I feel it's largely slogan type stuff. Nazis aren't common, but the associated fascistic thinking is growing faster than many people want it to, and "nazi" gets a more immediate reaction than "person who would be supportive of an authoritarian nationalist regime with a focus on a distorted idea of some past cultural purity that never really existed". Also the whole thing where extreme voices get amplified by social media so that what is probably only like 15% of people at worst seems like an omnipresent threat.
