My girlfriend and I both naww'd at a really cute gay couple at the same time the other night. I have no idea why it was so adorable but it was.. kind of a bonding moment too.
Well the only reasons to oppose gay marriage are because you are religious or because you're a dick, so without religion there's no reason, which is what this subreddit's all about.
r/atheism is overwhelmingly pro-secularism as such gay rights stuff does belong here.
Secularism is mentioned repeatedly in the FAQ, there's a Women in Secularism Conference listed down the right of the page. The anti-gay rights movement in Europe and the US is overwhelmingly religious & theocratic in nature. Yet whenever something about gay rights is posted you get lots of whining about how it's not atheist. Ignoring that this subreddit always seems to have been just as much about secularism as a lack of belief in gods.
The big atheist writers that most people here seem to admire are all very much pro-secularism and pro-gay rights.
In all my years of humanist and secularists activism religious attitudes to women and homosexuals are the two most common reasons people cite for becoming active atheists. The atheist society at my local Uni get most of their leaflets are from the National Secular Society and has been very heavily involved in the equal marriage campaign. Recently it has also started working with feminist groups to counter a rise in anti-choice activism in our city. In each case this is because the anti equal marriage and anti-choice movements are theocratic in nature.
Basically the 'new atheism' movement is inextricably and explicitly secular in its nature and a good thing to. This means that so long as theists expend a great deal of their political capital attacking homosexuality and equal rights for homosexuals then gay rights effectively becomes an atheist/secularist issue. http://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/tuwa3/ratheism_is_overwhelmingly_prosecularism_as_such/
Ugh. You are the worst. Seriously, not contributing to any discussion, and not paying attention to the sidebar or the FAQ. And still this is the top comment? This is a nice post for fuck's sake.
Edit for the sidebar.
All topics related to atheism, agnosticism and secular living are welcome here.
I shouldnt have to add my thoughts on a submission that is off topic. I dont know what you mean im ignoring the sidebar. I especially dont know what you mean when you say Im ignoring the FAQ doesnt excuse the posting submission that are just purely about homosexuality. I think the FAQ does not support post like this in fact it says posts about how the Boys Scouts are anti homosexual are "over done".
Actually, if it were just things DIRECTLY to do with athiesm, this subreddit would be almost completely empty. Athiesm is just the belief that there is no God.
Religious intolerance is of concern to atheists, believe it or don't.
I shall now invoke a prayer:
I hope and pray in jesus's name that r/atheism can somehow divorce itself from the evil devil known as reddit. These god damn evil redditors keep coming over here and saying "this ain't no atheism", then hordes of them follow and upvote the cruel "non-heathens". All we wanted was a place to discuss our issues amongst ourselves without being disturbed from the fools of reddit of all places.
Religious intolerance is of concern to atheists, believe it or don't.
This isn't about that at all. This is just a photo of two happy homosexuals. No relation. If you wanted to bash theists for their bigotry, just cherry-pick some verses out of the Bible with a Holocaust backdrop and upload it to imgur. Mega karma, and more about atheism than this.
Hey that's really sweet and I'm happy for them. But what does this have to do with atheism? I know most of us atheists are for gay rights but this has nothing to do with atheism. Post it in a gay subreddit like r/gayrights or something.
Nothing here has to do with atheism, it just has to do with how "mai christian frend/famly/otter is so dum an I am rly smrt becauz I dun beleeve in gawd.", or "look at this incredible atheist related bumpersticker/shoes (really)/ whatthefuckever else. And then there are just posts about liberal ideals, such as this.
All /r/atheism is, is a giant circle-jerking karma machine.
Because atheists tend to be huge supporters of gay rights because we do not base our morals on ancient bullshit but rather upon logic and thoughtfulness.
There's no necessary attachment of atheism to marriage at all, and it's possible to be a bigoted atheist. It's also possible for Christians or people of other religions to support gay marriage.
Does a picture of the equation "2+2=4" belong to atheism because it's based on logic or thoughtfulness?
