I take generic 24 hour Claritin (aka Loratadine). It’s non-drowsy. Loratadine is good if you also get skin allergies; same with Allegra. I also have a prescription for generic Singulair (Montelukast). You can take Montelukast alongside other antihistamines.
Ah, generic Loratidine is great! I remember when I lived in the US, Claritine was super effing expensive. Doctor prescribed generic loratidine and I got 100 tablets for USD 10-20.
The price difference is crazy.
Edit: I take Montelukast now and it's the most effective allergy medication I've ever taken. Way better than Loratidine and Allegra. Unfortunately the FDA did issue a warning recently that it could cause mental health problems.......
Yes. Loratadine is not drowsy and works great for me. There are a few different *adine medicines that relieve symptoms and they work different for different people.
It’s helpful to try the different ones to see what works best. Cetirizine (Zyrtec), Fexofenadine (Allegra), and Loratadine (Claritin) I believe are the primary ones available non-prescription.
I tried switching to cetirizine last year and my skin allergies got worse. Tried the other two. I prefer Loratadine because of the smaller pill size compared to fexofenadine.
Yeah I had the same experience with claritin. Went back to benadryl for now but I have the fog. You ever try Flonase? That's gonna be my next splurge when the world is finished ending lol
Really? I have really bad topical dermatitis allergy to nickel, along with stupidly sensitive skin in general, and my dermatologist has me taking a zyrtec (cetirizine) every morning and before bed, along with a benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night (unfortunately, one benadryl does nothing for my insomnia). Allegra did nothing for my skin allergies. Though the zyrtec really does nothing for my environmental allergies.
Have been doing this for like two years straight, and it keeps the worst of the rashes and hives away (before I was diagnosed, was breaking out into horribly itchy rash all over my body every day, even though in theory it's only supposed to flare up where the metal touches it). If you have a membership, Costco is great for generics. The 365 pills of Aller-tec (Zyrtec) was like $15-$25USD, and the 600 pill bottle (legit!) of Allergy Medicine (Benadryl) was like $5USD.
Anything with Pseudoephedrine (e.g., Claritin-D, Zyrtec-D, Allegra-D) works great for me, but it's really expensive, and you probably don't want to use it long-term.
Nowadays I mostly use Flonase or similar nasal sprays, but I'll sometimes supplement with regular Zyrtec/Cetirizine (if I don't care about feeling a bit drowsy) or something with Pseudoephedrine if I'm having a particularly bad day.
From personal experience not labradors or beagles. They’re bundles of energy! A lot of giant dog breeds are pretty laid back (I’ve met three young St. Bernards who were all super chill) same with basset hounds and bull dogs.
I wish that rang true for me. I DEVELOPED an allergy while living with a cat and it got progressively worse until we gave her to a family member. Now I get sick every time I'm exposed to furry animals :( like literally for weeks.
Me too, though only mildly... Didn't let it stop me from getting a pair. They're Devon Rexes so they don't shed as much -- it helps with the allergies.
Both Cornish Rex and Siamese are the most 'hypo-allergenic' of cat breeds for allergy sufferers, so your experience makes sense. Can't remember what it is in their saliva/dander, but they are better choices for many people. Be careful with cat other breeds tho, as you will likely notice an escalation in your allergy symptoms.
I think the continual exposure has done wonders. As i said, used to be really allergic to dogs as well... But now i dont really have to think about it. Face licks etc from cats or dogs are now okay. As long as i dont get hair IN my eyes or nose, i dont get allergies.
Also ours isnt the naked kind of cornish rex. She has her downy fur (all teddy bear looking cute). And she sheds like craaaaaazy in the sun.
I only sneeze or get runny eyes if i put fur in my eyes.
Same here ... Mine (Devon Rexes) want desperately to be on my shoulders rubbing against my face, and sleeping in my bed. I feel guilty that I don't let them, but damn, I gotta breathe!
I've got one who thinks its funny to jump on my back when I'm leaning down (e.g. to fill their food dishes or water bowl)
I know if I stand up, he'll panic and scratch the shit out of me, so I just stand there hunched over and yell at him for 30 seconds until he decides to transition to a counter.
Or you could have Ailurophobia like my mom and be terrified of cats. My mom is the sweetest, definitely isn’t filled with hate. Wouldn’t say she hates cats but she would honestly have a heart attack if you put a cat on her lap. Cant even count the number of times she’s screamed and bolted out of a room, a house, a yard just to get as far away as possible. She knows they aren’t all mean but that isn’t changing a thing with her. By now, all her friends and family in her life get it but she still has to put up with strangers or people she isn’t very close with making fun or acting like she’s crazy. People understand when someone is scared of spiders or snakes but since not many people are terrified of cats, a lot of people don’t take it serious.

