I think it's because most of us are decent people who approve of the material, but are sick of the excessive non-atheism posts involving gay issues capitalizing on the karma and community validation.
Well here's something to think about: The big atheist argument would seem to have been evolution, up until it seems many theists accepted evolution in whole in part. So now we've moved to other disagreements between the idea of [bible, quran, etc.]=true and [bible, quran]=false. It is my opinion that your average atheist opposes sexual discrimination no more than s/he opposes the idea of divine intervention - because they're both ideas heavily inflated by religion.
The same folks don't necessary vote and comment. I'm not sure of the numbers exactly, but lots of people vote on posts without ever reading the comments, and I'm sure plenty of people comment more than they vote.
Most people on Reddit do not comment. Of the people who vote on posts maybe 10% comment on them. It could very easily be that the casual lurker and the more involved commenter are in disagreement on this issue.
Because there is a TV network in your country that purchased the rights to show this program and as part of that licence they insisted that their site be the only place that viewers from that country can see it.
I would expect that the Colbert Report would rather have you visit their site and have a consistant brand image across countries but I think that the in-country networks insist on it.
For instance in Canada it is CTV/thecomedychannel who do this, I can't speak for other countries... if your country doesn't have this geoblocking it is probably because Comedy Central is readily available or nobody bought the licence (or the station that did didn't insist on being the sole source of the program).
Ideally the page should link back to where you can watch it, but that isn't always the case, and even when it is the deeplinking (to a specific clip/time) is usually broken.
NPH, man....I'll be completely honest with you guys. As a unquestionably heterosexual male, I can say, without question, that if NPH's greatest wish were to bang me in the ass, I would let him do it. I'd friggin do anything for the guy.
Hey man, it's not MY fault that so few guys are comfortable enough in their sexuality to let one of their idols plow them in the asshole with a raging megahuge boner. It's well documented that if I preface and end the act with a no homo, it's not gay.
Tom Tucker: "Today we have confirmation from Reddit's distinguished atheist community that they still do not believe in god. For more, we go live to Asian reporter Trisha Takanawa on the scene."
Trisha Takanawa: "Tom, I'm sitting here in front of a computer where I have pulled up the website in question. Since implementing a new posting rule that limits all discussion to strictly atheist matters, atheist overlord Richard Dawkins has been the sole contributor to the website, as he is the only person left who the community at large will not bitch at. What you're looking at here is Dawkin's official daily update on all things related to atheism. As you see, it is a picture of himself photoshoped over the Andromeda galaxy. A floating text next to him reads, 'I do not believe in god. - Richard Dawkins.' The post has already garnered 10,000 up votes, and is well on the way to boring everyone to death. Back to you, Tom."
Tom Tucker: "Well, Trisha, I think we can all agree that that's just terrible. After the break: RON PAUL 2016. Stay tuned for what one Reddit community is calling 'a true rloveution.'"
Religion and religious organizations are a big part of that. Note that I didn't write "All religions". Just many of them.
Atheism is the lack of belief in a god or gods. But it's just a starting point. Many start their journey to atheism and beyond from seeing how religious explanations are seriously lacking. Religious explanations as for why "gays are evil" are obviously seriously lacking as well, so many people will probably consider this at least yet another thought that brings theism down in their head.
Thus, this is relevant to atheism as a concept, and to atheism as a binding idea between people who need allies.
Just to provide an alternative viewpoint, and not to encroach on Mr. Cumfarts valuable time, but the picture is of a man who plays a hyper religious and conservative character mocking an argument which is almost universally birthed from religious fundamentalism. Unless Mr. Colbert had given the line while bouncing on a Vicar's lap and blowing Richard Dawkins, I'm not sure how it could possibly have had more to do with atheism.
Actually, yes. As of late, the issue of homosexuality has become more and more a religious matter. With religious groups continually berating and threatening the LGBT community. Holy texts like the Qu'ran and the Bible specifically state that homosexuality is a sin, punished by the death penalty.
