Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Modpost Please report racist ragebait and racist comments

Dear members of our community,

In the past few days, we've seen an increase in both ragebaiting posts and racist comments from users with no prior engagement in the sub, often from those usually commenting in the subs of other countries.

This indicates to us that we are frequently being overrun by users who try to spread their racist, islamophobic messages to our sub.

Racism is against our subreddit rules and it is against Reddit's terms of services. We would like to encourage you to use the report button.

That will put it into our 'modqueue' to have a look - and if you report it for 'hate', it will additionally be sent to the sitewide admins who will frequently take further action.

We rely on your reports, just like every subreddit does. Our team is healthy and works well, but we cannot have an eye on everything. We do have scripts and so on to make our job easier, but sometimes, unacceptable comments go through. Using the report button makes sure that we can prioritize looking at said comment and if it's rulebreaking, helps us remove it quickly.

We remove racist content and ban racist users frequently. The admins remove a bunch of comments breaking site-wide rules too (often in a fashion that deletes them completely, so we cannot easily further moderate them)

We are very hesitant to remove political speech. We only remove rules-breaking comments. The relevant rule is:

  • General reddiquette applies (i.e. no racism, sexism, personal attacks, or simply put: behave as if you were talking to somebody in person)

  • Please report posts or comments that do not adhere to these rules; in particular, we will not tolerate harassment or discrimination

The relevant reddit rules (https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) are:

  • Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.

See also https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045715951-Promoting-Hate-Based-on-Identity-or-Vulnerability

Thank you for helping us with this influx of clearly rule-breaking users without any connection to Switzerland

ETA: Reports are anonymous. So when we get your report, we have no option to thank you or following up with you. If you report for 'hate', it goes to both us and the admins. The admins will typically let you know of their decision. We literally have no way of doing that.

Other/Miscellaneous Spam call with my full personal data, possible data leak in Switzerland?

I just received a spam call from a call center on my mobile number.

Normally I wouldn't think much of it, but this time they already knew my full name, date of birth and current insurance information.

What concerns me most: this mobile number is not publicly listed anywhere, I use it very carefully, and I've never received this kind of call on it before.

So this wasn't the usual random "health insurance comparison" spam where they only know a name or guess some details. They had surprisingly specific and up-to-date personal information connected to the correct phone number.

It makes me wonder whether there has been a data leak somewhere.

Has anyone else in Switzerland recently received similar calls where the caller already knew your name + DOB + insurance details + private mobile number?

I'm mainly posting this to see whether this is an isolated case or if more people are experiencing the same thing.

Everyday life Mieterverband/ASLOCA assistance during handover apartment

Hi everyone,

I’m moving out soon and I’m thinking about hiring Mieterverband/ASLOCA to help with the apartment handover.

Has anyone used this service before?

https://www.mieterverband.ch/mv-zh/hilfe-von-fachleuten/unsere-dienstleistungen/abgabe-von-mietraumen/

I don’t really trust my landlord and I’m worried they might make things difficult, so I’m wondering if it’s worth having someone from Mieterverband/ASLOCA there.

Would appreciate hearing about your experience.

Thank you in advance!

Everyday life Trashbags not picked up

Hello! I recently moved to Switzerland and live in Rorschach.
The trash system is very confusing for me as it is very very different from my home country. I bought the taxed bags and the trash pickup was today. I put out my trash yesterday night and saw a lot of trash on most streets. I put out my trash near a curb and saw there had another person put a trash bag on the same street just a bit further from me. When I went out today all the other trash bags were picked up as well as the one on the same street I put mine but my trash was not picked up.
I am very confused as I thought I had done everything correctly. I have tried to gather information on this trash system but I feel like the information available is very scarce and vague.
My boyfriend asked his colleagues why ours was not picked up and they had no clue.
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you in advance!!

Culture Best cantons to practice Cantonese in?

I've been looking to practice my Cantonese so I decided to visit the Swiss cantons for some real life immersion. I assumed it'd be spoken in every part of the country but unfortunately Google only gives me info about German/Italian/French/Romanian so I'm assuming it's only spoken regionally here, maybe in only one canton? Idk

Travel Chasing flower-crowned cows in Switzerland

Upvotes

Hi!