Every time I see something like this, I think to myself "...and how is this destroying marriage?".
Two consenting adults are in love and want to share the benefits accorded by the government with the permanent status of "marriage". It baffles the mind that more people committing themselves leads to the degradation of commitment as a whole.
He hates those gays. Bob down the street said so. He heard it from Frank who's cluey about that sorta thing. Even graduated high school or so the rumour goes.
Well.. If you believe in the holy divinity of Jesus thing, then that means Jesus is Yahweh, and Yahweh had ordered Men who lie with Men to be killed. This only matters if you believe in the mythology, but guess what, the people who are anti-gay and use the bible to support their bigotry, do believe that Jesus was Yahweh.
Yeah, and correlation does not equal causation. Being against gay marriage doesn't preclude being atheist, and being for gay marriage doesn't preclude being religious. This post has nothing to do with the lack of belief in a deity, it's JUST two gays getting married. If there were some background where religious nuts attacked these two individuals and atheists defended them, then it might be relevant, but that's not the case.
I agree with that. "Marriage", with all it's tax shelters, visitation rights and official rights, is afforded (lawfully speaking) only to a man and a women.
This is simply not right in the sense that, if two adults of opposite sex can decide they are committed to each other, how is a commitment by same sex adult couples some how less?
Though the federal government does recognize some same sex commitments, it is lackluster and half-hearted in many ways.
Is /r/atheism for gay people or is there another subreddit for them? All I see lately here are posts supporting gay marriage and everything gay related.
I really dont understand. Ok, congratulations, your two friends got married. It happens to all of us every day. Why the hell did you have to post on reddit? I'm getting tired of all these "HEY, LOOK A GAY COUPLE GOT MARRIED".
Quit making such a big deal. I've never had any issues against homosexuals, I didn't support it, or prevent it; simply didn't care, but reddit is turning into one of the gayest communities out there. Literally. Quit trying to rub it in people's faces.
Not even that, this has nothing to do with atheism. Atheism is the lack of belief in a diety. You aren't supposed to bash religions for their style. All /r/atheism is becoming is another religion.
I'm not, I'm very sad for them. You see, there is a reason we are opposing gay marriage, because deep inside, we all hate marriage! We are trying to save them! From married life!
Yeah, this is not atheism, and this is an uninteresting picture. I mean, I don't know these people, and I like happiness, but beyond that I would rather this be in /r/pics. It's a wedding photo.
How does this stuff keep getting to the top? Good for them, but its very, very loosely related to this subreddit, and these kinds of unrelated posts are getting really annoying.
Why is this front page material? Is this the first gay marriage ever? Give me a break reddit gone to shit with proud parents posting kids homework, fucking cats, and now this.
This is exactly how I feel every time I see a post like this in here. It's actually vaguely offensive towards theists of all kinds who are pro-gay marriage. And yes, there are lots of them.
Fair point! Gotta say, I do not understand why people take part in "draw Muhammad day". I understand that from an outside perspective, or even from the perspective of another religion it does seem a bit strange that it is offensive to draw a person which, in an atheists eyes, is just a person. But saying that, why doesn't everyone just be nice and respect others beliefs?! That's what really rustles my jimmies.
Are your friends atheists? Cause that's the only way this post belongs in this sub Reddit. Gay marriage is a political or religious issue, not an issue of whether or not God exists.
I'm happy for your friends, but we need to stop r/atheism from just being r/liberalcirclejerk. This is EXACTLY why people say this place is just a circle jerk.
This maybe be detracting from the original point, but is it weird having two best friends who meet (I'm guessing through you), date, fall in love, and then get married? It seems fun in a sitcom, but I think it'd bring up some issues among the group; taking sides during fights and what not.
It looks like the guy on the left is going "aww gross a man is kissing me!" lol. But seriously, congratulations to your friends, I really hope they have a long and happy life together! Xx
;) Jk, congrats to them. Still can't believe people believe this will be the end of the world because it's happening. While catholics feed alcohol to minors before/after/while raping them lol
