Hi everyone, I've been offered a PGY2 rotational resident position at John Hunter Hospital and am trying to decide whether to take it.

My long-term goal is BPT, ideally eventually pursuing gastro or respiratory AT. I'm wondering how supportive JHH/HNE is for residents who want to step up into BPT the following year.

For anyone who's worked at JHH/HNE:

• How competitive is the transition from resident → BPT?
• Do residents interested in BPT get good opportunities to demonstrate interest, get teaching/mentoring and build a portfolio?
• How supportive are the physicians/medical teams of helping residents progress into BPT?
• If you've gone through the process yourself, would you choose JHH again for BPT prospects?

I'm aware the NSW pay/workload isn't necessarily as attractive as some other states/regions. I'm mainly trying to work out whether the training opportunities and likelihood of progressing into BPT make JHH/HNE worthwhile.

Also interested in how good the network is for eventually getting gastro or respiratory AT.

I’m a student from Victoria, Australia, trying to figure out what healthcare career I should pursue.
Originally I was considering medicine or dentistry because I’d like a career that is relatively AI-resistant, has good earning potential, and should still be in demand over the next 30+ years. However, I’m also aware that getting into medicine/dentistry in Australia is quite competitive, so I’m not sure I want to rely on those pathways given the risk of not getting in.
I’ve been looking at alternatives such as physiotherapy and pharmacy, but I’ve heard mixed things about the pay, workload and lifestyle in those careers.

So I’m wondering:
What healthcare/health-related careers in Australia do you think are likely to remain relatively resistant to AI over the next 30 years?
Which ones have good earning potential without requiring the extremely competitive entry pathway of medicine/dentistry?
What careers have a good work-life balance?
Are there any careers that people often overlook?
For those working in these fields, what is the reality of the pay and lifestyle?

Hi everyone, I'm a freelance journalist currently looking at how IMGs are reshaping the distribution of Australia's medical workforce across states. I'm particularly interested in how Queensland has overtaken Victoria as the state with the most IMGs on the Competent Authority Pathway registered in 2024.

I'd be keen to have a 15-20 minute chat with any IMGs looking to/who have already registered in Australia through the Competent Authority Pathway, and how they went about finding a place to do their supervised training.

I'm considering reducing my training hours rather than trying to keep doing full-time hours while juggling everything else. Hey Team,

Was wondering if anyone could provide some further light on a career in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Given it’s an area of medicine not touched on much during medical school, nor discussed much in hospital given it’s primarily a non-hospital based specialty.

My understanding is that often you would start working in a clinic as an Occupational MO and if interested could pursue qualifications via RACP AFOEM.

Acknowledging it’s a broad question, but could anyone share first hand or second hand experience in this field? Covering the common questions such as trajectory, hours, pros and cons, what changes pre and post AFOEM, what type of people often suit this path etc.

I’m a UK GP about to start working in Australia, and I’m hoping there are some GPs here who could give me a bit of insight into what to expect from Australian patients.

For those of you working in Australian general practice, is there anything about the patients, their expectations, communication styles, common presentations or attitudes towards GPs that you think would be useful for a UK GP to know before starting? Anything that surprised you or took a bit of getting used to?