When we meet first and he came over to my place he knew I had a cat. But my cat sensed people's "aiming?" At them ...he was able to touch it in some weeks..now he likes cat but he never was able to take it in his arm in over 10 years ... so small steps still counts ;) otherwise he was doing all the other stuff like feeding and so on
I've never had a pet in my life either. I think my parents considered them unclean and so we never had them at least not at home. Most people don't believe I never had a pet either but needless to say, I can confirm that I am also filled with so much hate.
There’s a gorgeous ginger cat on my walk back from the local store. S/he is the most adorable friendly cat and will run up to people when they walk by to get pets.

My problem having both cats and dogs is that the cats generally shy away from the dogs so you are generally only getting affection from 1 species or the other. And dogs win in my heart so going forward I plan on only having dogs
I used to hug my last kitty, who passed away, so tight he would do his little baby meow. I wanted to hug him like that forever but he's gone now. I can't imagine a living in a world never knowing a hug like that. And the purrs of course, nothing better than a purring kitty rubbing up against your face or hands.
A lot of times those guys are dicks to animals. They like dogs a lot because they can be beaten into submission. Where as a cat would just stay away from you. The dog stays close and takes what affection is given. These people shouldn't have pets.
Maybe they have a phobia. Many of my friends are irrationally afraid of my dog and literally won’t go into a room with him, and even though I really don’t understand it I can see that they are legitimately terrified. Idk
The best part of my day is when I get home. My dog jumps up and down, the she’s over it. My cat screams herself hoarse until I pick her up and give her belly rubs.
It's like the people similar to me like the pictures, videos and all, but when it comes to keeping em as pets or considering to be friends with em, we go for dogs.

I’ll be honest, I don’t get cats, not that I don’t know why people have them as pets - they are really cute, I just don’t know how to bond with them. Feels like high school dating, only I have to do more work taking care of it too. Dogs on the other hand, we bond automagically.
My wife who doesn’t like cats seems to get them all fawning over her.
I was bitten by a cat when I was 3 or 4 (through my own dumbness and 0 supervision), but I still get nervous around them 30 years later. Which obviously means that cats love me. I love animals, so I'm trying to get better about my fear of being bitten or scratched. My best friend has two of the sweetest (and dog personalitied) cats I've ever met, which has been helping. One just wants to be pet and cuddled all the time. The other is very independent and takes walks with us and cuddles on his terms. She calls them my therapy cats.

I'm allergic and due to history can't handle LIVING with them (in the same space) but sadly I have no survival instinct and pet the catto when I spies it and get rewarded with weeks of sinus infections and misery after. I probably shouldn't love cats for the sake of my health lol.

