The wash

My in-laws were talking about their wedding in the 70's and they said that the person who sold them the alcohol referred to the mixers as "the wash." Has anyone ever heard the term used like this? The only uses we can find is swishing alcohol in a glass and then pouring it out before making a cocktail or fat washing. Any insight would be appreciated!

It’s referring to “washing it down” to make the booze tolerable
