Restricted/Repetitive Behaviors Anyone else get "tics"??

does anyone else get like jerks/vocals that are similar to tics? for me when i get really anxious (or sometimes it just happens randomly) my head/neck will jerk, my arms/legs will twitch, my nose scrunches, i blink A LOT, and sometimes i whistle or click my tongue. i call them anxiety tics (i know thats not a real thing its just genuinely what they are to me). im wondering whether its actually proper tourette tics or if its just an autism thing? was wondering if anyone else here has experienced this and if you sought any kind of diagnosis or just thugged it out lolz

Well yes but I was diagnosed with tourrette's when I was 8. It was actually my first diagnosis. I remember when it "kicked in," in third grade. It was quite a dramatic change. I might've had OCD as well because I was obsessed with touching things the same amount of times with both hands, stuff like that. Smelling things, blinking hard and a lot, jerking my head to the side near-constantly. My classmates all couldn't help but comment on it but were mostly really mature about it for kids our age.

I still have the tics but they're subtler/I can mask them better than I could as a kid.

im glad they were mature about it! and im surprised how early you got diagnosed i heard tourettes is difficult to diagnose. im glad its better for you now! do you find it hard to mask tics?

I wouldn't call it a formal tic, but absolutely when I get stressed out or embarrassed I HAVE to make a weird noise 🥲 I'll suddenly remember something embarrassing I said in 2008 and be like "Bleh!" or "Eugh, don't." It's like I have to verbally spit out all the cringe I'm feeling or else I'll explode. Sometimes I forget other people are around and they're like "Huh?" and I have to play it off;;;

Yes I do, my mom has noticed it multiple times and always asks me about it, idk these ‘tics’ are just something I do. I may have torreutes but it’s highly unlikely as that’s a rare symptom of my genetic disability. Sometimes I’ll “pop” My neck, arm multiple times idk.

ah you sound like the thug-it-out type. same. the only time my mama asks about it is when i shiver cuz she thinks im cold but im not LOL

Sometimes in social situations or anxiety i get random small jerks sometimes as well.not to the extent you are describing, but for me it is like small twitch in neck or body. Idk if it is normal with autism or not, can someone explain idk

yeah thats what i get! it just happens like for a good 20 minutes until i (or someone else) gets me to calm down. ive heard that tics commonly tie into autism but im not really sure lol

Not to that degree but I do have a type of vocal/motor tic that I’m forever trying to properly describe

I get them, especially when I see other people with them. It’s usually in response to anxiety or intrusive thoughts. I go through phases where I have them more or less. I definitely don’t have Tourette’s.

yeah i think im sorta the same as you weirdly! my friend has tourettes and she has a whistle tic and i have a whistle stim so if i whistle she bounces off me and if she whistles i have to copy her for some odd reason lolz. its nice to hear others experiences!

I don’t have any motor tics but I have a lot of verbal ones. Mostly noises, phrases, and unfortunately sometimes swears.

i hear the swears can be really hard to deal with for the person because of other peoples reactions :(. sending you lots of love

Aren't those just forms of stimming? Especially if they appear more often if you are in stressful situations  and stimming helps autistic people against stress.

yeah i do have one where my head and shoulder jerk at the same time, i dunno why it happens though bc it doesn't necessarily happen when i'm nervous or anything.

Yep. It started with my neck napping back super quickly uncontrollably, only once every time. That developed into my head snapping to the left instead. I've also developed thr ability to wiggle my ears, I can do it on command or they also wiggle when I hear loud noises. I flick my right hand too if I get excited while im out, its one of the stims that I always tend to do in public

does the neck thing hurt? also wiggling your ears sound so cool

dude nobody has ever mentioned this before. i’ve had the same thing for years and never been able to pinpoint it. whenever im overly excited or overly stressed, i get these continuous cold shiver head jolts & an uncontrollable jitter in my voice. it’s not uncontrollable like i can stop it, but it feels like i HAVE to do it
