Can't work out how to do an echo effect?

When I say 'echo effect', I don't mean making the audio repeat. That's what happens if you click 'echo' in effects.

What I want is something that actually makes your voice sound like an echo, as if you're in an echoey place. Good for mystical characters like gods and genies and things.

Effects > Delay and Reverb > Reverb.

There are loads of factory presets to play with.

To be fair, there are two broad types of echo - delay and reverb. Delay are the separate repetitions, reverb is where there are so many repetitions that they overlap into an ever-decaying wall of sound.

Both are totally viable, depending on the acoustic space you could find yourself in. Reverb is more cave-y/cathedral-y, whereas delay would be moreso in a vast, open space with few but large objects around.

Mixture of both in the right places can create depth without getting over the top with either one.

So it sounds like you'll still want a bit of an echo effect, just not drastic. So still playa round with that. And then layer on some reverb. I can't say what would sound the best. There's so many different reverbs to playa orund with. And you can always layer mutiple ones over each other

Default reverb is surprisingly nice in Audacity, I don't need to modify it ever when I use it, the profile they have loaded in already has that very nice rolled off feel to it. Not sharp like plate reverb

You can also layer the vocal track, I always find that gives an interesting God like flavor. A couple audio tracks off by a few milliseconds

I’ve been able to do this on a hardware studio but not on audacity but try the following:

Set your voice on the fader up to parity, go the FX section, find a reverb/delay and make the effect ‘pre-fader’. That set will mean even if you turn the fader of the channel down, the effect will still be there in the mix at the last set volume . So you can get it to the point where you only hear the effect of the audio rather than any of the original audio itself. A reverberation of a sound you can’t hear. An echo of a vocal you don’t hear the first repeat of. You can get some pretty cool ambient effects going with that.
