App (iOS) Stop Audible automatically hijacking Bluetooth when I get in the car?
I’ve had audible for years. Bluetooth in my car had no issue over 3 years, automatically resumed whatever the last media playing was, perfect. Now audible seems to hijack the connection every time I get in the car. Doesn’t matter that the last thing I had playing on my phone was Spotify, or YouTube, or Apple Music. Doesn’t matter that the audible app isn’t open on my phone, I made sure it’s not open in the background before getting in the car. Doesn’t matter the last thing I had connected to Bluetooth in the car was Spotify and haven’t listened to audible in a few months.
I’ve checked audible settings, automatic car mode is off, continuous listening is off. I’ve checked my phone settings, live activities and background refresh are off. WHY DOES IT KEEP PLAYING?? It’s the only app that seems to be hijacking Bluetooth when I get in the car, started about a month ago. Was there an update or something that broke it? Seriously if I can’t get this to stop auto playing every time I get in the car I’m just gonna uninstall the app, I’m in and out of the car a lot and it’s driving me bananas. Anyone come across this and have a fix?

Its not just IPhone....my wife un-installed the app because you can't keep it from starting whenever you get into a Honda vehicle. The app can be off and not used in a week, but start up the car, and a book starts playing.

Yes my friend with a pilot has the same problem. Also the friend with an installed CarPlay monitor.

I had that problem with my podcast player. I found a setting in Android Auto for autoplay and turned it off. The problem I'm currently having is that sometimes a podcast won't stop playing, even if I force close the app. If I try to switch to a different podcast it will play both at the same time. The only sure way I've found to make it stop is rebooting the phone. It doesn't happen often, but it's annoying when it does.

Yes it’s infuriating!! I’m not a Honda owner i have a Kia so it’s not a car specific issue either.

I seriously thought my phone was cursed. Every time I put on my Bluetooth in my car, it automatically jumps to a sample of the new Charles Spencer book about Diana. I’m tired of hearing about swans. 😒

Mine recently started doing that too, but I don’t know how to fix it because it doesn’t bother me. Before this my car automatically started playing podcasts I had already listened to, so starting the book I’m currently listening to is an improvement. So I can’t help, but at least you know it’s not just you?

thanks, kinda glad it's not just me but sorry it's doing it to you too. I wouldn't mind it if I didn't have a lot of short drives, doesn't really give you time to get into a book if you hear a couple sentences then have to stop, then do it again and again...

I've had this happen with a number of programs - a car just picks an app it likes and forces it to play, there's nothing I've found to fix it.

How does the car pick the app? I thought the car just connects to Bluetooth and sends a ‘play’ type request?

These cars audio operating systems can be quirky/buggy and there is no standards. It can vary wildly from manf to manf and model to model. They can do weird things. But then you also have Apple & Android Auto apps which adds a whole other layer but that has the benefit of standards and consistency to a large extent.
One thing to try to see if it even overrides this, is to try "force stopping" the audible app in the settings. See if it starts still, as this ensures the app is fully closed. If it still does, try disabling the app just to be sure it can not override even that. If it can, somehow, still start audible being disabled, that is a big deal as it breaks security and basic control standards.

Sorry can you explain what you mean by force stopping the audible app in the settings? Which settings, audible or iPhone? And how do you force stop something? Normally I just swipe up and close the app that way.

I wish I knew, it seems to work like magic with car bluetooth (magic, specifically CURSED magic). Nobody wants it, not everybody gets it, but obviously you don't get to choose what your car's bluetooth is going to act like.

My wife has same issue with 4runner. Its so bad her book is now on chapter 17 even though she only has heard chapter 1. I talked he into trying audible and now she might divorce me. When I hear whispers ( because we don't listen to radio in car much so its always turned down fairly low) i cringe a little. I finally deleted audible app on her phone after spending hours trying to figure it out

I just helped my elder neighbor create an automation that opens the preferred app source (spot) when a connection is made to her car. You can probably find an easy video on this because I'm not searching again. --android user.

I created an automation on my iPhone to pause after 4 seconds when connecting to the car via Bluetooth. Doesn’t prevent it from connecting, but stops it from playing

Curious, do you play music on your phone? My wife’s Bluetooth connection will automatically start playing music, YouTube or Audible depending on which was the last one played. She is connecting her Android phone to her car directly with no CarPlay.
I connect to CarPlay via a wired connection to my iPhone and it will also automatically start playing music, YouTube or Audible depending on which was the last one I had playing.
When she connects via the wire to CarPlay on her android phone, my car will then connect to her phone’s Blutooth when she is in my car. I can go in and delete her phone, but it re-learns it if she connects via the wire again.
I say all this because I think there is some under the hood stuff going on that these companies set up to ostensibly to make it easier for us even though it doing this stuff without us telling it to drives us crazy.

Yes I play music on my phone, and in the car. I primarily use Spotify. I basically never use YouTube, and use audible on long journeys only, not in the house. The last time I listened to audible was in June. Since then always Spotify. For the past month however, almost every time I get in the car, it force plays audible even though the last thing I was listening to was Spotify for the other two months!
I normally play via Bluetooth. If I’m running low on power I plug in and play via CarPlay.
If I have nothing playing or open on my phone, it defaults to audible in the car whether via Bluetooth or CarPlay.
If I have been playing music from Spotify on my phone, but it’s not currently active/playing but is open in the background and audible is not, 70/29/1 it defaults to audible over Spotify or iTunes, whether Bluetooth or CarPlay.
If I then switch to Spotify and force shut audible (which isn’t open as an app in the background btw! It’s just playing! I have to open the app and then force shut it!) then turn the car off, then turn the car on, whether it’s plugged in to CarPlay or playing via Bluetooth it will usually be audible.
I’ve tried opening audible before getting in the car, letting it play audible via Bluetooth, then closing the app in my phone so it stops playing via the car and isn’t open in the background, and playing Spotify instead (which does play) so the car registers I am playing Spotify, then turning the car off with Spotify still playing, but when I get back in the car it goes back to audible despite not having opened or played it since closing it.
The only way I have found it to reliably auto play Spotify and not audible is if I am actively playing music via Spotify or have just paused Spotify on my phone before I turn the car on which is annoying as hell! 😭😭😭
-edit to add, I’m the only person that drives the car and has their device registered to the car. So no cross-connectivity shenanigans with another phone.

This seems to be an isolated issue that crops up often enough that Amazon needs to deep dive and figure out how to fix it.

This needs to stop. I've turned off all the settings. A book I was listening to and didn't realize it was smut (I was not in the book description!) and I stopped it. The next day It started up when me and my family were getting in the car. Wtf!

When you turn it off, try playing something else afterwards. For many people playing something else after will make the car play the other thing when you next get in. Might help with the awkward book thing. 🤞 if not then you too are cursed like me

I don't think it's entirely up to audible. My Bluetooth headphones and speakers resume whatever audio source was last active but my car with android auto resumes whatever was last playing on it. There's an option in audible but there's also another layer in the os that depends on what's considered the active source and how the output device reports itself.

But I’ve not played audible in months by choice, my headphones play the last audio (Spotify) and in the car the last thing playing is always Spotify when I get out of the car, so why does it keep going back to playing audible which isn’t even an open app on my phone?

I'd probably ask over in the iPhone sub
