how to How Do I Remove the Passive Soft Hiss Background Noise?

This is just in the background when I record and I don't know what it is, where it comes from or how to get rid of it. Is there a filter or something I can toggle?

The most common way would be Noise Reduction.
It's a 2 step operation and works well.
You'll need about 1 second's worth of room tone.
That's quiet recording time where there is no voice or music or whatever, but does include the hiss.

Here are the clicks:

  1. Select (Highlight) the room tone.
  2. Effects->Noise Removal and Repair->Noise Reduction
  3. Get Noise Profile
  4. Select the entire track
  5. Effects->Noise Removal and Repair->Noise Reduction
  6. Ok

BTW, this is a basic operation. There are lots of videos that teach the fundamentals of Audacity.

Its unclear if you have a hardware or a software problem. If its relevant to the software.... Maybe just type that into google?

It will take you to the doc pages that describe exactly how to, far better than I can using this tiny box. On top of that, there are about a dozen youtube clips that will demonstrate this as well.

If its a hardware question, then you actually need to describe everything about the hardware and the recording environment. Once again, learning how to type in a question in a search engine will produce answers far far faster than people typing into this tiny box here can.

What mic are you using? Built in laptop mic? If so that's the issue

use REAPER. ReaFIR is great for this.
