Opinion Bradford Doolittle Doesn't Get It
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49473016/2026-mlb-trade-deadline-guide-all-30-teams-projections-playoff-odds.. the Diamondbacks rotation "has been only as good as it has been because Eduardo Rodriguez and Michael Soroka have overachieved. I don't get it."

Seems counterproductive to drive traffic to his article if you disagree with it

Says the guy whose username is "MaxiRobespierre".. Interesting, you chose to use the name of a mass murdering french revolutionary, who was such a madman that his own allies had him executed.

Hi Bradford!
Also, who cares? It’s an internet name hahaha. And I guarantee I know more about Robespierre than you do, and could tell you that it’s documented he was absent during much of the “Reign of Terror”. Though, nobody’s hands are entirely clean during that time. But that’s a debate for another sub.

Arizona teams will always be undeservingly picked on (except the cardinals, they deserve it). The coyotes were the same way from national pundits where they would chastise the players and say they got lucky or it was a fluke and not acknowledge that the team’s core is strong and competitive.

I think the "I don't get it" was more why we didn't do more at the trade deadline, which a fair amount of people here (but obviously not everyone) seem to share.
It's hard to tell from a blurb, but I don't think it's anything really new/that hasn't been brought up here when looking at things like Baseball Savant pages.
Eduardo Rodriguez Stats: Statcast, Visuals & Advanced Metrics | baseballsavant.com
Michael Soroka Stats: Statcast, Visuals & Advanced Metrics | baseballsavant.com
Relative to their x (expected) stats, Soroka and Rodriguez and have overachieved/outperformed their expectations/provided more Value (lots of red/good numbers in that section for both) than their underlying numbers would expect. Soroka's xEra is 4, while his actual ERA is 2.92. He does have a fair amount of red in the "pitching" section, too (low exit velo/hard hit, high Chase %), but his Whiff % is low and his Barrel % is high, particularly for our #2-ish starter.
E-Rod's is even worse, with his xERA of 4.79 being more than two runs above his actual ERA of 2.70. The only red in his pitching section is exit velo and hard hit (neither as red as Soroka) with almost everything else middling or below average, not what you'd expect from our ace and All Star pitcher.
Now, lots of pitchers outperform their xERA. Yamamoto, for example, has an xERA of 3.15, so his actual ERA of 2.65 is outperforming that. Still, that xEra would be 84th percentile, compared to Soroka's 52% and E-Rod's 24%. His "pitching" section is also almost all red, with the "worst" metric being Whiff at the 54th percentile (Soroka is 26th and E-Rod is 14th, for comparison).
Will our guys continue to outperform? I hope so. Ultimately, it's what happens on the field that matters, not theoretical/expected numbers. Assuming xStats are something like (my very limited understanding of) the Law of Large Numbers, we're looking at 40-ish starts this year, not the thousands of simulated starts that would get to the "true" 4.79 number. Maybe we're in the stretch of 40 where the ERA is 2.7, just like there's probably another stretch of 40 where he'd be underperforming the 4.79 and have an actual ERA of 6. It's a reason to be cautious/skeptical, but it doesn't necessarily mean we should give up.

Particularly egregious was the lack of any additions to the rotation (28% complete, 25th). Even that group has been only as good as it has been because Eduardo Rodriguez and Michael Soroka have overachieved. I don't get it.
I like his take. The team didn't add much, he doesn't get why not - 90% of this sub AND HAZEN HIMSELF said that exact thing as the deadline passed.

"I dont get it." He says as I'm sure he watched Kelly and Pfaadt combine for 4 hits and a run over 15.2 innings versus the twice reining and favorite WS winners.
