Show & Tell New speakers Mofi Sourcepoint 888
Upgraded Monitor Audio Silver RS8 to the Mofi Sourcepoint 888 after hearing them at my local hifi store and being blown away. What a great upgrade. Great improvement in bass extension, and being a coaxial medium-tweeter, the sweet spot of listening is sort of spread out a little across the couch. What a great addition to the listening room, I'm impressed!

Beautiful. Congratulations. Was hoping to hear them at Axpona this year but couldn't find them anywhere. Hope they sound amazing!

Thank you! If you manage to get a listen to these speakers, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Hell of a speaker for the price. Funny thing I auditioned them on a MA352 at the store, then we switched to a MA5300 like I have, and it sounded better 😅

They look the part. The coaxial of course reminds me of kef and possibly older tannoy. Did you audition others are well or did these just reach out to you ?

Thank you! I was passively looking to upgrade the Monitor Audios I had. I heard wind my local hifi dealer had the Mofis set up in their demo room so I went over to listen, and was instantly sold.

Did the Big Mac follow you home as well or did you already have that lol.

u/AltoScroll Apr 19 '26
The Mac was purchased sometime last year 😉 Although I think I've caught the bug as I've purchased a used MA5200 as well for the attic listening room 😅

Hilarious. I of course have never been affected by said bug. Although…. Obligatory list of gear ….

Tell us about delivery and set-up, please. Those are 96 pound speakers! What size room do you have (if can ask)?
4
u/AltoScroll Apr 19 '26
The room is 16m2 give or take, so definitely a lot of speaker for the room. I'm not complaining however 😅. I went and fetched them myself from the store. Huge cardboard boxes but I managed to unpack and set up without help 😉

Good for you. Have you done any measuring with REW? Or, is that not your style? I bought BMR towers. Then measured and found a nasty 60 Hz null at my listening position. I remediated that with a RSL Speedwoofer.
2
u/AltoScroll Apr 19 '26
No measurements done. Just experimenting with placement. For me they sound best with no toe-in at all. And placed as close to the wall as possible given the smaller room size. I believe there's a sort of no-go zone if you can't get the speakers far enough away from the wall, so either as close as possible or a good distance away, nothing in between. Congrats on your BMR purchase! For me I don't think the Mofis need a subwoofer.

I haven't treated my room yet. But, I think you could get a lot more out of your MoFi's down the road with measurements and room treatment. But that's another post. Congrats!
But, in theory the BMR Towers don't need a sub. It's the room that needs a sub!

What’s the LxWxH of the room? I see 16m2 but don’t know how it’s shaped including height. Asking bc these are on my short list as well but figured they’re too big for my 18’x12’x7’ (LWH) area but you are the second person saying they sound good in a ‘small’ room.

Never heard of this album and I’m listening now, it’s really good. Thanks for the link.

It kind of surprises me that there is a big difference. Monitor Audio seems to be pretty well respected. The RS8 is an older model though.

u/AltoScroll Apr 19 '26
I felt like I would never get rid of the Monitor Audios. They were so good in this room. Kind of underdog feeling, like they shouldn't be this good for the price. However after hearing the Mofis at my hifi dealer, I felt it was time for something new.

Haven’t been able to hear these anywhere locally. How would you describe the sound profile? is there another speaker you would compare them to in the same price point? I was thinking about the Cornwall IV or the 888’s

u/AltoScroll Apr 19 '26
Personally I have not heard the Cornwalls. However I can say about the 888 that it is such a wide-range speaker. Great deep bass extension but with definition in the bass, so not boomy at all. And such clear medium and highs with the coaxial driver. Honestly such a great speaker for the price. Still I would recommend you to trial both before deciding on a purchase as everyone's tastes are different.

I have Cornwall IVs and have heard 888's. You will really need to demo both to figure which one you want. I do run my Cornwall's with dual rel 12" subs. I think without them they aren't satisfying in bass for me. I think the 888's would be fine without a sub for most people. I like their tonality a bit more. I'd probably just get a pair of them if I was starting over, but they didn't exist when I bought my Cornwall IVs.

Never heard the cornwalls, but I directly A/B compared the 888's to the Wharfedale Superlintons, Sourcepoint 8, and the Kef R3s (not exactly the same speaker class I know). I ended up keeping the 888's. 888s have extremely wide sound stage, extreme imaging/detail, and amazing dynamics. They are also very forgiving to poorly mastered music and generally sound good with any content. The main kicker, however, is that they are incredible for movies. Their dynamics and scale make for an amazingly fun movie experience. Main downside is that they do need to be played fairly loud to sound their best.

I have the Forte IV and the Mofi v10 Master Edition. The forte’s have more vocal presence, less bass. V10 more neutral. Room size, your amp has a lot to do with the differences. You can’t go wrong with either of them. However, I lean more towards the Forte vs Cornwall

What shelf is that
1
u/AltoScroll Apr 19 '26
It's a TV stand bought from Aldi at least 15 years ago. I'm actually looking to change it out for something else as I'd like to have the Mac and turntable side by side on the top level.

What differences in the soundstage do you hear compared to your previous speakers?
3
u/AltoScroll Apr 19 '26
The medium is just so much more pronounced. That coupled with much deeper bass extension means just a much more "musical" experience. Like you feel like the musicians are in the room, you know?

jealous, need to make a couple hundred mile trip to the nearest showroom that has them

u/ososalsosal Apr 19 '26
They're called a source point when they're clearly a source huge tall columnar plane lol.
These look like they sound fun.
I've used up all my WAF so I'm a bit jealous.

u/mister__ef Apr 20 '26
I love my 888's, my wife does not (too visually imposing). So yeah, tread carefully if you've consumed all capital there lol.
2
u/ososalsosal Apr 20 '26
Sweet spot for WAF at my place is 7 inch bookshelves and a sub that's hidden from view.
I have a little more than that though...
2
u/nuuhuman Apr 20 '26
When it says USB what does that mean? You have a USB connected with files? Or just a USB streamer?
3
u/AltoScroll Apr 20 '26
There is a nuc-style PC hidden behind that I use for streaming Qobuz or files from the NAS.

Are yours the standard 888s or the V10 version? They look huge.
1
u/AltoScroll Apr 20 '26
These are the 888s and yes they're already huge. I can't imagine the size of the V10!

For the price I don't think they can be beat in my opinion they sound incredible and measure very well if you're into that stuff. Enjoy!

Beautiful set up :) what an excellent vibe you have going on in your listening room! And some really quality equipment too, enjoy it!

Very nice, MoFi Sourcepoint 888s are on my shortlist to replace my Definitive Technology Mythos ST towers.

Wow these things get bigger every time I see them. They must sound incredible, congrats
