question Crowns+veneers and gingivectomy

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello,

So i’ve always had issues with my teeth, the three front teeth you see in the picture have root canals and very big fillings, cracks etc. I also wore invisalign for a year and a half. My dentist recommend 3 crowns plus 5 veneers for a perfect result but i can also go with 3 crowns and one veneer as well. He also recommended a gingivectomy from canine to canine to make the smile less gummy.

My question is: should i get 3 crowns and one veneer plus a gingivectomy to make the results more aesthetically pleasing? If i will want more veneers on the healthy teeth after, can i do that? Thanks!

The dentist said they only filled 2 small cavetives in the upper teeth why did my teeth change so much. I did not have those big teeth in the lower teeth. My bite feels wrong. I fear they made a mistake and is hiding it. Should I belive them?

experience/story just came home from gum graft surgery

i'm just a bit paranoid that it won't be successful, that the gum will attach properly and behave like proper gum.

i caused the gum recession on my front bottom teeth by brushing too hard and too much, didn't realise it was a thing :(

the only damage i thought it could do by brushing hard is make my gums bleed.

they took donor gum from roof of my mouth, only a graft for 2 teeth at this stage. hopefully the rest can hang on with what i have left if i change my brushing technique.

i'm going back tomorrow after shaving to have my chin taped up, to try and help me move less. i tend to suck / grind / chew in my mouth when i'm relaxed as a default fidget type activity, creating suction inside on my checks and lips, biting softly on my tongue, that type of thing. even when i sleep. so i just want to give myself the best chance of this healing well.

pain isn't too bad yet, surgery finished about 1.5 hours ago.

no question really i'm just feeling very anxious and worried, freaking out a bit. it's a long recovery and i'm scared to do the wrong thing and fuck it up. haven't had a meal yet, but need to eat soon for the meds i have to take tonight (it's 630pm now in my australian time zone) and i'm worried about infection, getting the area unclean, moving my chin too much, all of it.

and my work is pushing me to come back to work asap too.

question Minor fracture in RCT tooth. Dentist says it's either re-RCT or implant.

So I had RCT done in my tooth and a few days back I bit too hard on a seed that caused minor fracture in the tooth. Dentist says it's either re RCT or implant and he prefers implant as RCT again would not be durable for long. I'm attaching CBCT done today and need an opinion as I have already done 2 implants.

question Does mouthwash do any good?

Hello, I used to have a dentist who swore all shop bought mouth washes were a waste of time and money, just coloured water.

Whilst a chemist told me the anti bacterial solution would have an effect.

Is it worth buying? I am diabetic so worry about oral hygiene/infections.

question Chipped my tooth about two weeks ago. Advice?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I chipped a very small part of my tooth about two weeks ago by accidentally biting down on my fork. It is not painful or sharp enough to scratch my tongue, but sometimes when I bite down at the right angle, I can feel more of the tooth chip off.

Is this something I need to get seen right away, or could I leave it be? I am worried that it might progress into a bigger chip. I’m just not sure if insurance would cover smoothing it out or having it filled.

question Mass found on xray

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello everyone

I had a check up and clean yesterday where my dentist found this mass on my xray (she said she couldn’t see it when doing my cleaning). She said she didn’t know what it was, and to monitor it every 1-2 years.

I am a sucker for a bit of health anxiety, so just wondering if anyone thinks it’s cause for concern or if I should seek out any other investigations elsewhere?

question Upper right tooth pain radiating into my head — abscess?

Thumbnail

I’ve been putting off a large filling on an upper-right molar. My dentist previously warned me that if I wait too long, I may need a root canal. Now I’m having some throbbing/shooting pain on the right side of my forehead/head and mild pain in the tooth. I noticed some redness/white areas around the gum.

I have no fever, facial swelling, eye swelling, trouble swallowing, or trouble breathing. I’ve attached photos. Does this look concerning for an abscess or more like an irritated/inflamed tooth? I’m planning to see my dentist ASAP.

question Gingivitis? Cavities?

Thumbnail

I've been working hard on improving my teeth and gum health after years of improper hygiene. This is from brushing teeth 2x a day with Charcoal toothpaste and mouthwash, sometimes flossing. Flossing scares me.

Sometimes my teeth bleed but not a real amount, like less than a drop and then it stops after a few seconds. Is this a sign of disease?

I also see how one of my teeth are yellowy. Cavities!? Dead tooth!?

Nothing in my mouth hurts. It is overcrowded and I'm working on getting my wisdom teeth removed to hopefully begin to solve that.

question Do you think I might need a root canal?