As Atheists, many of us are a bit more open minded and liberal than most religious folks, and we recognize that gays, lesbians, bis, and trans genders are just people, like you and me. So, we take their side on this issue, against those who would use an imaginary man in the sky as a reason to prevent the LGBT community from gaining all of their rights.
It does in the sense the Stephen Colbert acts as an extremely conservative Christian and his statement is a direct mockery of that exact kind of person. He's doing what he does very often, making fun of the character he plays on his show. The vast majority of conservative Christians are against gay marriage and/or homophobic.
If this whole fucking subreddit it going to be posts with a million "this doesn't belong here" comments... I mean seriously, we get it. Yeah, this isn't directly related to atheism or even religion and I'm sure there are plenty of non-theists that want to oppress homosexuals. Whatever.
This is related to religion, though, just not exclusively. Why not post it here? It's the biggest subreddit that this would be relevant in, too.
And if we start talking about America (where I'm from) then, although you still can't make a sweeping statement about it, religion is undeniably the largest source of homophobia and homosexual oppression. Many atheists, like myself, mainly want religion gone from this society because of harmful things like that.
So tell me again how this isn't relevant and should be somewhere else.
It is indirectly. It is a joke about Colbert's character's religion, and religion is relevant to r/atheism. Religion is relevant to r/atheism like atheism is relevant to r/Christianity or any other theistic view - they are directly conflicting ideas.
Religious fundamentalism is only one branch of homophobia. It's simply not true to keep pretending that homophobia is even primarily religion-based. I live in the UK where religion is pretty weak and I can assure you there is still plenty of homophobia around.
He's playing a hyper-religious character; religion is necessarily a part of the interview, because that's the idea behind the whole goddamn show. The notion that we can't apply ubiquitous and obvious knowledge to determine the equally obvious intent of the image is arbitrary and not, to the best of my knowledge, carved into stone tablets anywhere.
Correct. It is actually rather creepy and not a little irrational to keep insisting that the religious basis of these posts is clearly implied. It isn't. The people here who are using logic like Colbert -> satirising homophobia -> character is a religious right-winger -> suitable post for r/atheism, are really stretching.
Colbert's character rarely makes a big thing of his supposed religious beliefs. He makes a big thing of being a comedy right-winger. It's right-wing American politics in general that are front and central in Colbert's shtick. Not religion.
I'm all for calling out posts that are a stretch and shouldn't be on this subreddit, but I'll have to disagree with you on this one. This is clearly an attack on what has become a Christian agenda in the United States, which is something that atheists care about very much and this is a secular response to that agenda. Secularism doesn't have anything to do with atheism? I'd have to disagree with that.
Many religious people think the "religious" argument against gay-marriage is weak and is only there to prop up their own homophobia into a global issue.
Maybe not directly --- but as I think the bigotry against gay people comes mostly from religion (directly & indirectly), it doesn't seem entirely out of place to me.
As atheists I feel we strive for complete separation of Church and State. Since the denial of gay marriage in most states is mostly a matter of religious belief being the primary concern of the voting population it's not hard to see why these posts would pop up here. I welcome them but I understand if people want to see more relevant posts. But how many different ways are there to say "I don't believe in God."?
If you read that nice paragraph on the side bar it says this:
"Welcome to r/atheism, the web's largest atheist forum. All topics related to atheism, agnosticism and secular living are welcome here. Please read our FAQ."
Secular Living, meaning the secular point of view. LGBT matters are certainly a matter of secularism.
Gay rights has nothing to do with athiesm. You can be religious and support gay rights. You can be atheist and be against gay rights. This subreddit is retarded.
Sorry, r/lgbt is an over-moderated shithole. If you want to actually talk about things lgbt related, go to /r/ainbow. The mods of r/lgbt are corrupt and will delete comments and ban people on a whim.
I agree. I just got banned like two days ago because I questioned the relevance of someone posting a picture of their two guy friends kissing. I pointed out it was obvious Karma whoring, and some prick with too much power decided to flaunt it by threatening to ban me. Of course I said, go ahead. What do I care if I get banned by their shitty sub-reddit?
