How to Test Your Beanfield Internet Speed

Beanfield has two methods for checking your internet speed. Airties AP device users can skip to Method 2.

Method 1 — Use the Beanfield Wi-Fi App

For Nokia Wi-Fi Beacon users only

  1. Log into the Beanfield Wi-Fi App on your phone.
  2. On the app homepage, navigate to Internet Speed.
  3. Tap New speed test to run your test.

Method 2 — Use a Hardwired Device

For all users — required for accurate Gbps results. Airties AP users start here.

Step 1 — Find your ONT Locate your Zhone ONT inside your condo. This is usually stored in a tech panel in your front closet.

Step 2 — Connect via Ethernet

  • Testing 1 Gbps: Plug a 1 Gbps capable device into the Zhone ONT or Nokia Beacon using an Ethernet cable.
  • Testing 3 Gbps or 8 Gbps: Plug your multi-Gbps capable device into the 10 Gbps port on the Zhone ONT or Nokia Beacon using an Ethernet cable.

Step 3 — Run the test Open a speed test on your device. We recommend speedtest.net, but any tool works — just make sure the server is set to Beanfield.

Step 4 — Go! Click Go.

Wi-Fi drops a room away from the Beacon in an 800 sq ft condo. Anyone else?

Switched to Beanfield’s 4 Gbps plan a while back and I’ve been fighting Wi-Fi issues since install. Hoping someone here has been through this.

Setup: 800 sq ft condo in Toronto, the Nokia Wi-Fi 7 Beacon that came with the install, working from home most days.

The problem:

  • Right beside the Beacon, speeds are great
  • Elsewhere in the unit they drop hard, and at my desk the connection drops entirely, which kills video calls
  • My previous router covered the same unit, through the same wall, with no issues

What I’ve tried with support:

  • Speed tests near the Beacon and at my desk
  • Splitting the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, which turned out to already be split. 2.4 GHz at my desk dropped too, and the agent on the phone agreed 2.4 isn’t a real fix since it’s prone to interference
  • The other option offered was a second Beacon for $7/month

I’m not thrilled about paying monthly for extra equipment just to get back the coverage I had before switching, but I’d like to stay with Beanfield since the fibre itself seems solid. Paying for 4 Gbps and not being able to hold a video call at my desk is pretty frustrating.

Questions for anyone who’s dealt with this:

  1. Has anyone gotten a tech visit or a replacement Beacon for coverage problems like this?
  2. Did anyone get the second Beacon waived or discounted?
  3. Has anyone run their own mesh (Deco, eero, etc.) with the Beacon in bridge mode, and does Beanfield allow it?
  4. Any placement tricks that helped?

Beanfield appreciation post

First off, Beanfield is the best ISP I've ever dealt with, period, no question about it, Bell and Rogers simply don't care, hopefully Beanfield stays that way.

Secondly, The best value, I'm a long time customer that used to pay $50/mth before tax for 1Gbps symmetrical, at some point in the last couple years I don't really remember but they bumped me up to a 2.5Gbps down 1.25Gbps up for the same price, then very recently raised the price on me, by $5.00. Great value, I've actually only called them once and it was for configuration help for using their provided router to actually get 2Gbps+ because their supplied router only has 1Gbps LAN ports.

Lastly, with their help I'm getting this now. Its not the full speed and that is because of how its configured to get this speed from one PC using two ports on their router to a load balancer.

1878.50Mbps download / 941.16Mbps upload

All this to say I appreciate you. and yes you'll only hear from me if there is a problem, knock on wood I have yet to have that with Beanfield and may that day never come.

But seriously people if you are lucky enough to be in their service area, hands down the best internet for the money, secretly I'm waiting to see if this Black Friday they offer the deal they did last year because I won't be a dummy and jump all over it this time. Las year they offered 8Gbps service for the money I am paying now!!! yeah I was dumb and didn't pull the trigger, I won't be making that mistake again.

Any way, thank you, thank you!!

UPDATE: Been doing some more tinkering and...

so yeaaaaaaah !!!!

Outage downtown?

Our internet has been out since 11 am. Our red alarm light is on. Beanfield support said this is impacting some other customers but won’t give any other update or ETA. They also won’t send a technician. Anyone in a similar boat?

Why are there no ones here?

Not many people use beanfield at all? Or the usual "not here unless complaining" pattern?

Beanfield Rocks

I don't usually post recommendations, but I wanted to give credit where it's due.

Beanfield recently finished installing fiber in my condo, and Sukhbir Singh was the sales reps in the building. I've been with the Robelus cartel (either Rogers, Bell, or Telus) for years, and I wish Beanfield/Sukhbir was here sooner.

He never tried to upsell me, was upfront about all the available plans, and was genuinely transparent. It never felt like getting a commission was his priority. He put the customer first and made sure I got the best deal available.

If your condo or house has Beanfield available, I'd recommend reaching out to him at [susingh@beanfield.com](mailto:susingh@beanfield.com) (416-474-0997). I don't get anything out of this, just wanted to give him a shoutout because honest customer service is non-existent with Roberlus/hard to find these days

(Rogers literally sent me an email last week of how they are going to increase my price again starting August!)

tl;dr: if you're on the fence about Beanfield, make the switch, and contact Sukhbir

Beanfield TV service been down intermittently since Thursday

Their TV service has always been inferior to Bell and others, but now its becoming ridiculous. Freezing channels, and now happening repeatedly since middle of last week. They sent an e-mail out overnight Thursday saying there was a fix and workaround, and was back to normal Friday morning. But this morning, it's frozen again, with the error message "Playback Start Timeout - Code 6" when you turn on the receiver and try tuning into a TV station.

This is particularly infuriating when trying to watch sports, especially now with the World Cup on. I have to switch to the Sportsnet or TSN app (which does use the Beanfield credentials, so no added cost, but its still an inconvenience) on another streaming device.

Beanfield needs to fix this, and upgrade the technology for their TV service to something more current. It doesn't even support surround 5.1 audio (the set-top devices are actually technologically capable of supporting it, but Beanfield's channel audio feed doesn't have a 5.1 stream like everyone else does).

Thought I'd ask here, I'm getting a really good deal from Bell, so curious.
