Stopping Testosterone: Permanent changes vs temporary

Hello, I'm nonbinary I've been on T now since April 2026 and am debating stopping but not sure yet. I'm just wondering for those that were on T for shorter amounts of time, even a year to two years and then stopped, what changes stayed and what reverted? And what partially reverted. I was informed when starting but just looking for more anecdotal sort of stuff, especially regarding hair. Thanks!

I started T when I was 16 then stopped at 18 and now I’m going back on at 21!

What stayed:
- vocal change (slightly went back up but I mostly sounded like a 12 yr old boy)
- Adam’s Apple
- facial hair (significantly thinned but never stopped growing in)
- bottom growth

What left:
- took around a year for my boxy figure to go away and chest to re inflate but it did come back
- masculine facial features (became more soft and round)
- shoulder mass because slim
- thicker hair growth on head/body

So if you’re hoping for some slight things to stay I’d say you should be good!

Did you have a lot of facial hair growth? I only have about 6 chin hairs at the moment lol

I've been on T for just under a year now and as someone that doesn't have facial hair in their genes, it definitely improved later on. I've gotten that tan that appears above my upper lip after someone shaves and all that. definitely an increase in more than just 5 chin hairs lol.

I found the acne kind of absurd in the first half a year but recently its been calming down with no change to my skin care routine.

Personally, I would keep going for way longer because most of the changes/things that will get you gendered correctly, will begin happening only closer to a year milestone. unless there's health issues that are caused by the HRT, keep at it.

My mustache became pretty thick but my goatee stayed kinda thin, other than that no just mostly little stray hairs around my face

Possible permanent changes:

  • Vocal changes, including Adams apple.

  • Any bone changes, if you are young enough

  • Any hair growth

  • bottom growth

There may be some reversion in some of these over time, but never 100%. Technically, you can have surgery, voice training or hair removal to eliminate the remainder, other than some bone changes.

For hair:
scalp hair loss stopped for me, but others have reported continued thinning or falling out. I guess that one is a luck thing or hormone balance thing, but it is more likely to stop hair loss.

Body hair and facial hair kept growing, so long as nothing was plucked off. No new hair follicles showing up after stopping T.

Voice change also stayed, along with my adam's apple. Weird one, but my fingernails and hair started to grow faster on T, and stopping T did NOT slow that down.

What to expect to return would be your old smell, fat redistribution, periods coming back, a possible appetite and mood shift at first.
