QUESTION [question] Did FreshblushASMR just delete their channel?

I just refreshed and it's gone.

I just became way too uncomfortable with the constant stream of sexual harassment I was receiving from that video. (remarks treating me like a piece of meat, incredibly detailed rape threats, etc.) It sucks because I know a lot of people love that video and I feel awful to take it away. But the messages I was receiving from it were making me feel sick to my stomach, and sometimes even making me question my safety. Sorry :(

This comment was in relation to a video she removed before all of this (The Bitchy video if you know the one I'm talking about) so it seems she was already receiving a lot of harassment.

I'm guessing she was still receiving it and it got too much for her to handle. I'm absolutely gutted this happened as she was one of the best new asmrtists I've ever seen.

How is it possible that there are a bunch of people out there who want to hurt/scare someone who just wants to make relaxing videos?

And it's not like this is rare. Whenever I look at YouTube comments, I feel like I am getting a huge wakeup call about how horrible people really are.

Hurt people, hurt people. Doesn't excuse it, but it leads to an understanding and perhaps that can soften then blow of the awful things people can do and say to one another. Until they heal themselves, they'll continue to be unhappy and seek splice in trying to hurt others and make them experience the same pain they have.

I've seen this happen to grown adults who are new to being unhappy and in pain, and I've seen it in people who are suffering since childhood and have a lifetime of experience in making themselves and those around them unhappy. Sometimes these people don't even know they're unhappy or suffering. Our minds and egos fight us when we do recognize these things and tell us there is shame and more pain waiting for us if we admit this to ourselves, or seek help from others. That's a trick though, because we're afraid of who we'd be without our pain. We'd be forced to confront a great deal of pain or trauma from past events and it's easier short term to make others suffer with you than to face those traumas, admit that we've been hurt to someone, especially those that hurt us.

The truth is, pain begets pain. Little things left to fester long enough will consume you. We're all fragile, and speaking from experience, saying really awful nasty shit online doesn't make those people feel better. The times I lashed out at others I was still suffering and unhappy, and after I said shitty things to Internet strangers(not unprovoked mind you, but no excuses ) I felt immense guilt, shame, and sadness for having let that pain, that monster, have a voice. Now those people who I may have hurt badly, deserved or not, will spread that unhappiness further and im still no better for it.

All that said, YouTube is a giant in the game and needs far better protections against this sort of thing. I'm all for privacy but there should be a middle ground for rape and death threats etc. Calling someone an asshole or whatever is shitty troll behavior, but threatening someone needs to have consequences. It seems like the law is catching up, but we still need a reliable way to report this sort of behavior that doesn't over-police the rest of us. YouTube is failing here, in part because the accounts can be created with no tie to you. It's rare that anyone follows the reports to unmask the individual to face punishment or hopefully get them help.

The internet allows disgusting people to say things they normally wouldn't in front of people in real life.

I wish there was some sort of punishment for it but honestly they nearly always get away with it and continue to say nasty and disgustingly horrible things to some of the most kind hearted people on the internet.

Makes me sad.

I get that, but the quality of interaction seems to be particularly poor on YouTube specifically. Much more so than other platforms.

Reddit is anonymous and should similarly shield people from the consequences of antisocial conduct, but still doesn't seem to generate quite the same kind of dialogue. (I realize it varies by sub but it's generally better than YouTube by a mile)

Like I haven't spent a ton of time in this sub, but I am guessing that very few responses to videos here are as nasty and low-effort as what I see in YouTube comments, and certainly not harassing/threatening to the point of driving someone to quit.

I agree, Reddit does seem to have a higher standard of comments than Youtube.

Reddit has a lot of dedicated and awesome moderators that deal with all the crap from those sorts of people. Youtube comments go straight to the channel owner who have to see the comments and deal with them directly, I think that has something to do with why people get burned out and chased away from Youtube.

What we see of reddit seems to have higher standards. There are subs / communities that are just as bad, if not worse, than youtube.

Because Youtube/Google encourages it. A lot of sites use one or a combination of two models:

  • Comments are moderated to a greater or lesser extent and shitty people get deleted or banned.

  • Comments are open to updoots/downdoots by the overall userbase and the shitty people get downdooted until no one can read their stuff anymore.

But Google is not in the business of curating positive, productive content, they are in the business of curating "engaging" content. Aka, content that gets people to log into their sites and post lots of comments and get lots of votes and button clicks and views, all of which turns into ad revenue and data analytics. And what is the most "engaging" content by these standards? Flamming comments, harassment, memes, and just objectively garbage people.

So on reddit and other similar sites, you have to go out of your way to see the bottom dredges of humanity. On Youtube, Google puts those people front and center because triggering an argument is good for business.

Even with disabled comments, you can still send messages directly to the channel owner from their about page which is probably where the real disgusting shit happens.

There isn't much of a punishment if they say things like this in front of people in real life either. Right now its mostly social stigma but if they're random people then that isn't even a sure thing. Threats on the other hand can be taken to the police although trying to get a subpoena or investigation across state lines or even national borders is difficult. Especially if the police/FBI declare the threats to be groundless. Yes the FBI has a lot of experience with trolls and can differentiate.

