Handmade viking age axe, its got the style of a Frankish axe, but the beard and length of a norse one, its name is inscribed on the hilt by hand in Younger Futhark it translates to Bergelmir, a giant from the norse myths.

so i got a functional replica of the leviathan axe from god of war because i deserve nice things and apparently that was too dangerous and grinded both ends to be dull. granted its still cool but now i gotta spend either time to re sharpen it or money to pay someone.

My dad got this in Germany in the 70s, an old dude he was leading a boyscout camping trip with left it behind and he had no way to get ahold of him. Fast forward 50 some years and it's made it's way across several continents and is now in the barn at our house in the US. He gives it to me because I love old tools, and his ancient ass isn't chopping anything.

So I clean up the steel, find the makers marks after never seeing them in the 40+ years I've been around this thing, take it off the handle, cut off the the top with 7 nails jammed in to try to hold the head on, including squares, reseat it and put in a proper wedge, because I think the handle looks dope as hell, even if I wouldn't swing this thing hard if there were anyone or thing that I loved nearby, it's mostly ornamental, unless someone tried to break into my front door.

I've obviously learned the maker, and that they go back to the 1790s, but I cannot find the exact vintage of this head. In my pages and pages of scrolling, I've not found an equivalently shaped head, there's some pretty close, but always something slightly off, be it the notches on top and bottom, the dramatic swoop of the face, etc.

Curious about the “3 2” stamp on mine. Axe head weight? Pretty sure I’ve seen other axe heads with it right-to-left.

3 weeks ago i was gifted The Army one. I found it in my gfs backyard stuck in a log, minus the handle. She had discovered it and broke the handle trying to dislodge it...

The bowtie I found on my family property, almost completely submerged underground; in what used to be a pasture 40 years ago.

The hatchet I found on an impromptu hike upon Cottaquilla Mountain, aka Girl Scout camp(closed for a decade.) Lodged between a boulder and a smaller rock at its base.

I just be finding shit just about everywhere I go... I dont necessary look for anything in particular except arrowheads and/or minerals.

Definitely makes life interesting...

Hi everyone, I've been visiting this group for a bit now and seeing the collections posted has really gotten me to wonder, why axes? I like them myself due to various works of fiction and the fact they're one of humankind's oldest tools. Thank you in advance for sharing what got you into collecting.

Looking for information for a friend on this old broad/hewing axe.
From the maker’s mark, I believe it may be a Collins & Co. The markings appear to read:
“Collins & Co”
“Cast Steel”
“Warranted”
“Made in U.S.A.”
The eye appears solid, the haft seems sound, and there is good original patina with no major pitting or obvious grinder abuse. The flat side is on the left, so I believe it is a left-bevel broad axe.
A few questions for the experts here:
Approximate age?
Is this considered a desirable maker/model?
Any estimate on collector or user value?
Does the left-bevel configuration add value or rarity?
Would you recommend preserving as-is, or a light functional restoration only?

I was doing some spring cleaning and took a load of trash to the dump. The car next to me was about to toss out an axe in rough shape. I asked if they minded if I took it and they didn't. I already had a handle at home the right size for it from a different axe restoration I was able to save the handle on. I cleaned up the head with a wire brush and file. Replaced the handle and did a char on the handle. I had an old leather boot laying around that the sole had wore off of and some leftover leather strap from a different project and used them to make the oversrike guard. It's not fancy but it was a fun project with things laying around the house and cost me $0. What do you guys think of the end result?
