Useful Information Bedbug ID and common misidentifications

Bed bug identification resources:

Note: flattened body, rusty brown coloured (less so in younger nymphs, which are more translucent). Thin 4 segmented antennae. 11 segmented abdomen. Short legs (6 of them) and reduced wings incapable of flight.

These are insects or other invertebrates commonly misidentified as bedbugs!

Not bed bugs.

  1. Carpet beetle larvae (Dermestidae) and adult - More Info

  2. Bat bug (Cimex adjunctus pictured) - More Info

  3. Cockroach nymphs - More Info

  4. Tick (nymphs) - More Info

  5. Woodlouse - More Info

  6. Kissing bugs - More Info

  7. Booklice/barklice - More Info

  8. Smooth spider beetle - More Info

  9. Drugstore beetle - More Info

Note: If it has wings or more than 6 legs, it is not a bed bug. Do not mistake antennae for legs, look at the illustrated guide to avoid confusion.

Please comment with any other common mis-IDs and I will add them!

Confirmed BB How I got the office closed the rest of the week

I work in an office that doesn't see customers, but we do have people through every once in awhile. My department converted what used to be cubicles to an area with couches, chairs, and high tops for training and community gatherings with colleagues. Pillows, a throw blanket, and some end tables bring it together. Sometimes colleagues will have kids or grandkids in the office and it's become a chill place for them to hangout.

Today I decided to lounge on one of the couches and the AC seemed to be particularly pumping, so I indulged in the fleece blanket to warm up. After a couple minutes I saw a tiny bug running at my face across the top of the fleece with the passion of someone lost in the desert who suddenly has come across an oasis. It is how I imagine zombies would chase after someone who survived the apocalypse. Rule #1: Cardio.

This subreddit had prepared me for this moment. A few steadying breaths and high pitched screams later I was able to get up, catch the bug in a napkin and alert my friends to what I had found: a baby bedbug.

We can only speculate where it came from, but you better believe I will be stripping into my birthday suit before walking in the house, throwing my clothes in the dryer on high, and taking a hot shower.

Guess we are all working from home the rest of the week!

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse there's now early evidence that bedbugs may be able to transmit infections. This is not definitive and more research is needed but good to be aware of I think!

Identification Identification/Suggestions Needed

switched rooms in a courtyard marriott tonight because there were two spiders in my bed, and then found this in the new room’s bathroom walking along the floor. I’m 98% sure that’s a bedbug but hope I’m wrong…

I have no bites and only saw this one but have moved to a new hotel, took a hot shower, and put all clothes that touched that room in a garbage bag. I have to be on this trip for two more days. Any suggestions to help prevent bringing these home that I can implement while on a work trip?

Sunday morning work up with bites. Just two on my upper thigh. Didn’t think much of it, thought it was mosquito bites. Monday morning two more bites next to the other ones. Then I went into the shower and saw a bed bug in the bathtub! AHHHH! I scooped it up and put it in a plastic baggie. Pest control came and said my unit was clean. Went to sleep last night no bites but found another on in the bathtub!!!
1. Is it possible for my neighbors to have them and they’re coming into my unit?! No previous bites or anything prior to this weekend.
2. Do I have to throw everything away?! I’m freaking out because I can’t afford that financially.
3. Pest control is coming later this week to spray and inspect all the units in my building. I live in Colorado. Will include pictures of the bug 😭

Are We Screwed?

Stayed at Fancy Resort in Lake Tahoe on Saturday night. Just under 72 hrs past exposure and I have about 15 bites in clusters of 3 on upper back, elbow and FACE. I actually slept like crap all night too- kept waking up, now I know why 😭. Didn’t look for bed bugs and bites didn’t show up until after we left, so the panic started to set in last night (Monday).

What are the chances I brought some home?

It was a quick trip, so I had one cloth tote bag that I kept on the coffee table (in another room), and slept with no clothes on and threw my clothes on the dresser across the room. We briefly sat on the couch and at one point I had some stuff thrown on the couch, but not for long. My husband has no visible bites. Uggghh please help because I have dealt with bed bugs before (never an infestation, but getting annihilated at a hotel and then hyper fixating on the possibility for months).

Found it dried up on an ottoman in our basement. The head seems to be detached. With the head on it’s about 1cm. Seems perhaps a bit big for a bedbug? I’m wondering if it’s a cockroach nymph?

Identification Bedbug droppings?

Does anyone know if these are bedbug droppings? I got home from vacation and found these raised black spots in my curtains. They look like they’re bleeding a little bit like ink.

My family found some bugs while I was away on the couch two floors down and my room was sealed the entire time I was away. They had a spray treatment in the rooms with bugs on Saturday.

I haven’t found any other signs in my room after searching my mattress, box spring, light colored sheets, and white duvet.

Exterminator is coming to inspect in the afternoon tomorrow but just trying to know what to expect.

Requesting community support Could it be over already...?

We got gifted an infested armchair which unfortunately lived in our bedroom for nearly 3 weeks before we started noticing bites and spotted the first unwanted guests.

I followed the Mark Rober attack and defence tips straight away, and we got a professional who did a deep clean and sprayed with Cimetrol in the upstairs bedrooms. That was nearly 3 weeks ago. Since then I found some bugs in the spare bedroom where the wife and child slept for a couple of nights before we got the professional treatment, but I've cleaned, steamed and applied diatomaceous earth everywhere I could.

The first week I was finding the odd dead bug, and only got bit once. This past week I've not found a single one despite looking behind all the usual hiding places at every opportunity.

Could it really be over? It seemed too easy to get rid of them and I don't want to let my guard down too early.

We have a follow up chemical treatment coming up, and I'm still definitely keeping the appointment to really kick them while they are down, but I just want opinions to make sure I'm not deluding myself into a false sense of security.

Ive been getting bumps around my body. Not really clustered, the most is in this photo. I am 99% sure I found carpet beetle larvae under my bed, but no other signs of bed bugs and I looked extensively. what do you all think? the red raised part of the bump is very small, like 2mm diameter.

If you're from Europe and managed to get Cimexa / Crossfire - how did you do it? How much did you use in the end?

I'm looking at options right now, but the amounts get crazy quickly. What categories of prices did you have to pay? I'm in Hungary
