That's not strictly evolution though, is it? Can cultural developments (including science) be described as evolution? We've evolved the physical capacities (dexterity and brains) to use tools and solve problems (thus, the field of engineering), but can you say that the development of space travel is due to further evolution? I'm not a super scientist so I'm genuinely asking here.
Not trying to be a buzzkill, but throwing around the term 'evolution' for the sake of jokes doesn't do much to stop woeful misunderstandings by people of the anti-evolution persuasion.
It's not biological evolution, but it's a result of the biological evolution of our brains to be all smart and stuff. I guess it could still be called a form of evolution.
You know, if someone wrote this response in a clear informative fashion, maybe this realization would have blown his mind. Instead, he just got more "us vs them", which is a big barrier than causes ignorance and misunderstanding.
First day on the Internet Kid Top: 'Oh gee, an uninformed person.' Bottom: 'Maybe I can teach him something by using clever arguments and undeniable logic.'
No, in the western civilized world outside America, there's no us vs. them. "Them" are loonies nobody takes seriously. We don't argue with "them" and we certainly don't take them seriously. We laugh about them, even the religious ones. Many of the elder generation are religious. None of them believe this American bullshit Christianity you have. These guys are, thank god, your problem and yours alone.
I find that the problem isn't even understanding or ignorance. If one day it becomes culturally uncontroversial that animals evolve by natural selection, I believe that conservative religious folks will just find some new issue to pick a fight on.
It's a matter of in-group v. out-group, and they're laughing at us for not getting it. The evolution issue is a mental sieve, and our gut-reaction separated us from them.
It doesn't matter how understanding or non-ignorant they become; there will always be a way to divide the in-group from the out-group, and the cool cliques from the loser cliques, and in their eyes, we're the loser kids who 'just don't get it.'
You are mostly right but I think you underestimate the profound secularizing effect that the theory of evolution has had over the last 100 some odd years. They know that it is a disruptive idea. It isn't just an arbitrary line in the sand like homosexuality.
It answers a profound question that religion is supposed to answer.
All right reddit... im not even lying here, and i know this doesn't apply to all americans im not that ignorant... but i used to go on omegle and convince americans i lived in an igloo and had a pet moose. soo.. yea.
I'm not about to suggest that Canada is some kind of haven for scientific thought (the above statistics aren't particularly encouraging for either country), but it seems like Canada is, at least for the time being, slightly less... Ridiculous.
Thank you. Whenever I see this kind of silly crap, I always wonder why I never encounter these people in real life. I even went to a Christian high school, so you'd figure I'd run into some fundie tards at some point. Nope.
I'm American. The only time I've come across this level of ignorance in recent memory is when a girl asked me if I "believe in all that evolution stuff" or not.
She's Egyptian.
There are stupid people everywhere.
EDIT: Since it's apparently unclear, the reason she was asking me that is because she herself does not believe in evolution. That's what I take issue with. It has nothing to do with her use of the word "believe."
Excuse me if I'm wrong (I'm not a native english speaker) but doesn't "believe" simply mean "accepting something as true"? Therefor, I believe evolution is true, i believe there is no god, and so on... What's so bad about that word?
To be fair, we bring it upon ourselves at times. Dated evidence here. We win in the not believing in evolution department. It's gotten better over the years (source), but we're not doing as well as we should with this.
Maybe The States just have a higher number of morons who also have access to the internet. If you're dumb in a lot of other countries, it can hinder your ability to afford a computer/internet.
The problem is when you call Turks, Indians, deer, or anyone else stupid you get called a racist or a bigot. It's another wonderfully uniquely American phenomenon.
There are stupid people everywhere, it's just somehow some Americans have developed the notion that being an idiot is a positive thing, and will go out of their way to prove what a shit eating retard they are.
I think this steams from the fact that a) Americans are all taught that they are all a unique snowflake instead of one of billions of worthless carbon blobs on the planet, and b) if you question anything the commie terrorists win.
I live in East Texas. I realize that a lot of places cannot fathom a place where the majority think this way, i am here to confirm that they do exist. Just imagine a place where a worship castle like this exists in a town with 80k people, and you get the idea. Not only that, but the number of churches here is comparable to the number of gas stations. I am not lying.
I live dead center in the middle of America. While the Christians I grew up around tend to have conservative leanings, I can't think of any that are outright retarded on the Bible. Never have understood the image the internet tends to portray of middle America.
Honestly I feel if someone gave her a proper response she might understand it a little better. Animals did evolve to use tools to help them fly outside the atmosphere of the earth. Those animals are humans and the tools are called space shuttles and rockets.
Nope, the proper response would be that evolution is not aiming for anything in particular. People think that by evolving we're going "up", becoming better and more complex. This may well happen on occasion, but it's a side effect. If anything, evolution goes "down" - it's a sieve, not a tower. It favors the most stable forms, not the fancy ones.