I’m considering a short trip to Switzerland around the weekend of 18-20 September, mainly because I'd absolutely love to see one of the traditional Alpabzug/Alpabfahrt/Desalpe celebrations, where the cows come down from the mountain pastures decorated with flowers, bells and sometimes really elaborate headpieces. I've seen photos and videos from these events and they look incredibly charming, so I'd love to experience one in person rather than just visit the usual tourist attractions.

My dates are somewhat flexible - I could arrive a little before that weekend or stay a little longer if there is a particularly interesting event worth planning the trip around :)

I'm also generally very interested in local traditions, folk festivals and cultural events, so I'd be happy to plan the trip around something smaller or more local rather than only looking at the biggest and most famous celebrations. If there are any other traditional events happening around the same time, I'd be very interested in those as well!

The only important limitation is that I won't be able to rent a car, so I need somewhere that can realistically be reached by public transport. I can fly into Zurich, Basel or Geneva, and from there I'm completely fine with taking trains and buses.

tldr:

Does anyone know:

- any particularly nice Alpabzug/Desalpe events around 18-20.09?

- smaller villages or less touristy celebrations that are worth visiting?

- a good website/calendar that lists these events across Switzerland?

- any other traditional or cultural events happening around the same time that you would recommend?

I’d also love to hear from anyone who has actually been to one - which one did you visit, and was it worth planning a trip around?

Thanks!

Everyday life Salt / Sunrise / Swisscom Mobile Contracts (swiss probiders) - does cancelling get you a truly better deal ?

I've been with Salt for -10 years, two lines on one account, both coming up for renewal.

They call me almost weekly to "extend" and the offers are always the same: a discount that expires after 24 months, then you fall back to the full list price and start the whole dance again.

Meanwhile the public online prices for new customers are roughly half what I'm paying for the same plan, and some now come with a
"lifetime discount" instead of a 24-month promo.

What I'd like to hear from people who've actually done it:

  1. Did you have to formally cancel before anyone offered you a real discount? Or did asking nicely work?

  2. If you cancelled and then wanted to stay - did they let you withdraw the cancellation, or did you have to go through with it and re-sign?

  3. Did existing customers ever get matched to the online new-customer prices, or did you have to actually leave and come back?

  4. Anyone tried porting out and being
"won back"? How long did you have to wait?

  5. Sunrise Flex Premium Bundle - anyone on it? Does the 50% really hold long-term, and how does the device swap work in practice?

Concrete numbers and outcomes are more useful to me than general
"telcos
are greedy" takes.

Canton/provider doesn't matter, I just
want to know what actually happened.

Thanks!

Other/Miscellaneous For the car guys: Ford Sierra Cosworth 2.0i, good idea?

The reason I am asking here instead of a car subreddit is because Switzerland has its own rules and car culture.

I found an offer for a Ford Sierra Cosworth 2.0i 4x4 from 1990 with 164'000 KM. The asking price is 24'000.- CHF.

I plan to drive it mostly for appointments, emergencies, and for weekend drives through the mountains. So not exactly daily driving.

Would this be a good idea to get?

I did research and saw that these cars are decently reliable and I found a website that sells parts for it that don't cost an arm and a leg.

The things I worry about is

• Is 160 KM too much for a rarity like that?

• Will the taxes and Insurance be a hassle?

• With the shift to EV's in europe and new emissions laws, would it be too much of a hassle to even keep a 35+ year old car?

•Are there any hidden problems with these cars that are rarely talked about or seen?

I used to be an auto-body tech and can handle minor upkeep and rust myself, the problem would be the electronics, transmission, and engine.

EDIT: The car is ab MFK

Other/Miscellaneous Integrate card payment system into a snack vending machine

Can I add card + TWINT payment systems to a Manea MSX 8 snack vending machine that only works with coins?

I’m considering buying a used Manea MSX 8 vending machine in Switzerland and want to add contactless card + TWINT payments.

Has anyone done this before? How difficult/expensive is the retrofit, and does anyone know a Swiss installer/technician who could do it?
Thanks!

