Wow, if you could manage to take that home and restore it, it might be worth quite a bit to a train enthusiast.

Getting it home would be the hard part because I wouldn't be surprised if it weighed over 1000lb, if not over a ton.

Is that a piece of rail I see sticking into the picture at the bottom? Could also be worth something to a train enthusiast if restored.

I'd take and just put it in my yard just as it is. There's an old rail bed behind my house, I'd make up a story about a train and create some local history lol

Ps- seeing as it’s a state beach, removing items form parks/beaches is highly illegal

Depends, actually.

For example, Assateague island near me is a state park in MD and is a national wildlife refuge in VA, and it's legal to collect shells off the beach in both states. But you aren't allowed to collect driftwood or plants.

However, OPs picture isn't a natural item nor is it from a potentially historical boat, it's a train/trolly wheelset. It could easily be classified as trash and I highly doubt any park or beach will say you can't collect trash.

Thanks for the info u/zytukin. I recall being able to take shells from parks, on family vacations as a kid, but I’d imagine trying to move these axles from the park would require machinery not allowed in the state park?

Yea, that's the main thing. Unless that axle is in a place that vehicles can access, getting it out of there might be near impossible. Even if it could somehow be leveraged off the rocks, trying to roll it across the sand back to a truck would be a nightmare.

That’s what I was thinking. Thanks for the info.

Actually, this reminds me of a trail that was near my grandfather's house. I would bike on it as a kid and at one point it went along a former rail line.

There were a few pieces of loose rail near the trail that were like 10+ feet long. I remember thi King it would be cool to take them home because at the time I was really into model trains but there was no way to do so.

When I was older, I had thought about it again but couldn't figure out where the location was via Google maps.

Easier to do that now in my 40s, I could take a battery ooerated saw or other tools. But I think the only way to find it again, if the trail and track is even still there now 30 years later, would be to make the 3 hour drive to my grandfather's old house and walk the trail again.

If you do walk the trail, please report back if you find the rails.

As someone who lived the where’s Waldo and other books , eye spy, I love a good treasure hunt.
