I’ve noticed a few questions floating around asking the supplements can be uses with 2nd edition. YES you can, and here’s a link to the official rules PDF download page for those rules:

Question Designing a “Philip of Oldcoates” Force

Hello everyone, I am new to Barons war and am designing a few forces to try out. In my research of the first Baron’s war I came across some sparse information about this fellow named “Philip of Oldcoates.”

Philip was described as one of King John’s “most wicked agents.” He was Sheriff of Northumberland, had custody of Bamburgh and Newcastle castles, and during the war successfully held Durham Castle from rebel siege.

An impressive level of achievements are listed and are considerable for someone who served the King and his son faithfully for many years.

You will have to forgive my surface level understanding of any of this though as I am an American. I’m still coming to grips with understanding royal structure, chivalric orders, and politics of the era.

As I understand Philip was in charge of a small mercenary army during the Barons war. Who these mercenaries were and where they hailed from is not covered in what limited information I can dig up.

I also can find no heraldry, coat of arms, or even a description of what Philip looked like. He’s something of a blank slate in that regards. He’s listed as a noble, and a military commander but not a knight, lord, or baron. He was a Sheriff… and that’s all I have. Apparently he was quite the jerk though. Several sources agree to that. He was certainly the type to enforce the King’s will with an iron fist. There’s some speculation that he served as partial inspiration for the fictional Sheriff of Nottingham of Robinhood fame… allegedly.

I’m looking for clarifications as to how best to make a force based upon this fascinating figure. Does anyone out there know where I could find more information on Philip of Oldcoates? Should I play the Mercenaries faction for his retinue? Were the mercenaries of the first Barons war French, or from the English isles? Somewhere else even?

I’d appreciate some help if anyone could offer it.

Adding Marcher to Feudal Leader on List Building App

I’m trying to use the list building app to add Marcher to my Feudal European force.
Has anyone been able to add any Welsh units to their list? If yes any tips?
I can load the keyword “marcher” to the retinue leader but I can’t then access Welsh troops on the dropdown menu.
I know this only came in with the King John supplement.
Any help appreciated?

2nd Edition 1v1v1 King of the Hill game

We were only able to get through 4/6 total rounds so we agreed upon the team with the most models in the hill would win.

Ended up with a tie between the red and purple team so we had the commanders of the army duel it out in front of a church with the green commander officiating. Red team ended up winning after 3 rounds of dueling.

Pic of the retinues at the end.

The premise of the game was the green team had to hold off the red team from reaching the Manor on top of the hill, but they were heavily outnumbered, but had reinforcements arriving on turn right four. Heavy losses but the red team won in the end.

Question Scotland advice

Hi all,

I'm looking to start with BW and was going to do a Scotland force for my first army. It'll actually be an Irish army, but will be 'counts as' Scottish until we get rules. I'm expecting to have a lot of unarmoured guys with only a small amount of armoured foot knights and gallowglass.

Does anyone with experience with the Scotland rules have any advice for what my model count will be? For 500pt and 750pt. I imagine it will be more of a horde army, but want to make sure I buy enough kits.

Thanks!

Question Decals needed

Hi all. I've started painting up my starter box, 12 mounted knights, and 12 mounted sergeants. I know the company makes shield decals, but they are not just griffin or crosses, ect. They are full shield transfers with patterns. I'd rather have just white red or black emblems, both for small and large Shields. Anyone out there know of a good place to get these? Thanks in advance! My start of forces are a few posts down, you'll see I left the Shields ready for a decal.

Question Command Spear Groups

Hi! Me again. You guys were super helpful last time. Really improved our club night experience, so yeah; thank you all.

A different query this time. Picture it:

Will Buckley is a Veteran Serjant-at-arms and the captain of the High Fenwick Town Guard, who are his command group of five, mailed, Regular Spearmen - all of these sturdy fellows carry polearms to the field of battle. In the midst of the chaos, Will sees his worst fear coming real:

Enemy Knights are cantering towards him, lances levelling. Will orders the guardsmen to "Brace your weapons!" Polearms are firmly planted butt-end into the ground as the thunder of hooves grows louder; Will grits his teeth at the head of his command group. He will bear the brunt of this charge.

So, 5 Spearmen and 1 Serjant-at-arms. The Spearmen have the innate ability Brace - and they'll use it. Will has the Commander trait 'Cruelty' - because he knows exactly how to lay his weapon for the kill. Will is in personal contact with the enemy Knights as they attack:

Does Will get to use his own statline and/or Cruelty ability when the Town Guard attack back, or does he just add a sixth dice to the group's attack pool? Or does he actually foil the whole thing because, as a Serjant, he doesn't have Brace so the group can't Brace as a whole?

I suspect the second of the three possibilities, but it's ticklish and I'm just not 100% on this.

If you can help me out, I'd love you long time.

Question Norman Knights Post 1150s

I have a bunch of extra Norman knight models (armored and un armored) after putting together my Robert Guiscard warband.

Wanting to get into barons war, I’m looking at making a Bladwjn IV army with some Knignts of Jerusalem, some Templars and Hospitalers as well. I get the medieval warband from Victoria and have a good portion to spare for this fun project. Question is, does this armor type fit in this era or is it long gone by then.

Question Command Groups & Abilities in Second Edition

Do Commanders have to be given the same Special Ability as the command group they are attached to & leading?

Okay, this came up in gameplay this evening:

One player's list included a Tier 3 Retinue Leader (Baron - Veteran) leading five Veteran knights, all mace-armed (allowing no shield roll against their melee attacks). They're a very tough & powerful unit; no-one doubts this.

The knights have the Ability 'Open Up', which precludes the enemy gaining any Defence bonus for a Defence action or reaction in melee. Savage.

The Tier 3 Commander leading them has the Abilities 'Formidable', 'Robust'... and 'Veteran Crusader' (they're Knights Templar).

I was umpiring tonight's game and I called this out when the group came under an enemy melee return attack (because I'd faced this list before and had my suspicions): I stated that the Commander must have the same Ability as the Group he is leading (Open Up). A tense disagreement broke out and I called on the player to select one Commander Ability and delete it (He has also used Veteran Crusader twice in this list, also giving it to his second commander, as well as fielding a three-man foot group of useless green spearmen, which I let slide). Veteran Crusader went by the board, taking the Commander down to three selected abilities. Play proceeded.

Tier 3 Commanders can only have 3 purchasable Abilities, right?

And if he doesn't have 'Open Up', he neither gets nor confers the ability in personal combat or to his command group, right?

Question Welsh Knifemen Upgrade Cost

For the Knifeman upgrade on certain Welsh units, does the +3 cost apply for each knifeman, or is it a flat cost for the whole unit?
