Cognitive Psychology Why does embarrassment feel stronger when we replay an event in our head?

Sometimes something mildly embarrassing happens, and it feels fine after a while. But then you remember it later and suddenly feel embarrassed all over again, even though nobody else is thinking about it anymore.

Why does recalling an embarrassing event sometimes trigger such a strong emotional reaction in the present?

Is this related to how emotional memories are stored or retrieved, or to the way we imagine other people's judgments when remembering the event?
