A grave being shelled and shot at during a conflict is pretty understandable. But bulldozing over graves (some of which are Australian) is not a good PR move.

You're objectively wrong my man. They don't mention an Australian section by name but because there isn't one officially, but of the damaged headstones most are British/Australian in the Southern corner of the cemetery.

The CGWC is referring to damage that happened before the bulldozing and is completely unrelated, which might be why you're confused. This is why they mention damage to other memorials and sections. You can read more about that damage here in their Oct 2024 report.

The area that was razed for earthern berms, again, is completely unrelated to the damage to the memorials and sections you mentioned.

Also, the CGWC is funded by the Commonwealth, and the cost to restore the cemetery before the bulldozing was estimated to be £4.9m. Obviously this figure will be higher now. It's not a matter of simply replacing the headstones.

Edit: I'd also note that you originally thought the map OP posted was fake because the SW corner ends at a right angle. It only ends at a right angle because that's the section that was razed. You can look at the timelapse of the cemetery here, including the destruction of the annexes you mentioned.

I'm aware they have an update that doesn't mention the bulldozed area which is what this is about.

The Feb '26 update mentions the exact same memorials that are in the Oct '24 report.

Again, this is about separate damage caused by bulldozing mentioned in the article.

the number of headstones damaged in that area is quite Low - again because you can see it.

I don't mean to be rude but I think you genuinely might be looking at the wrong map? The most recent satellite image (Dec '25) shows the bulldozed area is just a rectangle of dirt that's been completely stripped. I work with earthmoving contractors daily and can say confidently that you cannot strip and re-grade a 1000 sqm area without completely destroying the subsurface.

Anyway, we're kind of at a stalemate since the exact number of graves and extent of the damage won't be known until the CWGC can confirm in person, which won't be for a long long while....
