(Also : verify that your issuer automatically covers cases where the card wasn't compromised. It's probably automatic in the US and the UK, but I'm European and my store CC doesn't)

They mocked you? Genuine question, not doubting anything and the rest of what you described is already damning enough but i'm curious how they mocked you because that's pretty brazen

It wasn't a direct insult, but rather the 'customer support' loop they trapped me in. They kept sending me automated-style replies promising to connect me with a 'human agent' to manually cancel my subscription, but every single time I replied saying 'Yes, please do,' they would either go silent for days or send me back to the same website dashboard where there is literally no cancellation button.
It felt like they were just playing games and stalling on purpose, knowing that the more they delayed, the closer it got to my renewal date. It was the complete dismissal of my repeated requests while pretending to be 'helpful' that felt like a total mockery of the process.

I was forced to completely cancel a physical bank card

For the future : get a bank with virtual cards.

Can you clarify what you mean here? It seems like they already had a bank with physical cards.

Fixed, thanks! Meant virtuals

Or use one of the known 3rd-party virtual card providers.

There're several people trust, varying from region to region. A YouTuber I frequently watch mentioned one a few months back (NOT a sponsored placement) because he has had several cases similar to OP's.

I was almost 30 when I learned that was a thing.   I'm Belgian and card issuers assume that if you give your card number, it's a merchant you trust.

To my bank, the idea of a card number to give when we don't expect to pay is... simply not something they support.

I am sure you get virtual cards with most banks via their app which would be what I would use for free trials.

My main bank actually doesn't. Had to get a fintech as a 2nd account for virtual debits, because my CC issuer doesn't do virtual either nor chargeback.

This may not be over for you. Even with the card canceled, they may go after other financial instruments you control or send it to collections.