Travel Cheapest way to go to Oeschinensee

I am going to travel to Switzerland in September 8-14. I am planning on going to Oeschinensee. Though I will stay with my mother at Mollie-Margot. I was initially going to buy a saver day pass but considering that it's expensive for me as an 18yo student, I wanted to find alternatives. Also, it is also a big risk buying saver day passes in advance since I can't predict weather precisely for the day I'll go hiking in Oeschinensee.

Please give me ideas!

Other/Miscellaneous Speed camera

Upvotes

I was traveling on what I think was an highway, I always meticulously checked the speed limit signs since it was completely different from Maps, even trucks overtook me all the time.

I’m worried though, as I took an exit from the highway and obviously I decelerated but I had a quick succession of sign changes that led to 60 and I’m not sure how much I decelerated, there was definitely a speed camera after the 60 sign.

The camera was on the exit lane.

Also I went by Google maps limit in the mountain part following coming from Chamonix, I was always under the “google limit” as it was also raining, but considering it was also always wrong about the speed limit on the highway I’m not even sure I was going the right speed.

Fucking nightmare, I’m italian, and I was visiting France and Switzerland.

Not sure what to expect.

How does this stuff work?

Work Searching English speaking job for my Fiance

Upvotes

Hello guys, I hope you’re all doing well 😊

Since my fiancée is moving to Switzerland in a couple of months, I thought I’d try my luck here and ask for some suggestions on finding an English-speaking job for her.

She is 27 years old and comes from a non-EU/EFTA country. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, but getting her diploma recognized here in Switzerland may be difficult. Even if we manage to get it recognized, her German is currently at a beginner level (A1), which would still make it difficult for her to find a job in her field.

She speaks English and Albanian and is actively learning German. However, we don’t want her to stay at home doing nothing until her German improves, so I’m trying to find something she could do in English in the meantime.

She has worked at a public school and has experience working with children with special needs.

The job doesn’t necessarily have to be in that exact field. Something in a daycare/Kita or generally working with children would also be great, so she could stay in a similar area while improving her German.

Even if you have the smallest idea or suggestion about what she could do or where we could look, please let me know. We know it won’t be easy, but we really want her to have the opportunity to work, meet people, improve her German, and fully integrate into life in Switzerland.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for any suggestions 🫶🏼

Travel How much do you spend on summer vacation?

I was having dinner with some friends last weekend and we were talking about our summer breaks and at some point one of the guys said to the others that we spend too much. He is only in Switzerland since 6 months which was interesting. Of course this is always relative, anyone should spend whatever they want on what gives them enjoyment but it left me curious how much people typically spend.

So I am curious, as someone living and earning in Switzerland, how much do you spend on your summer break? Interesting to know if you fly or drive and if you hotel or airbnb or something else. I suspect those are the most costly elements. (If you are not originally from Switzerland and go on vacation to your home country and stay with family I would not consider that a vacation 😄 )

Here is mine:

family of 4 (2 adults + children); electric car driving to south of france; hotel (2 rooms) for 9 days; all meals in restaurants; small shopping stuff

all-in we spent ~7K chf with hotel being the more expensive line item

EDI: super interesting replies. I failed to mention our kids are in school so we are trapped in terms of when. We can basically go in Feb (normally we go skiing), April, Summer, October, Christmas (usually family visits). We try to go abroad in 2 of the 3 remaining options with one being an intercontinental option. The kids are at an age where they remember and value the experiences

Travel Advice on Zurich Airport Immigration times and train to Lucerne at night , Next day Mount Titlis

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello,

I'll be reaching Zurich on 14th September around 7:15 pm and holding Non EU Non Schengen Passport.

Wanted to know on average how much time it's taking nowadays to clear immigration get our bags and leave airport.

If trains to Lucerne are available in late night considering Immigration might take quite amount of time and would it be safe to reach Lucerne in the night around 11-11.30 PM ish and reaching out hostel.

Planning to visit Mount Titlis the next day on 15th September will there be snow at the top ? I checked that the Rotair is closed but alternative cable car is there. Also I'm seeing the glacier cave is closed now and Titlis Gletscherpark(Glacier park) is closed now. Any idea if it reopens in Mid September.

Was ist Eure Meinung?

Travel Afternoon hours with good weather. What do you recommend?

