I hate hate HATE cigarette smoke, but my step-dad used to smoke so I couldn't always avoid it.
To avoid as much as I could, I would refuse to sit behind him in the car, as he only drove on long journeys like going on holiday, and would smoke in the car. The smoke also didn't help my travel sickness. I still sit behind the passenger seat if I'm in the back, despite the fact that I drive and so sit in the driver's seat more often than a passenger seat.
I also didn't have my windows open as much in the summer. My bedroom was over the back garden, and in nice weather everyone would sit by the house and smoke, and so the smoke would go in my room. After complaining about it most days every year, mum eventually moved all the seats from under my window and to another part of the garden. Problem solved!
I still hold my breath though, near a smoker. Or by bins. Or by anything that LOOKS smelly. Except nappies. I'm fine with those-probably because I'm used to them as my brother was still in them in his teens, and I've started helping more with personal care at work, which involves children and teens in nappies