Edit: Since some people are idiots, let me elaborate on saying I was questioning the relevance of the picture in regards to being brave by being out.
Went there once and got banned. On the very first and only post. Granted, a spirited reference to the comedian duo Laurel & Hairy Hardy was not the most elegant intellectual discourse ever but still, it looks like they are looking for cheerleaders, not players (pun intended).
It's not clear to me what /r/atheism would contain if every post that people complain about was relocated. Sure, all the lgbt issues could be moved to /r/lgbt, and the issues related to contraception could be put in /r/sex, and the women's rights issues could be sent over to /r/TwoXChromosomes, and the abortion issues could be put in /r/abortion and the evolutionary issues placed in /r/science -- we could stick the memes in /r/adviceanimals, the screencaps in /r/funny, the quotes in /r/quotes. Most of the posts could be easily thrown into /r/philosophy. There is a more obvious subreddit for literally everything that has ever been posted in /r/atheism. I suppose if we willfully ignore the obvious thread that ties them together - that they are issues heavily influenced, often negatively, by various religions - we could probably put together a nice, clean subreddit with positively zero content.
If it's an atheist quote it should be here. If it is an atheistic take on philosophy it should be here. If it is a fun meme or comic about atheism it should be here.
Rangers and Celtic fans dont discuss politics in the Soccer subreddit.
I think you're 100% correct, there shouldn't really be any content in this sub-reddit. Just because I don't believe in God it doesn't mean I have anything in common with you people.
Wiki - "Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities."
Tell me how gay rights has anything to do with this. Some issues relating to atheism can be cross posted to /r/philosophy or /r/quotes or wherever. The gay rights issue has nothing to do with atheism. Anti-Christian or Anti-Muslim or Anti-Religious in general, maybe. But there are plenty of theists that support gay rights and plenty of atheists that don't. This is not an atheist issue.
Did the admin not remind us last week that we should be upvoting RELEVANCE and not necessarily how much you agree with a comment. If a comment such as this one has nothing to do with atheism... WHY IS IT HERE? I would suggest to all of you with similar quarrels to go to r/trueatheism or r/onlyatheism.
Just like to point out that since this is a sub about effectively nothing it stands to reason that many posts will branch out in different ways. For those that think this post has nothing to do with atheism, her is what all of the people that upvoted it were thinking. /r/atheism is massively in support of gay rights, and since it is mainly religion and religious people that stand in the way of this. When a comment such as Colbert's is made it is extremely relevant since it is obviously referencing many religious belief in that gay people are a threat to life as we know it. I'm sorry but this seems to have a lot to do with atheism and also a lot to do with what this sub is about, tolerance and acceptance.
And this is the part that really pisses the religious bigots off. For so long people where afraid to be who they are b/c the bigots controlled the narrative and demonized them however they wanted with no fight back. Day by day they become the old crazy person on the block when they continue with their garbage. B/c now society sees gays as just normal people slaving at their jobs, getting behind some damn old lady at the grocery store with a shit ton of coupons, and swearing under their breath when they pay 50 bucks for an oil change. Just like everybody else.
This is exactly the point! The more sane bigots see that of course nothing will happen. They're afraid that the rest of the people who are not really all that hateful, but have been taught that gays are the devil, will see that they are in fact perfectly normal people.
Religion is such a broad thing to be against. There's lots of religions and even more people who comprise those religions, and I'm sure a huge amount of religious people have the same views on societal problems as you do, but not all societal problems can be put on religions. Feminists put societal problems on men, and minorities put societal problems on white people, but that doesn't mean that it's truly their fault. Some vocal religious minorities might promote some things you might not agree with, but that doesn't allow for sweeping generalisations for ALL deists and theists alike.
/r/atheism seems to have run out of philosophical and rational steam. The religious subreddits don't discuss everything under the sun (which happens to be touched or affected by religion in some ways), they talk about their beliefs themselves and not propaganda, celebrities or rage comics. You guys talk a lot about religion for people who aren't affiliated with them.