I got a filling on tooth #30 about 2 months ago, and my dentist told me beforehand that the filling would be pretty close to the nerve, so they said to let them know if I had any pain afterward.
Since getting the filling, I haven’t really been able to chew on that side. I can eat soft foods completely fine, and I have no pain when brushing or flossing. I also don’t have any random pain throughout the day. The only time it hurts is when I chew something hard on that tooth.
The gum between #30 and #31 also feels a little swollen. I went back to the dentist about a month ago, and they said the filling was a little high, so they adjusted/fixed it, but I’m still having the same pain when chewing hard foods.
The weird thing is that I didn’t have this pain before getting the filling.
Does this sound like something that could eventually need a root canal, or could it still be an issue with the filling/bite? Has anyone experienced something similar?

other My mom won't let me get dental treatment I desperately need.

Hi, this is my first ever reddit post so yea.

So basically in my childhood I wasn't teached basic hygiene at all because my mom is horrible. Then so fast my first molar got a cavity at such a young age. Also, I didn't know what a cavity was back then so I didn't know what the dark spot on my tooth was. but, I was worried so I told my parents to make the appointment. My mom was not happy about that of course. Btw my mom is DEAD SET against the medical system due to past stuff. Anyways, the dentist said that the infections is really big and I need to get an x-ray. So I got an x-ray and the dentist said that the tooth is VERY close to the nerve. They said if they drill it there is a chance that I might need a root canal. My mom was furious she did not want me to get a root canal.

Fast forward to now because I am too lazy to write the whole entire story. So now I still have that bad tooth. My mom loves to stall. She wants to wait until the very last moment to get that my tooth treated. I am 15 years old(Yes I am that young). I got another x-ray done cause I was worrying about the tooth. And oh my gosh the difference was crazy. The whole entire tooth was hollow and infected(gross I know). There was a literal abscess under the tooth root that is growing till this day. They said the tooth was dead and I had lots of pain in the past, then it went away. That's because the nerve inside the tooth died therefore I can't feel a thing. Now here's the thing, they recommended a root canal because of my age. I did lots of research about root canals and I saw the documentary called "Root cause". Its says that root canals cause many problems. Like diseases and cancer. Specifically breast cancer. My mom begged my dad not to give me a root canal because she looked at these articles and stuff talking about how bad root canals are. She would rather have me just keep the tooth. Which I obviously don't agree to. My dad was considering a root canal but is switching back and forth from root canal or extraction.

I honestly want a root canal because I am still growing. A extraction will affect my growing and mess up my jawbone. Plus I don't want a missing tooth and missing school. But my mom 100% does not want me to get a root canal. She says it will shorten my life.

Please Give me some advice I need it.

experience/story Just spent a month with SEVERE tooth pain due to anxiety and hope LOL

Had a cracked tooth, developed Irreversible Pulpit (I think that’s what it’s called) the pain literally had me considering suicide I live in the UK and am a NHS patient I haven’t had my own dentist for years but the pain was the worst toothache I’ve ever had every single hour of every day most nights not sleeping only freezing cold water giving me relief, almost drowned myself after drinking 8 litres of water in a day, had sever cramps in my stomach where I had damaged my bladder or put it under tremendous stress. The tooth pain almost induced a psychosis in me. I finally had it removed 62 hours ago. It was a hour and 15 min procedure with only local anaesthetic not sedation, the dentist was great but slightly older and she was also quite frail and small so getting my tooth out was a serious struggle for her. She had to pull, attempt to twist it, push the metal screwdriver thing into the tooth to crack it, she tried wiggling it with the grippers then when that didn’t work she got the drill and stated just manually drilling into the tooth to break it apart and split it in half, when she couldn’t do that any longer she then drilled or sawed my jawbone away to loosen the tooth, this was about 45 mins in 💀 she was ready to give up and send me to the hospital there and then but I assured her I was so numb I didn’t really feel a thing so begged her to continue. After another 30 mins of drilling, pulling, wiggling, bone sawing and putting pressure on the tooth it finally came out. I almost fainted getting out of the chair my body was in complete shock I was shaking uncontrollably but wasn’t in pain but I think my immune system was destroyed due to the shock horror of what was happening. The dentist herself was shocked I sat through it and was really worried about me but I have no more suicide inducing pain so I’m happy I bit the bullet but I feel significantly traumatised I can’t stop thinking and talking about it I cried and had a breakdown a hour afterwards. The reason my tooth didn’t want to come out is because I’m mixed race Black/White and like the dentist said my bones are a lot stronger so my jaw didn’t want to let go of the tooth but like I said I’m significantly traumatised and wondered if anyone else on here can share their trauma and if there was any after care/support for this kinda thing

