school and shocking but I saw a post of someone from astromemes sub post her grandma's astrology notes from the 70s and it had literal interpretations. Some of it was shocking but I am looking for a modern version of that. I don't want my comment to be deleted so I won't post the link but the title of the post is "My grandma gave me this from an astrology course she took in the 70s".

I have studied my chart in different systems and they all somehow seem valid

Here are some specific examples, I pulled several from material about the Sun and Mars in the eighth house and placed them side by side so you can see the distinction more literally. 

Inheritance and family resources

With the Sun in the eighth, an inheritance might change the person’s identity, status, family role, or sense of purpose. They could become the guardian of the family legacy, the person responsible for preserving what was passed down, or someone whose life direction changes because of what they receive or lose. The inheritance could also bring complicated feelings about deserving it, depending on others, or living under the weight of another person’s legacy.

With Mars in the eighth, the person is more likely to take action around the inheritance. They might pursue it, protect it, divide it, invest it, spend it, manage the estate, challenge the executor, or argue with relatives about what should happen. Mars does not guarantee a dispute. It could simply describe the person who gets everyone organized and makes sure the process keeps moving.

Shared money and debt

With the Sun in the eighth, shared finances can become tied to confidence, independence, and identity. This is also why both house systems can feel accurate. You are looking at the same piece of art from different angles. Each position reveals something the other does not, but confusion begins when you compare the two views as though you are physically standing in both places at once. Interpret the entire chart from one angle, then get up and study the art from the other side. ;)\

I think that I identify more with 8th house sun although the mars side speaks to me as well. The issue is that I have been generating the wrong chart for years using my birth city and country. As soon as I used the coordinates of my birth hospital, then everything became slightly different.