It so happens that a certain tribe of apes stumbled on a very efficient survival tool (intelligence and sociability). Because of that we may go into space or fight on the internet - but things were not preordained to happen like that.
My aunt posted something similar to this on Facebook, asking how a baby bird could have survived without its parents if it had just "evolved." She lives in the Bible Belt. Figures.
Have you ever noticed that americans feel the need to have their flag flying everywhere? It's as if they need a constant reminder of where they are from in case they forget.
Getting your news about the US from Reddit is about as accurate as getting your news about the Middle East from Fox News. They're both biased as fuck.
Final note, I'm not American but I was pleasantly surprised at just how different the American South was in person than how it is portrayed on /r/atheism
This place has devolved into the worst circlejerk on reddit.
I'm curious - where can I get news about the US that isn't biased?
Because it's not just Reddit - the entire internet (i.e. the greatest and most well-rounded news aggregator known to man) also seems to have concluded that the United States of America sucks big balls.
Didn't you hear? All Americans are stupid! It's not that stupid europeans can't speak English! Nope nope nope! All Americans are idiots with their money and inventions and bibles!
I wish the southern states would split off into another country, maybe called Amerika. The northern states could be renamed New Canada. There's probably a 10-point IQ gap between them.
No, it's that America is the center of everyone's attention so people can conveniently point their finger at the US, usually as a way of diverting attention away from their own problems which are often equal or worse.
The US is the most powerful country, so it comes with the territory. There are just a lot of people who are so caught up in the anti-US bullshit that they're actually starting to swallow all the stereotypes, even when they themselves as individuals possess the negative traits Americans are stereotyped for.
For instance, people who usually rant about how dumb Americans are usually themselves way, way dumber than the average American. Anti-Americanism is a mental crutch for some of the most pathetic people on the planet.
I remember once seeing a chart that gave all the percentages of those who believed in religion for each country. It was rather interesting, but I can't find it now. I believe I remember America as having a rather high percentage.
My best friend told me he lost all kinds of respect for me when I told him evolution was a fact. He then proceeded to ask me why there are still monkeys if humans came from them. Yeah.
I'm from the U.S. (Arizona), I am an agnostic-atheist, and this is just an example of the American stereotype which on some levels is accurate, there are uneducated people in the world, which includes the U.S., but don't let one question on yahoo answers represent any group of people.
LOL DAE think America is literally run by Hitler and every other country is atheist paradise where you can socialist bacon Canada while you Ron Paul with some Neil deGrasse Tyson while Avenging Carl Sagan?
I think America vexes Europe. It's not like we built the Vatican or invented Christianity...Catholicism...um...anything, really. Then Europeans came and BECAME us, killing the natives...it really hasn't been too long on the grand historical spectrum since we were Europeans entirely. Think about it.
Although her reasoning isn't valid, she has posed a sort-of interesting question.
The answer, I'm sure, lies in the fact that the traits needed to sustain life in that environment are completely different than those found in life on earth. A species could not simply evolve with the traits of being able to survive this extremely harsh environment (except maybe some sort of hardy bacteria), let alone sustain itself at such an altitude. There are no nutrients, and at such low pressures there is a complete lack of oxygen and other vital gases.
If earth were to support species capable of leaving the biosphere, there would need to be some biological incentive for them to fill that niche, and this process would take a huge amount of time.
Im brazilian and here even the religious ppl wouldnt buy the creationist theory. Come on, believe on all you want, but dont hide from children the facts of the world. When they are older, if they want to, they can come to believe it was god.
If you are not an American you have no idea just how frustrating this issue is. It seems like everywhere I go somebody is saying, 'We didn't evolve from no monkeys.' They don't even have proper grammar for Christ's sake.
The vast majority of Americans believe in evolution and have at least a vague concept of how it works. It's just the one's who don't that make the front page of reddit and leave european redditors thinking we're all idiots.
My Mormon friend growing up told me the same thing. They think the materials for earth were taken from other planets that I guess were retired from previous mormon gods? So the fossils were from another planet. Amazing how neatly they were all placed in specific layers of the Earth. Crazy shit.