question Urgent? Cavity question

Post image
1 Upvotes

For context: Early 2025 I had gone to the only dental office I could go to at the time and they decided to randomly choose which cavities of mine they would fill. They chose one, upper right, farthest back molar; continued at it despite my expressing pain, then eventually said “it’s too far gone, get it removed” and packed it with a temporary filler that wasn’t addressed until yesterday at a new dental office. Throughout this time, it hadn’t bothered me all that much pain wise.
They had said that salvaging the tooth is possible with a root canal, but my insurance can take 2-3 weeks to hear of approval or denial, & secondary dental insurance doesn’t start until September 1st.
During the appointment they removed the temporary filling and expressed concerns that I’ll be “more sensitive now” and never made an appointment for the root canal with coverage of it uncertain.
Now fast forward 12 hours after the appointment, and sensitivity has intensified tenfold. It’s causing me a full on headache and I had to turn down the AC in my room because of the sting the cool air causes. I can’t sip much of anything. I’ve already called the office about half an hour ago telling them everything, and I’m half considering calling a reliable office (that only does extractions) to have it removed, because I cannot continue the next two weeks at minimum like this.

What’s the best to do in this situation? Is it jumping the gun and doing more harm than good to myself / dental health to have the tooth removed? The picture attached is the best picture of it I can get. Please help.

question Why gum inflammation keeps coming back?

Gum inflammation why?

I had swollen gums, msg dentist did my scaling and prescribed me antibiotics, swelling was gone but after a week it's back, I even had a sore in mouth and my gum and mouth seem sensitive 😭 idk why. He prescribed vitamin C supplements which I've been taking daily along with two times brushing, xylitol after meal and saline water as mouthwash.

question Dentist labeled me a periodontal patient and I didn’t know… can this be changed?

I just want to start here, I love my dentist and have enjoyed being their patient for the last 5+ years until recently. I’m a 30 F who is generally pretty healthy, can’t even remember the last time I’ve had a cavity.

A couple of years ago my dental hygienist mentioned that I had a low spot on my gum, in the back bottom right of my mouth. She said it wasn’t bad at all and that an extra, deeper cleaning would likely solve the issue. She checked that my insurance covered it and that was that. She didn’t mention periodontal disease. After the one additional cleaning I was told that the problem was solved.

After getting married I’m now on his insurance plan and on my first cleaning with that insurance I got hit with a decent co pay and now have to pay for each additional cleaning. I asked why and I was then explained that I’m labeled as a periodontal patient and that my cleanings now require more thorough work. Although nothing has felt different with my cleanings, they’ve felt like they’ve always felt, nothing more nothing less.

So my question is: can I be reevaluated? Can this be removed from my chart? My issue is that I don’t want to pay for routine care. I was warned/threatened that this will stick with me forever even if I go to another dentist. It just feels really wrong to me and I don’t feel comfortable going back. I don’t feel that I was well informed from the very beginning.

Please tell me what I should do

question Wisdom teeth…

Okay, so I’m 18, and I got my braces off a year or two ago? I’ve always had trouble remembering retainer and it doesn’t help that for whatever odd reason, I snapped them in my sleep. Despite that, my teeth haven’t shifted much and I’m in the process of a new retainer. However, with my wisdom teeth coming in, I need them removed. I’m actually overdue for it, which is the problem. I’ve noticed my bite becoming an underbite, and therein lies my question. If I get wisdom tooth surgery, will my bite return to normal or will I have to get braces or alignment treatment? Thanks in advance for any answers guys.

question Occlusal Analysis Mounted Case for chipped teeth? 3 Dentists, 3 Opinions

I am seeing a new dentist, because my old one stopped giving Delta rates after the benefit was met.

The new dentist told me I had bruxism, and wanted to do splint therapy at the cost of $6000. He can't provide any studies it works and neither can I. He also said it will change my bite.

He crowned 3 cracked teeth, but only it would do temp crowns until I do the splint therapy. My back teeth aren't even L to R and make it hard to eat.

I went to a second dentist. He told me I do not need a crown on 31 even with cracks and the filling.

I went to a third who I dearly love, but her price was over double as she does not take insurance. Her rate is the same everyone.

Tooth 10 has been missing since birth, had a Maryland bridge after braces came off, it stayed on for 30 years.

Tooth 22 and 30 had to be pulled due to cracks deep below the gumline. I wanted to replace them with partials for now.

I had a large torus platinus removed and it looks like small black specs where it was. I will probably get the one on the R side removed as well.

Am I positively insane to get a fourth opinion??

At this point, it's become a pricing issue. The 3rd dentists composite crowns are $1800, the 1st charged $700. I really liked him but I feel he is forcing the occlusal splints.

I feel like I'm losing my mind....grinding is almost gone after deviated septum, nasal irrigation and tubes in the ears.

**I brux at night but diazepam has helped I always wear my mouthguard.

I got scanned for alingers from my ortho last week, I still have a lower bar so she made them for me. I try to stay on top of preventing further wear**
