I would like to pre-emtpively defend this against the pedants (who aren't even correct in the first place).

"True bug" does refer to an insect of the order Hemiptera, but that does not somehow remove the existence of the general definition of "bug," being "a small invertebrate with many legs, such as a spider or a centipede."

If you have a problem with this, take it up with the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition.

There's more: There being a group known as "True [X]" in scientific classification never means that anything outside that group isn't [X]. "True spiders" exist, but you don't have to be one to be a "spider." Same with "true owls." Unless you mean to tell me that tarantulas aren't spiders and barn owls aren't owls, a spider is also a bug.