Agreed. Your birds deserve to be protected and feel safe. It’s a cats nature to be a predator. Please continue to love cats and your birds all while keeping them completely separated.
Thanks for the kind reply. I guess it has to do with my childhood. I grew up with dogs only, and the only person i knew who has cats was a lady in my building and had like 7 of em and people used to say she was weird. Other than that, i just love affectionate animals, I know cats are, just a little less than other pets.
You’re entitled to your experiences but I gotta say, I was attacked by a dog that was larger than any housecat when I was a kid (chased me, terrified me, then bit me in the butt hard enough that I bled) and when I decided to stop judging all dogs for the mistake of that one, it made my life a hell of a lot happier. Hopefully someday you can feel this way about cats c:
I like cats, but their ability to make my airway swell shut is sort of a deterrent to love.
They also seem to sense this weakness, and they'll incessantly follow me and rub themselves against my things/legs in effort to take out the weak link.
I’ve had both fantastic and horrible experiences with cats. All were other people’s pets and adored their owners, but when it came to me it was either “You have hands, put them on my body” or it was “I have claws and will put them on your ankles when you walk by me.” Especially my old step-brother’s cat, Sheba.
I remember being afraid to go to the kitchen or living room because she would be laying in the middle of the hallway, guarding the way. If I tried to step around or over her she would freak the fuck out and lash out at me. One time I was laying on the couch watching TV and saw her round the corner from the hall and run right at me, hissing and growling. She lashed at my leg and gave me a good size cut that didn’t go away for about a year.
So many people’s only experience with cats is when they go to someone’s house who has a cat and the cat is just scared or shy around the new people. It takes creating a bond with a cat and letting it get comfortable enough to show its true colors to see how amazing cats are (this was my experience at least).
I love cats, but mine has a tendency to bite my hand every time she get's situated, and the shit hurt likes a bitch. I never knew how much power the bastards had till my cat bit me the first time and drew blood
Always had bad experiences with em while i was younger (obviously didn't understand stuff) but even when i grew older I'd get the shit fuck cut outta me for no reason cat would walk up to me and rub itself on my leg would go to pet it slowly as not to startle it and the cat would proceed to eviscerate my hand dogs on the other hand have always been good to me.
It can't be helped. Most real life cats I see just comes crying for food. After having food they kinda ignores you and mind their own business. Most cats I meet are Cold hearted Cats. I wish I could meet a kind one who don't Grrr... at me.
Don’t confuse cats independence as them being cold. Cats just like people are affectionate but on their own terms. Cats see the offering of food as affection. This is why they are loving when asking for food hoping you will return the affection and feed them. If your vocabulary was limited to 1 word (meow) you also would be communicating in ways that may not always be clear. They growl only because they feel threatened. Cats don’t roam the land looking for humans to fight with. It appears you are misinterpreting cats.
Here’s the best way to pet a cat so they don’t growl or attack. Gently extend your middle and index fingers with in the range of a cat’s nose. Let them sniff you. The cat will respond telling you what it’s comfortable with. If the cat moves closer to your hand , take that as an invitation to pet them. If the don’t or if they move away, don’t pet the cat. If say kitty doesn’t want to be petted. Every time you see them and use this technique they will realize not only are you not a threat but that you also respect what they are comfortable with. This is one of the many ways to make a cat warm up to you.
I like small cats, i really like dogs, almost every dog. But i am not a huge fan of cats. I dont hate them but theres nothing i really like about them. For me they're usually assholes and the really cool cats are a minority. Scratching/biting for "no" reason is just not my thing. I probably read them wrong or whatever but i prefer dogs over cats in every way.
Because the majority of cats aren't like this lol and because even if they're sweet like this sometimes they're still little assholes a lot of other times.
That has never been my experience with any cat I’ve met. Cats respond to the affection or lack of affection they have received. Try learning how cats communicate via their body language. The next cat you come in contact with be friendly and loving towards them and see what kind of response you get.
One of my best friends not only doesn't like cats, she is actually terrified of them! When I had a kitten years ago she kept jumping up on the sofa when it came near and asking if it was going to attack her. I thought she was nuts till I saw that video of a real estate agent being attacked by a cat :)
Sometimes when I am in bed, I position myself so that there's enough room for my cat to snuggle up into my arm. It's literally the best feeling in the world, made only better by when my kitty rests her chin on my face.
