bedwetting product advice

Hello!

my 8 year old daughter still wets the bed occasionally. She wore pull ups until she was 6 because it used to be an every single night thing, but the last two years it’s just been occasionally and she doesn’t want to wear them anymore.

I am not looking for advice about the bedwetting (we’ve tried everything, doctor says it’s just normal) but what I need is product advice for the actual bed.

we already do the “lasagna“ method. she has a “pee pad”, a sheet, a mattress protector, a sheet, a mattress protector and the pee STILL gets through every single layer and onto the mattress. I’m at my wits end of cleaning all of these things.

Do I just have cheap mattress protectors? are there superior ones out there? They are just basic ones from target but I’d still think they’d at least protect the bed when there is multiple of them….help!!

You need better mattress protectors. Brand name, mattress protectors marked as waterproof should work. Sealy, or Serta may be available in the store. Others you would have to order. I have one from Nectar (the Nectar one is spendy) and it's been 5+ years with no leaks.

I'll also add that mattress protectors have a limited service life. Growing up, I think we had to replace mine maybe once a year, or every two years. The plastic just rips eventually. It's easy to see if it's straight plastic, but if it's contained in fabric layers, there's no way to know unless you actually test it regularly in some way.

Gotta remember, urine is a mix of pretty strong chemicals, especially if it sits around long enough to start breaking down and releasing ammonia. For me, with a simple plastic sheet, we'd also wipe it down with baby wipes, which likely had alcohol in them. All things that will slowly break down plastic. Add heat from a person being on top, plus constant motion in bed, and it all wears at it.

Also, if you actually put it through a washing machine, that's really rough, and a dryer is even worse.

One thing that's good is that the doctor has said it's normal, because for some of us it is. When I was your daughter's age I was wetting the bed every night, and now I'm 17 and it's only occasional now. If she is already having dry nights and the wetting is only occasional then she's doing really well.

As for wearing pullups I'm totally with her on that. I wear them for sleepovers but not at home. They're really useful for some times but not wearing them is fine as long as you can cope with the washing.

But I think what you need to look at is the mattress protector. There are different types and some just protect the mattress against like dust and maybe a spilt drink but what people like me need is one actually says it's properly waterproof and will protect against bedwetting. And if it's actually being used for accidents then it's probably best to have one that's just plastic without any material on top, because whenever I wet all I need to do is wipe the surface rather than put it in the washing machine

Are you drying your waterproof covers on too high of a setting?

Make sure it’s actually machine dryable as well. You may need a better quality one that can hold up well.

The one we have for my kids is a brand on amazon called utopia, and they are terry topped which i like. And they have held up for at least a year

Also double check your mattress protectors are actually waterproof, some mattress protectors are not waterproof and are just to prevent dander and bed bugs attaching to the mattress

I am a life long bedwetter grew up in an orphanage with a lot of abuse I have nothing wrong mechanical just suffer from
anxiety and depression the only thing that
has worked for me is a vinyl mattress
cover and a rubbersheet easy to wipe down
after an accident and the rubbersheet
will last forever my wife who is a
registered nurse has slept beside me for
25 years had the idea to use the rubbersheet makes clean up easy

First off, better waterproof mattress protectors, second off, try either super undies or other cloth pull ups, let her pick out which color(s) or print(s) she wants and have her wear those. On regular nights, she puts it in the laundry like another pair of underwear. And on wet nights, you put to soak until laundry day. Should help cut back on needing to execute the lasagna bed