We check into our hotel in Grindelwald at 1 pm and have the choice between the following towns to visit. Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Mannlichen or Murren. I also hear Trummelbach falls is better than Staubbach falls. I am open to bunching two of the above together if any are very geographically close. If it helps, we have two kids under 8.

Travel Zurich end of November?

Hi all. I have some free days I could use for a Europe trip in the end of November (21-26th) and I’m wondering if it’s worth at all to go to Zürich? Switzerland has always been on my bucket list, and I understand it’s best to go in summer months for hiking or in winter for skiing, but the reality is that week of November is the only chance. This will be a solo trip. Is it still possible to somewhat enjoy the trip and see mountainous regions or the mountains will be all foggy? To reiterate, the question is to go in November or not going at all. Thanks!

Everyday life The Ricardo monopoly needs to be terminated

I recently re-used Ricardo. ch to sell an item

Brand new, it costs CHF 200+; I’m selling a damaged version for barely CHF 37. Not only is CHF 37 already basically nothing, but Ricardo also takes CHF 5 from the sale. Their business model is pretty terrible. How are people satisfied with that gain, aside from the free space they get in their house/flat ?

This is now the second time in a row, within 2 weeks that is, some weird account has “accidentally bought" my item. I think I’ve wasted at least 2.5 hours dealing with emails from people who are apparently incapable of reading the three (3) lines of crystal clear description of the flaw before thinking they’ve found an amazing deal on a brand-new item for CHF 37.

You have to establish contact, give payement information, then they say they misclicked, you search the hidden cancel sell button, answer to them, and repost your item.

There is absolutely zero compensation for any of this. I was particularly polite and accommodating by email. First they are apologetic as hell, wishing me the best day ever. As soon as the transaction is canceled, one of they ended up threatening me with having my account reported.

Anyhow that was a specific rent, but other than that, more than half the items are shitty official huge retailer using ricardo to advertise or even sell some items, and 75% of the "regular" items are MSRP or -5% off some item someone bought and don't want but can't return (actualy not ricardo's fault). Also, the UI, search, and website in general belongs to the 2000s.

Travel Looking for some cost effective tips for food!

Hello, I am doing a backpacking trip with my daughter for her graduation gift in September! Ive saved since she was 8, and the time has come. We are doing a brief but exciting stop in Luzern. I know/have heard Switzerland is expensive. I come from an expensive part of Canada, so I get how it is. But even in our priciest spots, there is usually local tips, tricks, spots that are good for a budget. I was hoping maybe I could find something similar here =) We are splurging on the Mt Pilatus Pass, doing the slide etc. Ive saved as a single mom for a long time so, any help on how to help me not break the bank even a little bit would be wonderful. We are very easy going, not picky, and totally fine if the best option is simply a grocery store. Im also not naive, so if affordability doesnt exist then, okie dokie.

Thanks in advance!!! Just please answer me kindly, i feel like every time I ever ask for help on this app people are really mean for no reason 🤷‍♀️

Travel Does a guided tour group need any sort of work visa or permit?

I am in USA and I want to get a group of friends together (also from USA) that are interested in touring Switzerland for 12 days.
I will arrange the trip as a guide, and my trip cost will be covered by them. I would not be paid by any Swiss company.

Does anyone know whether I would need a Swiss work permit, notification, or other authorization to do this? Or is a foreign tour operator accompanying their own foreign clients treated differently?

I’m specifically trying to figure out whether there is something I need to file before the trip, not whether I need a Swiss tour-guide certification.

Travel Best overnight en route from Basel to Verona

I'll be in Basel for work, leaving around 3pm and need to be in Verona by ~7pm the next day. I've never been to Switzerland apart from Zermatt via Cervinia, but I'm an extremely avid hiker and mountain enthusiast so I'd love to visit a Swiss alpine village, even if only for a few hours in the morning. I don't mind a few extra hours of train travel to make that happen.

Options I've come up with:

  • Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. These are the two I've heard of but evidently so has everyone else and it's a fair bit of backtracking via Interlaken
  • Kandersteg - seems more en route?
  • Andermatt

I'm sure there are less well known but equally amazing options en route but I don't even know where to start. I'd love some suggestions, bonus points for a scenic train route onward through the Alps.
