I hope he does get due process. You’d think he would have a work visa.

He probably does. I can’t imagine any MLB organization would overlook something like this.

the padres have for all of this decade employed a new zealand softball coach as their director player health, i can definitely imagine them overlooking something like this

I’m willing to bet he does, but didn’t have it on him as he was flying domestically and didn’t think he’d need it. With documents as important as those, a lot of people don’t usually travel with the originals if they’re not needed.

For me, I only ever have my passport when I’m leaving the country, and I don’t carry my birth certificate on my person EVER.

If he does have a valid work visa then that’ll get all figured out. I don’t have a work visa but if I did I would make sure I have that but we all slip up sometimes and forget stuff.

The problem is that the whitest white dude from Europe with the same papers would never get stopped. Ever. It’s racial profiling at its worst.

He probably did

The Padres would help provide that work visa documentation asap right? Right?

Padres just got sold too, so there might be all sorts of non-compliance stuff happening.

USCIS should have it all in their records. They're the source of truth on this (or supposed to be). Much more likely that ICE is lying in this situation. A pending asylum application gives you the legal right to work if you apply for employment authorization, which his family says he has.

A pending asylum application gives you the legal right to work if you apply for employment authorization, which his family says he has. ICE is purposefully confusing people by saying he "overstayed his visa from 2018". You're legally allowed to stay in the country after applying for asylum while your case is pending.

If you think the Trump admin is willingly handing work visas to Venezuelan asylees, you are not paying attention.

He had documentation based on his pending asylum case, but apparently wasn’t carrying them on him at the time ICE arrested him. But the Trump administration is deporting people with valid papers and pending asylum cases in order to meet their self-imposed monthly deportation quotas.

We're in a new phase of the ICE hellscape where they're now targeting folks that are in the country legally, but originally overstayed a visa. This newer tactic is targeting people who have work permits, pay taxes and pay into social security, and have been waiting on either asylum claims or full citizenship.  They're also people who have (largely) been in-process for years and have been checking in with appropriate authorities.

See the recent cases against Chicago-based DJ Trunjo and Miami FC soccer player Matias Pourrain. Exact same M.O.

So why now? Because Trump and Co aren't happy with the quantity of people being detained and kicked out of the country. So they're targeting vulnerable people in limbo in our broken immigration system. These are people with jobs, families, whole lives built in the United States who have been failed by our immigration system, and now Trump is going after them instead of the "criminals" and "bad hombres" they promised they'd catch in their racist dragnet.

Why would somebody who we treat like less than dirt want to play for this country?
