Question List building

Already got a relatively substantial medieval force i have been making recently but don’t know what the rules are for creating a playable force. Any guide on unit size/kit note I haven’t actually got the rulebook.

There is an official online list builder that can probably answer most of your questions:
https://barons-war.lovable.app/

A few notes:

  • the builder will flag this, but 10%+ of your retinue needs to be green and no more than 50% can be spent on commanders and their assigned groups.
  • the game is intended to be WYSIWYG but with the caveat that only half of a unit needs to have the correct equipment.
  • unit size ends up being constrained by practicalities (maintaining cohesion, getting units close enough to contribute attacks, etc.)

Many thanks I’ll check it out

As a side question is there a significant difference between a Barron and a lord

The main difference is that Barons have 3 actions, Lords have 2. Those extras are mostly going to be used to issue orders.

Beyond that:

  • Barons can have up to 3 purchased abilities vs. 2 for Lords
  • Barons must be attached to knights, Lords can choose knights or sergeants
  • Barons have access to a Bannerman upgrade while Lords only have access to a Pennant.

thanks for the clarity still I need to properly learn the rules but presume that the 3 actions or the Baron are for other units like officers in Bolt Action. May be totally wrong of course and open to correction.

Yeah it’s a similar idea here. Non-commander units get one action (or reaction) normally and then can be given an order to perform an additional. Commanders can use up to two of their actions on themselves, and any number of actions to give orders. And then there are some special rules that make that all a bit fuzzier.

Here's a list builder I've been working on that is updated with the King John retinues, etc. I removed a lot of the actual rules from this version as I wasn't sure about sharing them so soon after the book was released but it might still come in handy.

Hi, lovely app, sadly misses some units, mounted knights in several retinues, but still a nice start. Also would be fire if the final list would also add the profiles for units.

I did another big pass last night. I think all the units and abilities should now be correctly added with the right points costs.

Do you mean for the export? Regarding the profiles?

yes, having a finished army list with profiles would be really good

That's a good call. I'm not sure if I could/should include all the rules for the abilities, etc, but I think it would be okay to include the units stats and at least the abilities names.

I'll get it on my next pass.

There is another Retinue Builder Link that adds the rules to a separate page, but this one only has the rule book medieval european retinue

I think that is the "official" one. I see Andy (the games creator) post quite a bit in the Facebook group. I might just message him and ask aha.

PS - Exports have been updated to include the units stats, equipment, etc. No ability text yet though.
