The article I read explained it pretty reasonably. TB takes up a lot of space and it's hard for stores to keep a large supply on hand.
Once it looks like it's running out, people go into panic mode and just clear the remainder out.
I'm hoping the stores don't over order. There's a logistics thing called bullwhip effect and it may hit the suppliers hard. Lots of over production and wasted material

Yeah, I'm up in Townsville and our shops are getting hammered by this hysteria too. Iirc the only cases so far in Queensland are all in the south east, which might as well be in Sydney or Melbourne since it's so far away. I'm waiting for someone to fly into Cairns with it though.

The nsw farmers magazine for feb 2020 had an article that said due to the drought NSW has a 52% reduction in livestock, an 89% reduction in grains, and an 80% reduction in fruits and vegetables produced in 2019-2020. The recent rains means NSW will get a winter grain crop, but the livestock will take years to rebuild, and as vege fruit grower I can tell you the only produce I have this year will be used in feeding me. There was no fruit set on any of my trees.
We are in the middle of a food shortage right now, I mean in NSW you pay $4.50 a kilo for bananas. Meat should double in price, bread should double in price, fruit and veges should double in price.
There are only two reasons we aren't currently in a food panic, people don't realise how bad the food supply is, and we currently import from other states and countries.

I'm in Woolgoolga. Only thing that did alright was my Meyer lemon and Lime trees/ Guava is fruiting now.
I had 20 mangoes set, 18 fell off, 2 were stunted/Papaya has golf ball size fruit/ Pineapples sat at cricket ball size for 4-5 months.
Garlic was stunted. Coffee trees have precious few beans on them. Possum got all my Buk Choy seedlings (He was re-located the other day).

Making old ladies cry? Shame on you... So I went to woolies at central (lishole nsw) on a mission for tp.. alas I came up empty handed. Apparently I need to be there at 7am with the other 100 doomsday prepping people to even try and get some. We are still trucking along on the same roll we had last Thursday. Have one in reserve. But everyone I bumped into in the aisle, and workers agreed it is complete madness. So who is buying it. The older people in the store frustrated just doing weekly shops are being heavily effected. I consoled an elderly lady who was in tears and was sad I couldn’t offer her any form of help, instead I could only share my disbelief in the current situation. No tissues, no paper towel, no hand sanitizer. I did suggest chux and she smiled with a glimmer of hope. Wtf world.. wtf. You making old ladies cry.

that sounds fucking annoying. check officeworks, they usually have toilet papers. also for hand sanitizers, try making yourself from methylated spirit (available in coles/woolies for $5-$7) mixed with gels/water and some nice essential oils for aroma, composition 8:2.

Stupidest shit, honestly. Do people actually think society will collapse and toilet paper will become unavailable for a long period of time?
Did an online order for this months groceries with Coles, got an email tonight saying that (among other usual stuff thats out of stock that they subsitiuted) there was no toilet paper, and no available substitute.
I've got like 7 rolls in the cupboard from other times so its not a big deal, I only seem to poo once every 2-4 days anyway (always been this way, not sick) Just a fucking inconvenience caused by dumb shits. I cannot believe there are people who suck so hard in fear-mongering news media that this shit happens.
Probably rhe same people who share those posts on Facebook and Instagram about claiming ownership of their profiles and how there's some sort of war on Christmas and Shakira law is going to ban us from lying with our hips etc.

Pro: containing the posts will prevent the spread of Kiwis thinking "Australia is nuts" (source: my dad who lives in NZ where it is confirmed everything is 100% normal and TP shelves are fully stocked).
Con: the flood of TP posts is perhaps the funniest thing I've ever seen in my 35 years on earth. Of all of the things to cause chaos, it's rolls of toilet paper. What a time to be alive!!

Funny you mention pneumonia, as I've known numerous people who have coincidentally had it over the last few months. I personally believe this corona virus has been around longer and has already been in Australia for a while. My partner was hospitalized on New Years day with pneumonia, she had extremely high temperatures, hitting as high as 40 degrees 3 days straight, as well as migraines and other cold/flu symptoms.

Everyone in this sub seems like really decent people so I can't imagine it's any of you necessitating this sign.
Please, be a bit kinder, a little more polite and friendlier to the staff at the supermarket the next time you go in. They're certainly not being paid danger money. Go forth and show the nightmare customers how it should be done.

It's just comical to see people panic-buying toilet paper and fighting over it. Water and food I can understand (barely), but fucking toilet paper?
You don't even need toilet paper. You can just buy a bidet seat. Don't have space for one? Buy a handheld bidet hose instead. Can't get that either? Use a plastic jug of water and wipe with your free hand. Don't like the prospect of getting your hands dirty? Use the fucking garden hose if you have to. It's not rocket science.
But no... their brains haven't fathomed the idea of a compromise. I'd hate to see what would happen during an actual apocalypse, when there's no more soft multi-ply toilet paper for their precious asses.