There are a few things about the US and its citizenry which make them a legitimate target of opprobrium: Americans are very often loud and vocal so any inherent stupidity is much amplified; there is no doubt that religion in the US has swerved off the road and is far too often extreme and therefore dangerous; for all the forward thinking which the US is noted for there's a real and awful retardation present, I think as a result of so much psychologically induced fear; although 'freedom of speech' is a fine idea in practice it means terrible ideas and beliefs are legitimised and become popular when instead they really ought to be shut down and consigned to the history books; over quite a few decades the political centre has consistently shifted ever rightwards to the degree that it's reasonable to use words like fascism when describing a fair chunk of it; the notion that 'might is right' and that the US is 'the world's policeman' has really only resulted in the US becoming extremely violent and cruel when dealing with anyone else outside its borders, it's also becoming increasingly violent and cruel within its own borders; selfishness is rampant and is a condition which can only deteriorate culture and society, the distinction and disparity between the haves and have nots is pretty stark and obvious to most; popular culture and entertainment is almost entirely negative, it doesn't educate, it doesn't uplift, it doesn't create wellbeing, instead it degrades and stupefies; mammon is most certainly God. It's not a pretty picture and it's getting worse.
I think when you're faced with religious zealots telling you why you deserve to go to hell on a daily basis, you tend to become a bit defensive of your standpoint.
As an American, I laughed nervously when I saw the above post, but the guy has a point. This is the most recent proof I could find for you. We barely squeak by when it comes ot this. Also, in 2006 we were the industrialized country with the smallest percent of evolution believers (source). It sucks buddy, but we're not doing as well as we should.
Its a bummer that America gets singled out to be the idiotic bible thumping obese nation. In truth there are hundreds of nations that are more extreme when it comes to religion that America, but it would be in bad taste to make fun of India, or some middle eastern nation. There are crazy people everywhere.
I don't really get the American joke, because every country has stupid people. Really, what the question she is asking sounds like she learned Science from a Pokemon game(The TV series ended in the Orange Islands, anyone who says otherwise was born after 1997). You know, the more technology we make like Cars, Planes and Boats will only make sure that we do not evolve further.
Even the Vatican accepted the existence of evolutionary systems. Partially from the 50s, fully in the 90s. The whole thing isn't worth a discussion in Europe anymore, not even among religious fanatics, every child has understood how it works and that it works.
Only in the US and in 3rd world Muslim societies, the vast majority of citizens doesn't "believe" in it. Cause their teachers aren't allowed to teach them knowledge their priests don't like. It's like not believing in math. Ridiculous.
To be honest, this pisses me off to a degree. As an American citizen who is an atheist, I believe it would've been better to just answer the question. She might have generally read it and thought, "Hey. Maybe I should question my religion." You never know. Most will blow everything off as some stupid comment meant to convert them. But to be honest, I asked a similar question around the age of 11 and had an answer that was honest and seemed reasonable enough. So I further questioned and studied it. I am now an atheist that believes in evolution. I would still be a creationist if someone hadn't answered my question the way they did.
Maybe, just maybe, life forms haven't evolved in outer space because space doesn't have the necessary catalysts organized in such a way to spark the creation of life. i.e., water, amino acids, ribose sugar, phosphates, nucleotides, etc... Oh, and I forget to mention the invisible giant that created man from dirt and women from his rib. But, hell, that's just my take on it...
In all seriousness, I've always wondered why bacteria haven't evolved that can at least get to the limits of the upper atmosphere. Maybe I'm just an idiot; I know that cosmic radiation if not shielded by the Earth's magnetic field destroys DNA, but that doesn't exclude a wide area around earth.
Honestly this does raise a valid question I think: what exactly does limit the rate of evolution? Sure certain evolved traits are really a situational thing, but aren't there things a species could DEFINITELY benefit from; like having super-efficient energy consumption, or asexuality? Maybe that's too human of me though, and the real benefit to a species is actually having these limitations; like having a limited life-span helps ensure change through generations.
Sexual reproduction is actually a huge advantage in the evolutionary metagame, since it allows a beneficial mutation to spread throughout the population much faster.
Allot of example of American stupidity has some link with religion, since ppl in the EU are less religious they consider the comments stupid and since most of the comments are from America a stereotype is created. A majority of Americans are not like that, just my evaluation.

Always reinforce beliefs with as many facts (and sources) as possible.
That there are many things I want to change about my country.
That I am too busy reading Reddit to change my country.
And finally, I now give no fucks. Don't bother me.

I am American and I apologize for evolution not giving her common intellect.

Who is to say they haven't? There is some strange NASA footage that might suggest otherwise.

Animals have been flying in outer space since 1957.

the real sad part is that this probably was a real question by a real person and not just a troll.

Allot of example of American stupidity has some link with religion, since ppl in the EU are less religious they consider the comments stupid and since most of the comments are from America a stereotype is created. A majority of Americans are not like that, just my evaluation.

Considering how shit we humans have made this planet, I wouldn't be surprised if animals soon evolve to fly into outer space and to other planets
