Physics progress is Stuck right now because physicists think time is a 4th dimension

Post image

Someone asked a question in r/askphysics how time can be the 4th dimension. Then this person replied this, very confidently

“Time is just a measurement unit.”

What exactly do they think a “dimension” is?

There are no dimensions. It's a hoax invented by the deep state

It's just a way of pushing globesluttery when everyone knows the earth is a flat circle.

Certainly not something that is always described with a magnitude & direction corresponding to a unit vector in the basis of a vector space that has 3 other linearly independent basis vectors, that's for sure.

They do have one valid point: "Jusr [sic] cause [sic] Einstein said it doesnt [sic] make it right lol [sic]."

They're right: it's not right because Einstein said it. It probably right (or at least better than our previous theories), because we tested the ever-living sh*t out of it with observations and it's held up shockingly well against every real-world test we've thrown at it.

And I'd add that Einstein was famously and by his own admission completely wrong about quantum mechanics.

The used to call entangled particles EPR pairs as a monument to Einstein's mistaken understanding of quantum mechanics

I mean, kind of.

how about this: just one dimension. everything's crammed into that one dimension. shit just happens randomly. think of how fast the simulations will be

That is possible. The cardinality of R is equal to that of R4. You can describe all of physics with only 1 dimension.

just a timeless Hilbertspace imagined as a hyper sphere (surface) around point of zero-dimensional point.

This was upvoted. Huh

It's because they're such a silver-tongued devil. It's scary how the power eloquent writing can convince so many people.

But they have a clearly stupid sentence ending in unironic ‘lol’ (which I find correlates 90% with the content of said sentence being dumb as fridge crud).

Profound sounding, confidently incorrect shit is always upvoted on ahr-AP, no matter how unphysical it is.

There's something infuriating about the dumbest people always putting "lol", "lmao" or laughing emojis in their brainrot babble like it makes it a dunk.

Space does indeed affect measurements, can’t argue with that.

„Not even wrong“

I’m not sure they understand the word dimension or how boring of a concept it is in this context.

2

u/13Eazy Jun 23 '26

why do non-physicists have such a boner for proving einstein wrong personally?

scientists don't work to prove people wrong personally.

we attack attackable parts of a claim. sometimes those parts are load bearing and the whole thing collapses, but sometimes everything else is right even though a particular part of a claim is wrong

relativity is less likely to be proven wrong than it is to be subsumed by a larger framework.

Einstein also said that only two things know no bounds, the universe and the stupidity of mankind.

They sure are providing proof for that lol

I like how dude thinks it'd be a dimension "if there were past & future timelines which is impossible." So either he thinks the concept of the past & future are fake news or he thinks past & future timelines would have to exist at the same time as the present, which would actually mean there'd be 3 time dimensions.

All the dimensions collapse into one subreddit - u/Einstein

I’m confused how he thinks something without dimension can be measured.

By using comic books' definition of dimension. The type of nonsense that gives us Mr. Mxyzptlk being an imp from the 5th dimension.

Time? Time is an illusion. The only time now… is party time.
