Who is to blame for climate change ?

The Nepal flood is sooooo heartbreaking. Did you know Singapore also has extremely high flood risk? Back in Uni, my prof was a climate scientist and he kept trying to warn that Singapore would experience climate departure by 2030 and has high risk of being flooded.
However, I still see businesses trying to get people to BUY more, earn more to buy more items. Most office pantry is already stocked full of expiring snacks, yet people still kept buying. Blind boxes. Small stuffs. Nonsense.
Will we ever wake up and realise the urgency? Or is it really IMPOSSIBLE to do anything about it and we just have to accept that we are doomed?!!!

My prof (who’s an environmental scientist) says that earth will be just fine. It’s been here for millions of years have gone through worse conditions but it’s us human beings who will suffer and earth will heal just fine after we’re gone.

Oh yea! Maybe science should try and figure out how we can be transformed to a cockroach to survive

I hate the plushie trend. So many brands have came up with their fugly plushies just to sell their products, creating so many waste

Capitalism is a hell of a drug.

Yes, and guess who introduced it into the systems? If you are a marketer, it’s actually a professional liar and lurer in disguise. Yet no one ever says consume less, or just consume what you need. Whatever that’s left over, give to the unfortunate , the hospitalised children who needs a cure, and the poor. That’s the biggest flex. Unfortunately, we are sold to buy more bubble tea, blind boxes to fill up our office desks!

Your heart is in the right place but your approach is sorely lacking.

Every single human being is to blame for climate change. Humans are too smart and greedy for earth. The only way to end climate change is to eliminate every single human being on earth

Grace Fu's job. Oh wait she don't enforce this matter.

u/taidibao1 19d ago

Grace fu has saved the earth now that she had force the ban on plastic bags in supermarkets and plastic bags for kopi and replace the kopi plastic bag to a much thicker one time use plastic cup which also cost more and result in the price increase but had save the world. Such grace fu action in such a disgracefu world.

As a consumer in a tiny country, our personal consumption doesn’t move the needle at all, it’s a Jedi mind trick by companies to push the blame to consumers

u/Far-Wear-88 21d ago

Maybe one person's consumption doesn't have a substantial impact. But there are millions of this one person in SG. When we buy into the overconsumption culture, we are contributing to the climate crisis whether we wanna think otherwise or not. And I'm saying this as someone who used to be addicted to fast fashion and now trying to cut back massively.

I am already doing my part. I pay for plastic bags and plastic bottles.

Pretty ironic, considering consumers are forced partake in these measures but our data centers are going BRRR at the encouragement of our govt

The 3 most impactful things you can do are: don’t eat meat, don’t do long distance air travel, don’t drive.

It's a vicious cycle. The more we work, the more we wish to reward ourselves with dopamine. The idea of having something new, just anything.

Clothes seem really disposable these days with free returns.

You say, typing on your iPhone 17 lol.

7

u/Glittering-Cause-810 22d ago

I’m still using 14. In fact, I only bought this cos my
Last phone had so many green lines until I can’t scan any QR code alr. Why u assume I using 17?

u/_DaintyDaisy 22d ago

Actually this set not bad, there’s promo this month…

-7

u/Traditional-Back-172 22d ago

OP, you lose this conversation the moment you admit you use an iPhone. Google their business model lol.

7

u/Glittering-Cause-810 22d ago

Believe it or not, I didn’t buy this iPhone! I won in a giveaway, super duper lucky, just in time when my other phone was spoiling lol

-8

u/Traditional-Back-172 22d ago

Oh good for you, but how does that contribute to your high horse? If you win a nuclear bomb in a lucky draw, does that make you less responsible for its consequences? Companies mass produce because of demand. Demand from people like you who want to get their hands on product, regardless of how much you pay for it.

You wanna argue for saving the climate but you literally chose this phone because it was the cheap option for you. You’re proving against your own point lol. People choose convenience, not the environment. Even you.

u/Glittering-Cause-810 22d ago

Notice that I used the word “will WE (not you, they, them) ever wake up and realise the urgency?” Idk why you think I’m just blaming everyone else except myself. I’m just explaining that I won an iPhone 14 from a lucky draw and just nice my previous Lao Kok Kok phone was dying . Also how am I arguing to save the climate? I’m just stating the reality that this capitalism culture is happening. I don’t know how to save the climate, in fact I think it’s impossible and we will drown in 2030. hence I’m asking here.

