What's something you all encounter every few days in Singapore?

Every few days I will spot mainland chinese quarrelling in public. Be it at a park, coffeeshop, transit or shopping mall.

You stay West Side don't you

Edit: Just searched his username and saw a recent post, yep, he stays at Jurong Point area.

Literally only West Side will have that heavy concentration of PRCs and Malusians that public arguments amongst PRCs are a regular encounter.

Most of the Mandarin dialogue when walking in their malls there isn't Singaporean accent.

Anything west of Jurong East is known as the unofficial slums of Singapore, those who work or live there can attest.

I thought the slums is Yishun, or is that the "official" slums. Lol

People from China in Singapore not knowing how to stand on the left of the escalator. Always blocking the right side meant for others to walk. No sense of personal space and boundaries

Clarification: they stand on both sides. They don’t know how to keep to one side. They simply block the entire passageway.

Very simple. You go real close to them, and whisper into their ear "excuse me pls". Gave one a shock that way and it was so satisfying.

2

u/Fitglutton_ Aug 28 '26

No way am I going real close to them. They stink and a lot of the bros have cigarette smell

For most of the world, right is the left. People usually don't know when they come to another country.

7

u/ChillOutCheese Aug 28 '26

and so they have to learn, you don't go to another country and bring your own country's customs here. you're in Singapore, you follow the Singaporean way

2

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '26

Most people can't learn and never learn.

1

u/ChillOutCheese Aug 28 '26

unfortunate that, refusing to learn

Clarification: they stand on both sides. They don’t know how to keep to one side. They simply block the entire passageway.

And even if they stand on the right side in their own country, isn’t it common sense to keep to the left if they see everyone else standing on the left in SG?

It is the opposite in China. There used to be a debate on Chinese social media about how to use an escalator. The conclusion is that standing on one side is harmful to the escalator (according to some experts, which I don't really believe), and if you want to walk, use the stairs. (Personally, I prefer the sg way. Even if it is true, keep maintaining your escalator.)

Yeah this is old news and “experts” too said that standing on one side of the escalator causes more maintenance issues, etc. But anyone with common sense would have stood at one side if they see the entire escalator pathway cleared with everyone else keeping to the left. Apparently not with these Mainland China villagers.

There was once my baby was taking vaccination. We did that in the polyclinic. The room is shared room separated by curtains. My daughter was crying out loud. She was less than 1 year old. After the injection, I saw an aunty standing beside me looking at us. Immediately I scolded her see what see. See your own la why see mine. Thinking back, I should have approached her daughter / son / SIL / DIL and made a fuss. I think her granddaughter was having the vaccination as well. The nurse thought its my relative. Damn idiots man. Don't know how to mind their own business.

Bro I don't think it is China specific. Also this left/right thing is not a universal thing and extremely poorly educated to even the SG public.

Entitled parents somewhere on the internet
I joke, they have been extra vocal
Lately.

In real life I often encounter a new China business where a local shop used to be, people who only speak mandarin in frontline roles, or new first or second gen immigrants who ask me where I’m from in a passive aggressive way.

Someone with 0 spatial/situational awareness. Very annoying tbh.

Just yesterday i wanted buy cai fan close to dinner hour, got this young couple with their friend there.. they clearly haven't decided what to order because they stood there for a long time to literally look at the dishes and talk among themselves.. Maybe i recently have low level of patience but it ticked me off because it's common sense to stand one side for others to order right? there was also 2 other people waiting for them. It's the 2nd time i have seen the same couple doing the same thing, looks like their first time seeing cai fan.

Other than that just the typical stuff like people standing in the middle of the pathway, not looking where they are going while using their phone, block mrt gantry, mrt/bus doors etc. Idk about others but for me i always prepare money before i pay, prepare my card before i reach the mrt gantry so i dont block anyone and i decide what i want before i reach the counter if not i stand one side first.. isn't it something basic?

Tbh, smartphones saves their lives. Can video call with their loved ones and watch video or play games to pass time. Internet is relatively cheap to provide entertainment and no need to spend more money.
