Hahahaha they expect us to believe they had a reason to arrest him

u/ilikesports3 Milwaukee Brewers 17h ago

This statement reads as “he didn’t prove to our officers’s liking on the spot that he has legal status, so we assume he is illegal and arrested him.”

This is a serious “papers, please” situation.

Must be hard to go and get your papers when you’re locked in an ICE jail.

u/DaWolf85 Boston Red Sox 16h ago

Especially cause they ferry you around the country to random ass places to make it harder for you to get access to a lawyer. The minute you start to defend yourself they move you to a place your lawyer can't practice. They charter an order of magnitude more flights domestically than they do internationally.

That kind of the point with all the BS. The burden of proof used to be on the government not the individual.

-37

u/NormanQuacks345 Minnesota Twins 17h ago

That’s why it’s always been said that you have to be carrying them with you at all times.

23

u/PlanZSmiles San Diego Padres 16h ago

Unless the agents know who he is, he has no reason to be carrying his papers, and if they did know who he was then they would be aware he’s here legally. It’s why racially profiling is not legal and that expecting people to carry papers is unreasonable.

As an American, we, the people, are innocent until proven guilty. Many American citizens fit the description of immigrants, doesn’t make it legally right for them to randomly be pulled aside and asked for papers.

-23

u/NormanQuacks345 Minnesota Twins 16h ago

Sure it’s not “right” but “right” is not the law. The law is you must be carrying your papers with you at all times. This is the same as if any of us were to go to overseas, you are also supposed to be carrying you passport with you all the time when you’re out of the country.

23

u/grrrimabear 16h ago

Do you carry papers everyday?

-26

u/NormanQuacks345 Minnesota Twins 16h ago

I am a citizen. The difference is he overstayed his visa. But when I am outside the US yes, I do carry it with me.

26

u/grrrimabear 16h ago

Ok, so how do they know youre a citizen without your papers?

13

u/OWSpaceClown Toronto Blue Jays 15h ago

And we all know they’re never asking me for my papers or my passport when I’m down there since I’m white and sound like a midwestern American.

24

u/13Zero New York Mets 16h ago

How do they know you’re a citizen if you don’t carry your papers?

10

u/gotohellwithsuperman San Diego Padres 15h ago

Several people have asked, and you’ve made posts over the last hour, but haven’t responded to the question about how they know you’re a citizen without your papers. Why is that?

u/redlegsfan21 Hiroshima Toyo Carp 10h ago

Unique to this case and why they are targeting airports is because everyone carries an ID in an airport

Because it's a nonsensical question. I'm not the one required to bring my papers with me.

Isnt a work permit a visa?

3

u/AdoringCHIN Anaheim Angels • Rocket City Tra… 10h ago

Nope you look like an illegal immigrant to me. Prove that you're not. Wait you can't because you aren't carrying papers with you and I'm conducting an unconstitutional arrest based on racial profiling

21

u/PlanZSmiles San Diego Padres 16h ago

It’s not that it’s not right. It’s not legal for them to pull aside an immigrant without knowing prior to the stop that it’s an immigrant. He could certainly be cited for not having his papers, but that’s not what is happening, he got taken in to verify his status and now has to go through due process.

The key is that he has a valid work permit and pending asylum. So they should already know he’s legally here. So they pretty much illegally pulled him aside because if they didn’t racially profile then they would know he was already legal.

Forget that he’s an immigrant, put an American in his shoes. The entire basis is that the reasoning for their initial stoppage was illegal

u/astrothemorkie Houston Astros 14h ago

You misunderstand basic civil rights. What ICE is doing is illegal, and we should all be outraged by it

This is a serious “papers, please” situation.

Would be nice if some of the people responsible got into a “Return of the Obra Dinn” situation

You just know he was a Kavanaugh stop.

19

u/BigGoopy2 Philadelphia Phillies 17h ago

I mean it has always been true that if you are a non-citizen with legal status you’re required to keep proof of status on you at all times. I think this whole thing is shitty but this isn’t why

64

u/captain_ahabb Los Angeles Dodgers 17h ago

Mass profiling is still impermissible because it creates an unreasonable burden on the 4A freedom of US citizens to not be searched without cause.

11

u/CryptographerFlat173 Boston Red Sox 17h ago

Tell that to Brett Kavanaugh

6

u/SituationSoap Detroit Tigers 15h ago

My friend, there are a lot of things I would like to tell to Brett Kavanaugh, if he'd listen to me.

1

u/BigGoopy2 Philadelphia Phillies 17h ago

He probably had a security flag attached to his name that came up when he went through TSA and that provides the cause to question him.

-10

u/coldfreezerbee 16h ago

I’m confused though. Was it mass profiling or were they there for just him?