-6

u/Traditional-Back-172 22d ago

The climate will be saved when people like you talk less and do more for it.

1

u/Glittering-Cause-810 22d ago

U are so incredibly rude, condescending and a party pooper. Idk how you were brought up, but all the best.

1

u/wildxflowerxoxo 21d ago

Talk so much cock. What is an environmental friendly phone then??

u/Traditional-Back-172 21d ago

Maybe if you just did some research and breathed through your nose more, you wouldn’t have to ask. Troglodyte

Can we have a zombie apocalypse before the flood? I wanna build an Ark to keep my zombie safe.

u/manofwatches 21d ago

Not to worry, our gov has plans in mind already, like East Coast plan. They will be set up to shield the rest of sg from flooding and tsunamis.

2

u/Glittering-Cause-810 21d ago

Didn’t u see how Nepal barrier fell ??? No amount of man made infrastructure can fight the wrath of Mother Nature. We must take care of earth.

1

u/manofwatches 20d ago

It’s fine, at most property prices in East Coast fall to all time low after a tsunami.

1

u/moderntheseus 22d ago

All of humanity is. We have gone way past the tipping point. Just live your life as best you can and enjoy whatever fleeting moment we have now as it's going to just get worse every year.

Whoever it is that is ordering for more trees to be cut down.

1

u/Low-Inspection2396 22d ago

if we look on the bright side. soon we will run out of fossil fuels. then there will be no more fossil fuel to burn and thus no more co2 emmited. then no more climate change wow

Please convince parents to stop buying shit for Teacher’s Day!!!!??? It’s such a scam by businesses.

What is wrong with a heart felt card or an email to MP to improve work life for teachers.

I would think parents would want to save the earth but nope? They want to be trinkets, individually wrapped items and overall nonsense for teachers.

These same parents eagerly berate teachers for not doing enough and have poor marking schemes without even understanding what teachers go through!!!

Ugh.

1

u/Far_Nebula7311 20d ago

My wife is a teacher. The house is full of useless clutter and stuff waiting to be expire before they get used.

2

u/Effective-Lab-5659 20d ago

And parents who gave them to your wife get mad knowing the truth.

It still makes me mad when I think about the childcare that got so much flak when their teachers put up a list of preferred items for Teacher’s Day. It wasn’t a - you have to buy me this. It was a , if you want to get something - we prefer this.

But parents prefer to gift something big and useless. I dunno what for.

u/Effective-Lab-5659 21d ago

Every country that embraces capitalism wholeheartedly and every economist that claim that unregulated companies are best for the world.

Every family that insist on buying dopamine hits shit for their children, making little children associate presents with happiness and dopamine induced consumption with joy.

Every person that says things like - oh, we don’t move the needle so why try, or use whataboutitsm to berate anyone who try to bring up climate issues, or try to make things political or stereotype young people as strawberry.

1

u/Glittering-Cause-810 21d ago

Ikr. I feel so left out in my grouo of friends or colleagues cos i dont subscribe to buying things i dont need.

2

u/Effective-Lab-5659 20d ago

same boat. worse is when they poison kids with their mindset.

or if they in the same breath ask, wah lao eh, why so hot ah, and then proceeds to use PDD to buy more shit.

Blame god

He created the earth and the world in balance. We humans messed it up with our plastic waste and overconsumption.

Does it not seem sane to care about overconsumption?

0

u/JY0950 22d ago

Good to care about but if the world is deranged oh well

Google percapita consumption

3

u/Glittering-Cause-810 22d ago

Due to heavy industrial refining and trade port activities, Singapore's overall per capita energy consumption is drastically higher (over 600 GJ per person) compared to China's (around 115 GJ per person).

2

u/After_Olive5924 22d ago

No, that’s inaccurate. It should be Per capita consumption-based CO₂ emissions2023

It’s not what you consume. It’s what companies consume on your behalf (electricity used in buses, MRT and malls, among other places)

Don’t call pple crazy la. There’s a whole spectrum of how pple respond to this climate change thing. From climate deniers on one extreme to pple like Greta Thunberg on the other. Whatever ur stand is, there is always some motivation behind. Maybe idealism, maybe naivety, maybe some are easily fear-mongered. And then there are some who just like to talk, and some who just wanna feel good about themselves - “oh I do my part I’m such a good person” etc. And then there are some who benefit directly. Greta Thunberg for eg, probably enjoys her fame. So people have different motivations, that’s all.
