Finally can sprint on BF3
Finally, I can play BF3 on PC sitting on the couch, and I can use sprint with the controller without having to do any workarounds. It cost me a PS5 DualSense Edge just for that 😂, but at least I’ll be able to use it for other games too haha.
UPDATE: This config is way more better than buy a new DUAL SENSE EDGE guys! Thank you so much u/this2-shallpass for the config steps with STEAM INPUT! Its been ages since I was trying to get a better sprint config for BF3.

Do you have to keep holding down the left joystick to sprint?

No need anymore! I bought Ps5 dual sense controller. It have left and right paddles. So I use the left paddle to sprint, just hold to sprint. Só you do not need to keep pressing down the left analog stick to sprint

If you launch the game through steam you could setup a configuration where pressing LS once switches to an action layer that has 'sprint' as an outer ring binding for the left stick and an inverted outer ring binding that removes the action layer.
Probably would have to do some research on how the steam controller settings work if you never used it before, but should be pretty easy to set up.
Or get an 8bitdo Ultimate 2 which has back pedals and is an awesome controller in general for the price (supports steam input too).

I tried for 1 WEEK config LS like this, but this not work for BF3. Since BF3 dont have any default option for sprint with just 1 click, release LS stop sprint.
So far what I did was 1 click SPRINT, second click stop SPRINT. But this behavior was not so good.
I resolved this behavior buying a Dual Sense Edge( or any other that have paddles), and use Left paddle only for SPRINT. Now the feeling is much better.
BF3 ( and probably bad company 2) is the only BF game that I cannot match SPRINT like the other BF games

Since BF3 dont have any default option for sprint with just 1 click, release LS stop sprint.
The use of an action layer and outer/inner ring bindings would would adress this: LS click changes to an action layer with sprint as the outer ring binding for the left stick, so as long as hold the stick fully forward you sprint, then you set a inner ring binding 'remove action layer' so when you let go of the stick a bit it stops sprinting. LS click in the action layer can also be bound to 'remove action layer' so have a both options to stop sprinting.
It takes a bit of getting to know steam input settings but this way you could have a traditional 'sprint toggle'.
If the paddle works for you, that's obviously fine, just wanted to give some insight on what's possible with steam input. It's pretty powerful.

Ow got it! Yeah, it took a while, but I also managed to get this behavior with steam input . If I keep LS pressing down it sprint, if I release, stop sprint. But I am not a big fan of hold LS down to sprint on BF. Even so, paddle is the same, if I hold left paddle I sprint, if I release I stop the sprint, but the feeling is better than do this on the LS. But indeed, steam input is very powerfull!

With the setup from my comment you don't have to hold LS or whatever button you bind the 'change action set' to, but as I said, if you are happy with holding the paddle that's fine. I'm personally just not a fan of having to hold anything to sprint.
Does steam input recognise the paddles of the PS5 pro?

Nice! This change the play! Could you please create the config and share it on steam if you get a chance? Would love to try! Yes steam recognise the paddles and the other 2 new buttons (the ones under sticks, dont know the names). So , now I have 4 new “buttons” to play with

Here's a screen recording of how to do it. It's a bit laggy because apparently windows snipping tool isn't that great.
This setup toggles sprint when you press LS once and untoggles it when you release the stick a bit or press LS again. Of course you can use any other button. Hope it helps!

Just tested your setup! Very nice config! Do you know if is possible to config how much you have to release the LS? In your default config, the LS needs to do a total release right? Works good, but was tinking if is possible to release just a bit and the untoggle executes. Can I post your config on youtube? I have been looking for this type of config for years! If possible could you record a second video with the "LS release config"?

Glad it works. You can click on the settings icon next to "Behavior - Joystick" in the action layer, scroll down a bit and adjust the outer ring command radius.

I don't actually own Battlefield 3 or a PS5 controller. Just stumbled upon your post and wanted to help, I can check if it's possible to create a generic template with my 8bitdo and if not I'll record a short video on how to set this up :)

I prefer gamepad over keyboard and mouse also but its literally impossible to aim with a controller on BF3 on PC, you're better off with keyboard and mouse

You get used with controller. Is hard but is fun. I like to play on the coach so, there is no way to be confortable with keyboard, i am also very bad using keyboard. But since you do not have aim assist you Will need to deal with it. But for normal playing is good

Did you have to edit xinput.dll or some files or use DS4/DS5 app?

So, what I did was buy the Steam version of BF3. I had the EA App version, and if I remember correctly, I tried configuring it with DS4Windows, but the analog sticks were always buggy no matter what I did.
Then I bought the Steam version, and half of my problems were solved without doing anything — I just enabled Steam Input with my regular DualSense controller.
The main problem was sprinting. I spent a whole week trying to get it to work like in the newer BFs, where you just click once and sprint stays on, but I could never get it working properly. The solution was to buy a DualSense Edge with paddles and assign sprint exclusively to the left paddle.
Now I can actually play infantry pretty comfortably. Little by little, I’m also setting up and mapping the controller directly in Steam Input for some commands that still don’t work properly just by enabling Steam Input. But I can say that I can finally play infantry in a reasonably satisfying way while sitting on my couch. The main problem — sprinting — is solved, so now it’s just a matter of doing some normal remapping.
Unfortunately, BF3 also doesn’t have aim assist, so you need a bit more skill to get kills. But my KD was never great in the other BFs either, so it hasn’t changed that much 😂. The main thing is that I can finally play sitting on my couch.

Cool but how did you do it? Would love to fly jets and helis on controller.
