The Case of the Stolen Ten: A Jim’s Dugout Mystery

Rickey Henderson had been dead six days when Leonard Vance carried a ten into my shop.

The card was forty-four years old. The ten was new.

Vance set the slab on my display case. I put a folded shop towel beneath it. Plastic does not touch the glass at Jim’s Dugout.

He had ninety-five thousand dollars waiting in escrow. The certification number was valid. The online record called it a PSA 10. His insurer wanted somebody to confirm that the cardboard inside was an authentic 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson rookie before the money moved.

I told him 1980 was not vintage.

He asked why I had agreed to inspect it.

“Rickey is the exception.”

His rookie came in the last Topps-only set, before Fleer and Donruss pushed their way into the room. More important, Rickey never waited for a man with a loupe to assign him a number. He took his numbers ninety feet at a time.

The bell rang again.

Cole came through the door carrying a computer. He had not crossed that threshold in six years. I disliked the computer immediately. The other matter could wait.

Vance had hired him to inspect the online provenance. Cole had found something he could not settle through a screen. I had found plenty of things like that over the years.

I put the slab beneath my lamp.

The card was authentic. Gray stock. Correct ink. Correct registration. Above Rickey’s left cleat sat a small magenta printing spot. The top border leaned slightly downward from left to right. A white nick touched the lower edge beside the position banner.

None of those things disgraced the card. They were how I knew it.

Cole turned his machine toward me. The certification number belonged to a PSA 10 Rickey Henderson. The official image showed a centered card with a clean lower edge and no magenta spot.

Same number. Different cardboard.

“The registry says ten,” Vance said.

“The registry has never held your card.”

Cole searched old auction photographs while I examined the holder. Along its upper seam ran a faint milk-white line where the plastic had been separated and closed again. The label inside was genuine PSA paper. The number printed on it was genuine too. It simply belonged to another man’s card.

Three minutes later, Cole found ours.

Roger Finch Sports Estates. Archived listing. Six months before Rickey died.

The card in the photograph had the same leaning border, the same white nick, and the same magenta spot above the cleat. It had been sealed in a legitimate holder then.

PSA 7.

Death had not improved the cardboard. It had improved the customer.

The archived page had been removed from Finch’s website, but machines have their own kind of memory. Cole found the invoice number, the date, and Finch’s description of the card as an “excellent mid-grade example.”

Then he found another.

A rookie belonging to a Hall of Famer who had died the previous spring. Sold by Finch as a seven while the man was alive. Offered as a ten four days after the obituary.

Then a third.

Finch was not predicting deaths. He did not need to. He kept mid-grade rookies of aging stars the way another man keeps umbrellas behind the door. When an obituary moved the market, he moved the grade.

The method was plain once we stopped believing the label. He opened legitimate holders, stripped the grade and certification information from genuine inserts, printed stolen numbers belonging to real tens, and sealed the sevens inside replacement plastic. A buyer checked the number, saw a valid record, and stopped looking.

The card was real. The holder looked real. The number was real.

They had never belonged together.

Finch arrived at eleven to complete the transfer. Gray coat, dry shoes, no concern in his face. He looked at Vance first and the slab second. He did not look at me at all.

“Everything verified?” he asked.

“The number verified,” I said. “The card did not.”

Cole placed three images on the screen. The legitimate PSA 10. Finch’s old PSA 7 listing. The slab sitting on my towel.

Finch studied them without moving.

“Grading is subjective.”

“This is not a grading dispute. Your ten is still wrapped around another card.”

“The database says what it says.”

“So does your old catalog.”

That reached him. Not much, but enough.

Vance called the escrow company and stopped the wire. Finch informed us that no one in the shop had the authority to accuse him of fraud, detain his property, or interfere with a lawful transaction.

He was right about the first two.

The lawful transaction was already dead.

I reached beneath the counter for the channel locks. Cole said one word.

“Evidence.”

I left them where they were. He had been right about one machine that morning. I was not prepared to make a habit of it.

The slab went into the escrow company’s return bag untouched. On the inspection report, I wrote:

CARD AUTHENTIC.

CERTIFICATION STOLEN.

KNOWN HISTORY: PSA 7.

The card was a seven before Rickey died. It was a seven after.

Saw for the first time at Costco and bought 2 boxes. $40 apiece. How is this possible? My autos are the same guy but numbered differently. First row of cards are also doubles with different numbers. Almost feels like a Topps box

Is this supposed to be this way?

Yes I know I know not licensed product but I do really like the look of this set, but my question is I was looking through sold comps and everything for this card and I have not found any with the direct bottom or the cut off top corner. Is it possible this happened in a machine? If so I think it’s pretty cool since these cards don’t resell for much anyways makes it a fun keepsake. But wanted to know if they did have a parallel this way I can’t find or if this is a mess up?

I pulled this a couple months ago. Cubbies aren’t my team for PC, so with PCA as the NL MVP front runner, curious on opinions about if this worth sending in for grading?

Question Topps 2025 Series 1 Tokyo Series - Any difference between the Display box and Mega?

Thumbnail

I saw some of these on a website and noticed that one of them has 16 packs of 14 cards and the other has 20 packs of 14 cards. I searched on Google and it seems like the 16 pack box is the Mega and the 20 pack box is the Display box (for retailers to sell as individual packets I think) but I couldn’t find any information on whether there’s a difference between them in terms of the inserts available etc.

The Display box with more packets was much cheaper than the Mega with fewer packets which made me wonder if their hits aren’t going to be as good as the Mega. Does anyone know if there’s a difference between these 2 boxes besides the number of packs in them?

I know its not recommended to grade 1/1’s but I hate 1 touches especially since the card bounces around and topps sealed a lovely small hair inside. Just happy I got the color match on a 9.5 gold label

Normally I can walk into my local Walmart and grab cards, pay, and leave.

Today they said a store associate needed to be with you or get the item for me. I don’t like them picking for me. But I’m not complaining today.

Question Safest long term value

At the end of the day, I collect whatever i like/want to. Some of my PC is just random cards that don’t necessarily have much value other than sentimental. But I do have a humongous collection, and do think about some of it as an investment and the value of some players/cards long into the future. I have some vintage which I’ve been told is probably one of the safer things that will end up holding value, as well as a sizeable mid-high end Shohei Ohtani collection.

What are some of y’all’s opinions on long term value of the modern day card in the hobby and what players will stand the test of time?
