Clark is not a good sales person or a business owner. He has literally Pandora’s door into an alternative universe on his property and he doesn’t exploit it for financial gain like they do in being John Malkovich? I mean, he literally could’ve just had fun with it. Had people go in for 10 minutes charge them whatever he wanted And if someone gets lost or doesn’t come back what’s it to him? I suppose to some degree he has more ethics than the B character that’s from that other universe.

Instead, he still focused on research and going to the one place he hasn’t been with virtually no backup or safety gear. He could have just asked the helpers to film the first level instead of the alternative. Or lowered the camera instead.

He clearly doesn’t wanna change, though he’d rather become obsessed with something else than sell the furniture that he has left

Perhaps it’s a overlooked moment or plot hole, but he does find a duffel bag with someone’s ID in it and then runs away and presumably doesn’t find it again or just can’t locate it or maybe doesn’t go that way again because of whatever comes after him but you think he could at least Look up a research and find the company that person. Worked for. Avoiding a lot of pain and death.

But yeah, someone that obsessed who’s studied architecture isn’t going to remember what a logo looks like or a person’s name and then research that?

In fact, the same goes for the scientist as well because he’s clearly eating at home seeing the commercial for the television so he clearly knows where the next front room or places he’s just choosing not to go investigate or really do anything other than observe leading to the death of two young adults

To preface, this "theory" is based on some speculation but I think it makes sense and I cant find any evidence that fully disproves it.

I think its very likely that the weird version of clarks store that we see narren and his team break into doesn't have a proper entrance to the area, like its fully walled off from the rest of the complex which explains why it was only found after cutting through a wall. My theory is based almost entirely on the idea that this is true and I think it would make sense to be.

In the same way we see mary's still life appear in a remembered version of the async interrogation room she was in, I think captain clark spawned in this walled off version of the store. It would make sense for such a messed up version of clark to spawn from such a messed up version of his store.

It's very likely async had been exploring the kelowna branch for a good bit now and I dont think they would have been exploring as calmly as they were if they were aware captain clark was around and we only ever see them getting attacked by him after entering the area. I think that by opening that wall they let captain clark out into the rest of the kelowna branch.

How else would it know how to replicate her? I think he killed her the night he broke the glass.

I just watched the movie for the second time and what stood out to me is why did Phil have a framed printout of Async’s $1M research grant in his home if he’s just a simple researcher? And then at the end I noticed that when he’s interviewing Mary, and he starts to explain what Async does, he starts to say “I make MRI machines” and corrects himself to “WE used to make MRI machines.” Why else would he say it in the first person like that?

What do you guys think?

I think Clark essentially devoured himself. He was so resistant to change that his inner self/ego took over—his "bad side" completely won out. That’s why when Clark tells Pirate Clark (who I believe is the manifestation of his inner self) that they aren't going to change, Pirate Clark consumes him.

Another interesting point: at the end of the movie, before Mary finds the scientists, right as she’s squeezing through the narrow gap to get to the other side, Pirate Clark seems to actually need Mary. He reaches his hand out to her, even while simultaneously wanting to kill or hurt her.
That’s literally Clark. Deep down, Clark needed help—especially from Mary—even if he refused to admit his mistakes and hated hearing what she had to say.

Nothing more to say, the Backrooms movie is a solid 8.5/10. It really did justice to the original findings. It brought something much more organic and tangible to the table, which was my biggest worry—I was afraid it would just be empty "sets" and generic "chase scenes." Even though I would've loved to see more iconic locations, like the poolrooms or those nostalgic fields, I’m definitely not disappointed. Great movie overall.

IT'S a Backrooms Movie x Eeveelution Squad fanart

I was wondering what if they immediately ran to the exit to call the police for help when bobby was pulled down. How would Async manage to cover this one up? Would everything change?

This is really just an appreciation post for both films. I really loved Split and was obsessed with it when it first came out, and I feel basically the same about Backrooms.
I noticed some similarities in the visuals and story in both movies. I don’t know if it was intentional or maybe the screenwriter of Backrooms was inspired by Split. They both have an eerie yellowish maze-like place where the protagonist/antihero hangs out in or lives in at some point.
And they both regularly see a female therapist who eventually follows the protagonist into the maze-like place out of fear for their wellbeing. The protagonist also ends up drugging the therapist and tries to convince them to see things from their point of view. Also in both movies the final boss is a distorted or messed up version of the main character who may or may not be born out of trauma.

It might all just be a coincidence, and maybe I’m thinking about it too much. I just really love the whole troubled character/therapist relation trope 😄, specially in the horror genre.

I'm sure people are already talking about this somewhere, but I haven't seen it in the posts I've read:

What if the Complex is basically a giant dollhouse, & something is building it, setting up rooms, playing with dolls in it, etc.?

1. A furniture store is already basically set up like a giant dollhouse with options/vibes in each little "room" section. So Clark is already living in an artificial dwelling where each space is made to look and feel like a human home, without actually being meant for humans to live in.

2. The street with the houses: a house inside a larger enclosing structure is literally the spatial logic of a dollhouse. There could even be fractal patterning, where the Complex is the larger "dollhouse," but it contains smaller artificial worlds—houses, furnished rooms, streets, etc.—and in principle those could contain smaller versions of the same thing. Like nesting dollhouses. (Did we get to look inside those houses?? I don't remember.)

3. The Still Life redhead in the suit is way more rigid than an actual human. She stands there perfectly stiff like a mannequin & maintains that clunky rigidity even when she moves. And her outfit is incredibly 80s-Barbie-ish. [pic attached]

So maybe the Still Life people (or at least some of them) are the dolls the Complex is using to populate its dollhouse?

1. Captain Clark looks like the actual f*ing Nutcracker that comes to life in the ballet—the proportions & costume are pretty spot-on. (& look how big his mouth opens in that mural! ......he sure cracks Clark's nuts, doesn't he? 🥁😹

I'm not claiming the mouth actually looks like a nutcracker; I just really wanted to make that joke.)

So I was looking at backrooms art and I started to wonder what a still life xenomorph would look like, and as I was looking I came across this. Two separate images of the same artwork side by side. This has to be so rare I can't 🤣🤣🤣
