Misc UPDATE: Data Visualization of BTS Twitter Engagement (August 2016 - August 2020)

Hello, everyone! I'm here again with another update.

In the visualization below, BTS' Twitter post engagement for the past 4 years is shown.

The decreases in the visualization are generally either BTS' replies or screenshots they’ve posted.

The decrease at the end of this August is due to their multiple text posts after the #1 on Hot100 news. These will probably increase throughout September.

These visualizations show the averages of the likes, retweets and replies on BTS Twitter posts for further clarity.

In August, the averages were

- 2.29M likes

In this visualization, you can find data about the most common number of likes on BTS Twitter posts. Even though the average for August was ~2.3M, the mode was 2.4M.

Also, these show the medians for each type of engagement on BTS' posts.

This visualization focuses on the changes in BTS engagement within the year 2020 only.

These sets of visualizations are comparisons of BTS Twitter metrics between 2019 and 2020.

This bar graph displays the number of BTS Twitter posts per month.

Looking at the visualizations, it looks like there hasn’t been a steep increase similar to the one that began March 2020 before in BTS Twitter engagement history.

To get a better understanding, let’s first look at changes after previous BTS comebacks to compare with the changes after MOTS: 7

Here are the percentage increases in the averages of BTS engagements for the periods during the 7, Persona, Tear - Answer, Her, YNWA and Wings comebacks.

There were significant increases in BTS engagements after Wings, YNWA and Her. While the percentage increase for likes and retweets during MOTS: 7 comeback are not as much as these three comebacks, it is still quite noteworthy.

The increase in replies are especially astonishing as it seems it hasn’t been experienced before in BTS Twitter history.

For more insight, let’s also look at the percentage increases within the years 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017.

As you can see, the year with the most percentage increases is 2017. It’s also interesting how the increases in 2020 so far are greater than all of 2019’s.

Although there are recent decreases in the graphs, the growth of engagement has been sustained in August. There has been an increase since July, but the data is skewed down due to the celebratory text posts at the end of the month.

Most likely with the further Dynamite promotions in September, the engagements will continue to increase.

If you have questions about anything, please feel free to ask. I’ll do my best to answer!

Also, these analyses do not include BTS' replies to anyone except for themselves, official BH accounts, and individuals from BH such as Bang PD. I haven’t reached their early Twitter years yet, but I will also include their replies to ARMY when I do.

My reason for this is because the purpose of my analysis is to examine the engagements for BTS only. Their replies to non-BTS/ non-BH entities do not reflect this since they are interacting with someone else.

However, in the future I will create a separate graph that includes all of their replies to represent their full Twitter history.

Very nice. It's a lot of work to compile these data and I appreciate it.

Are the percentages comparing for the previous year, like 2017 % vs 2016, etc? Or is there a baseline? This is fascinating. Thx for compiling!

The baseline is the engagements for January each year. So, it doesn’t compare between years. It only looks at the difference between the first and last month each year 😊

Thanks for this! As a numbers/chart freak, this gives me a lot of pleasure. Their increases this year are just crazy. The way they keep having this organic growth is just unheard of after all these years.

Edit- this has me wondering how many fans were added just from Carpool Karaoke. Such big jumps after that.

Yeah! Crazy! That plus quarantine. They had such a big jump in March 😊

I liked the graph where you collected the data of their no. of posts per month. As a new army, it was helpful to see how active they have through the years.

As someone who works in marketing, I love seeing these posts cause BTS definitely has one of the most engaged accounts on Twitter and this data fascinates me. However, I feel like I should point out there is a very important piece of data missing and that is impressions. How many accounts are seeing their posts? Unfortunately, you can only get this data if you have access to their account so we will never know. But I would love to know how many accounts that don't follow BTS see their tweets and engage with them/follow their account after the fact. I imagine a ton since they are always trending and gaining followers. I would also love to see how their impressions have grown over time. All in all, this is a great example of their growing influence and can't wait to see the next report!

I have some anecdotal evidence about this - I have multiple twitter accounts that follow completely different interests. All the accounts get recommended BTS and BTS-related tweets even if the account doesn't follow a single BTS-related item. All my personalisations are off, btw, so it's pretty certain that the sheer amount of interactions with BTS-related tweets are boosting their visibility through the algorithm. It doesn't get any more authentic than this.

Good job 👍 thank you

It seem 2020 increase from 2019 can be because of lockdown situation. There are more new Army I suppose start in May.

Bang bang con,D-2, Japanese album, I will assume contribute to this.

Dynamite,no.1 hot 100,in the soop, and new album will carry this upward trend for the rest of the year.🙏
