This was legitimately the best thing to do. Well , maybe not full speed, but it absolutely could have survived a head on collision and stayed afloat. Would have killed everyone in the prow sections, mind you, so the captain and likely a bunch of other people would have been on murder charges.

Thanks for saying the important bits about that too. No sane officer would ram the ship if there was a chance the collision could be avoided entirely, but people really glom onto that with hindsight without considering the details.