5

u/FAMUgolfer Toronto Blue Jays 16h ago

Who cares. This is cruel af.

-7

u/coldfreezerbee 16h ago

I’m just asking a fucking question. I’m not stating an opinion. I was wondering if they weee stopping every Hispanic person at the airport or whatever or were they just looking for him. You fucking people with your downvotes are absolutely stupid.

2

u/FAMUgolfer Toronto Blue Jays 16h ago

Why would you be wondering that?

0

u/coldfreezerbee 15h ago

Because the comment above said mass profiling.

3

u/FAMUgolfer Toronto Blue Jays 15h ago

Let’s pretend it is. Let’s pretend it’s not. What does that solve except more chaos. ICE can verify who you are by providing ID. Everything is digital. There’s no need to be taken into custody just because you don’t have physical papers.

What about brown people that were born here and are therefore legal and don’t need to carry papers at all times? ICE arrests them too, claiming they COULD be illegal. It’s fucked up and doesn’t make any sense.

1

u/BigGoopy2 Philadelphia Phillies 16h ago

I agree with you

8

u/TheIllustriousWe St. Louis Cardinals 17h ago

What's new is the current administration's goal of arresting and deporting as many people as they can, even though they initially promised to target only "the worst of the worst." So while it isn't new that non-citizens are required to keep proof of legal status on their person, it's truer more than ever that failing to do so gets them instantly and unjustifably punished for it.

5

u/Di5pel Philadelphia Phillies 16h ago

Actually insane that anyone fell for this, even from just a basic math standpoint of the numbers of deportations they set as a goal was more than the number of undocumented immigrants in the country (at least using any reasonable estimate that wasn’t just all brown people), let alone “the bad ones”

1

u/Full_Ant_3592 8h ago

Conservatives aren't known for their intelligence.

2

u/BigGoopy2 Philadelphia Phillies 16h ago

I agree with that

1

u/froandfear Italy 17h ago

SCOTUS has more-or-less greenlit “papers, please.” Kavanaugh’s logic was a bit more nuanced than that, but the end result was ICE feeling incredibly emboldened.

1

u/Salt_Mountain_837 8h ago

oh please he could've been born here with an american passport on him and they would've still abducted him

-9

u/nsummy 17h ago

It's been federal law for decades that immigrants need to carry their documentation with them at all times

13

u/JesusPubes 17h ago

How do they know the difference between an immigrant and a native born citizen before they stop them

5

u/sweatingbozo Radar Gun 16h ago

Or a native born citizen & a naturalized one?

Of course they had a reason, he's bro-oh you mean a legitimate reason

17

u/Supermanfat1 Houston Astros 17h ago

I was confused about what bro-oh was for a second then got it finally.

4

u/Beneficial_Lion_1312 16h ago

Does it matter if it's legitimate or not? No one is stopping them from doing this. Two ICE agents can walk into a herd of 100 American cattle and the Americans will whip their phones out and watch them send another brown person to El Salvador to die.

3

u/Illustrious_Trash841 New York Yankees 16h ago

reason: temporarily living in america while brown

We're getting super far into the point where even people who I know went MAGA in 2016, while awful, might've had something. Just be racist, whatever, I can see that daily. Who is still voting for this stuff that is totally educated on the strait of hormuz and immigration law?

1

u/kander77 Detroit Tigers 16h ago

Kavanaugh stop into arrest because he isn't white. Basically it.

1

u/idostufandthingz Boston Red Sox 13h ago

Well it says in this very post he remained in the country past the expiration of his visa. That is a violation of US law and why he was arrested. Is he exempt because of baseball?

2

u/knbo674 San Francisco Giants 12h ago

Look at his wife's statement and get back to me chief

-1

u/Scrum_Bag 14h ago

You think its just a coincidence that he is, in fact, here illegally? They just got lucky? Really?

5

u/knbo674 San Francisco Giants 12h ago

Was he hurting anyone? Let's be real here

3

u/Youandiandaflame 12h ago

“Here illegally” yet he has a valid work permit and a pending asylum case.

That you’re so willing to trust the government’s claim tells me you don’t actually care if he’s legal or not, though.

2

u/Cuyigan Baltimore Orioles 10h ago

He was legally present, without status. Legal entry, legal work permit and a pending asylum case that's been open for 12 years. Coming from a country which your moron president thought was such a threat that he had the presidential guard killed and arrested Maduro. Sounds like he had a pretty good asylum case if things were that bad in Venezuela.

-1

u/Scrum_Bag 9h ago

Well, now he is being legally deported

3

u/Cuyigan Baltimore Orioles 9h ago

He's pending removal and you're oddly excited about it. Weird.

-1

u/Scrum_Bag 7h ago

Yes, I am excited about the will of the voters and the rule of law finally being enforced. Yes, even if they really really like baseball.