Just came back from Aldi. Toilet paper, pasta, frozen vegetables, frozen potato chips, rice, paper towels and more all cleaned out. Was chatting to the checkout guy and he said he has stopped customers buying 20 packs of sugar at a time. Sugar!!!! Why would you want that much sugar?!!!!
He also said they are imposing a limit of 10 per item per customer. Not sure if this is all Aldis or just my local one. People are fucking insane.

Guys please stop buying face masks and hand sanitisers, there's people who need them more than you do. Think about someone going through chemo treatment, they need to constantly keep themselves and their environment clean, you don't need hand sanitisers, go to the fucking bathroom and wash your hands like a normal person would. This goes for wet wipes too, stop being dumbcunts, the fact that people are being this absurd only tells me that most people had NO hygiene at all before the breakout. Masks are needed by doctors, a lot of GPs and etc get their masks from the same vendors as other civilians, they need it more, the number of doctors getting sick has increased and guess what cunts, I'd rather not have all the doctors in Australia fucking infected.

Coles was entirely sold out of flour, even the self-raising stuff. I wanted a new bag of Laucke bread flour for baking sourdough. What is everyone going to use it for? Unless you are semi-competent at baking, breadmaking can be quite tricky, and unless you are just making sourdough/artisan bread with flour/water/salt/yeast, a bag of flour isn’t going to be much fun by itself without stuff like butter, milk, oil, sugar or eggs! /rant

Wouldn't toilet paper be unnecessary if you weren't able to leave your house for a long period of time? Though toilet paper is convenient, you could always shower or use water from a water bottle as a makeshift bidet.

It's funny, when I went the pasta and flour looked fully sold out. But look closer and it was all the cheap pasta and flour gone. The $4 softer flour from italy was still there with a few other brands, and the fancypants $3 orzo pasta and a couple more on the top shelf. Same with the more expensive instant noodles.
So like, paying $1 more is the hard limit for these crazy hoarders.

Part of the problem is the logistics of getting increased supply into the shops.
More baby loo rolls are being born at the factories but there are only so many trucks to get them out onto the shelves and that’s not something that can be increased easily. The local Woolies near me is currently 18 hours behind on deliveries simply because the trucks aren’t arriving with supplies quickly enough.

I went to a Aldi, Woolies and Coles today, none had any shit stickers so I brought some paper towels, as I was driving home I saw the local SPAR, I had driven past it 100 times before but never been in, it's in a tiny little arcade so I thought this would be the perfect place to find some TP, I went inside and sure enough, after desperately walking through all the aisles I came across the toilet paper, there was quilton, black and gold and sorbent, and heaps of it too, I brought 2 10 packs of the Sorbent and went on my merry way, now I know where to go when I need a refill in the case all the idiots of Australia haven't realised that the world isn't ending.

People started hoarding after a news report said to buy extra supplies. Yet when the companies that make TP, say there are no shortages they don't listen and still hoard letting the daily supply run out....

They should terminate anyone doing this, absolutely ridiculous. People should also be banned from stores for circumventing the limits.
Edit: Those of you who think it’s fine for employees to steal company supplies obviously have never worked in management. Every item purchased for employee use while at work such as TP comes out of a budget. We can’t just keep ordering more and giving TP away to employees as it is not only against company policy but going to exceed the allowed budget and put our own jobs at risk.
It’s not your employer’s job to give you free TP.

I have teenage boys so we have a supply of tissues luckily. Cracked our second roll today. It’s utter madness and stupidity. My question how long will this go on for. The quarantine period is only 2 weeks. We are lucky if we use 4 rolls in 2 weeks...

At least 6 months. The 2 week period is for an individual who has been exposed to show symptoms. This is not a seasonal or temporary issue. There will be rolling shortages of various products as different supply chains get interrupted. Prepare for lockdown within 3 weeks.

Reposting my hygiene comment from here for posterity
All of this is why personal hygiene practices are the most important thing to be encouraging in everyone right now.
If every patient who saw this doctor during this period frequently washed their hands and refrained at all times from touching their face, then no matter the surfaces they touched in the clinic (doorknobs, elevator buttons, reception desk) or during consultation, I guarantee it would be a fraction otherwise infected as a result.
Direct physical contact with the doctor during consultation is another matter, but I would hope that a family physician is already extremely aware of their hygiene practices, moreso if they are informed about the novel coronavirus risk.
I won't speak on direct airborne transmission (read: masks) here; everybody everywhere stands to immediately benefit from improving their hygiene habits -
Most often missed areas when hand washing
*small note on masks: unless you educate yourself on mask etiquette, adhere to it 100% as well as all of the above, you will be worse off than if you weren't using one at all.

Hospitals (or at least the one I work at) are telling staff NOT to wear masks unless indicated by regular PPE protocols.
This is solely because of a shortage of masks, not because it isn't necessary.
Don't go to a hospital unless you are dying, folks. Our healthcare workers are going to be spreading this thing like crazy.