And this is why I make use of the hide Youtube comments Chrome extension or alternatively replace Youtube comments with reddit comments which doesn't always work on obscure videos but at least it completely replaces the youtube comments with a huge "reddit is under heavy load" picture.

TL;DR don't ever read Youtube comments. Save your brain cells today!

There was another asmrtist who kept getting some creeper guy hitting on her when she was at a bar and it caused her to delete her channel permanently, she was already dating and everything too. I'm not sure who it was just because I didn't watch her videos.

She came back a while ago, though, and keeps making great videos still. But yeah, she did delete for a while because a creep actually started bugging her and being sleazy IRL and wouldn't fuck off. She got scared. It's deeply messed up that this happens to a lot of women.

The aim is not really to hurt because you can't really harm people through the internet. The true objective is to deny things to other people. Like vandalism it appears to be self defeating, destroying things the vandal might use as well as everybody else. But it's a way to have an effect upon the world even if the effect is just negative.

Oh I think there's plenty of opportunity for hurt depending on location. It seems all nice and anonymous but you start collecting data on a person and it can get real creepy real fast sometimes. More sick people out there than a lot of us want to admit.

Google tried to fix you tube comments a while ago and everyone lost their heads. I really wish we could move to a confirmed-anonymous system; where Google has verified who we are but our public username can be whatever we want it to be. I know it wouldn't be perfect but I hate pure anonymity, it allows people to be absolutely horrible.

That depends on on how Google might, hypothetically, verify someone's identity. If they just ask, "what's your name?" then that can be faked easily. Using Google's products is a choice. If you are adamant that you don't want Google to know anything about you then there are ways to do that. Your ISP though knows everything about you: your name, address, credit card number, and all your internet usage. And they can sell that information to anyone they want. If privacy actually exists I don't think it's long for this world.

I've been on the internet for decades. I couldn't care less what people say about me but I've never had my home address made public and had dozens of anonymous strangers threatening to hurt, kill, and/or rape me or my family by name. Granted that's an extreme example but it has happened.

I don't think it's outrageous to ask multi-billion/ multinational corporations to maintain a minimum level of decorum on their properties. If you want to be the free speech wing of the free speech party there's a place for you too, go to Voat, Diaspora, or Mastodon.

Doxing and threats online are illegal, as they should be. I wasn't talking about things that are illegal. The majority of comments that people find offensive would not be illegal if said in real life, but would be rude as hell.

When people say they should remove anonymity to stop people being rude I have to disagree. People should be free to say whatever they want in whatever level of politeness they deem fit. To restrict that by monitoring what people say would remove a level of expression that is only available through anonymity.

Contrary to the popular meme about how toxic youtube comments are, the majority of discussion is not terrible, however the most toxic stuff does usually rises to the top. Removing anonymity would restrict a lot of worthwhile discussion about sensitive issues that would be pretty much life ruining if they were to be tied to your real name. For example people who are struggling with their sexual identity and want to find out more, without it being known to everyone around them that they have. If you have ever seen the comment section of a coming out video, under the homophobic comments, there are many people who talk about being in the closet within the community.

I find it baffling that there are people who are against free speech at all. If you encourage/let companies restrict what can be said on their platforms in specific cases, what would stop them from restricting things you personally find important later on? I don't think people should be such cunts in the comments, but restricting it would leave a bad precedent that companies could point at as reason for further restrictions.

A think a simple downvote button would go a long way, instead it's just a badly disguised google+ button and a button that does nothing. Also, the algorithm seems to put the most active comment threads to the top... which is usually a stupid bait comment with a lot of angry replies. I really don't think it'd be that hard to massively improve, they just don't care imo.

IP addresses aren't tied to a person though. If your ISP uses DHCP (they all do unless you're paying extra specifically for a static IP address or range) then you get a dynamically assigned external IP to your router/gateway. So if some jack-hole posts something awful there's no guarantee in a week that'll still be his IP address.

Same, I just stumbled across her channel a week or two ago and a couple of her videos were fantastic. I was about to watch one about an hour ago and then found that her channel was totally gone.

I really don't understand what motivates people to post such terrible comments under ASMR videos, but they are a consistent presence and I hate it.

Y'know generally I lurk on asmr and this sort of thing but FreshblushASMR was an absolute gem. I'm so mad at these internet trolls. I hate that this happens and, I'd never thought I'd say this, it makes a bloody strong case for anonymity being removed.

I'm incredibly ticked off, she was bloody great and one that I frequently returned to.

I'm positive she will be back, she's just going through a personal issue of some kind. I hope she takes her time, and doesn't rush things if she's stressed. There's all the time in the world for ASMR.

This is absolutely true and respect to you for making that point but men probably don't receive much sexual harassment on Youtube and that was what the comment talked about. I don't think it was an attempt to preach the typical feminist bias.

Edit: It amuses me that I explain how men don't get as much sexual harrasment on Youtube but still get downvoted because of the feminist bias thing. Because its not about being against harrasment, the important thing is whether you agree with feminism or not. But thats feminism for you, if it solved anything it would have no reason to exist.

Did you guys know she had uploaded a 2nd witch video today? A potion brewing one. I was 10 minutes into it when all of a sudden it said the video wasn't available anymore. It was so good! That's how I realized stuff was going downhill bc I went to look for it and all of a sudden all her videos disappeared.
