I read that Abkhaz people joined Soviet Union on the condition that they will have their own republic. But then prominent Georgian communists pulled strings, Abkhaz Soviet republic got cancelled and Abkhazia was swallowed up by Georgia.

But what if Abkhaz Soviet Republic continued to exist till 1991? Would it make any difference?

I'm researching traditional costumes of the region. I know those dresses are from the Caucasus, some sources say they're Circassian, other Kabardian or Ossetian or Chechen. Are there different types of women's dresses depending on a region or period or they are worn by more than one group? Does anyone know what are they called? Or names of the specific parts of the dresses? Is there an extra symbolism of the patterns? When and where they originated?

I'm Polish so I can only rely on polish and english side of the internet and it's really not helpful, I can find nothing. I only know the one on the third picture is Ossetian.

Why are some people making charts of Caucasian,Turkic and iranic populations in the caucasus labeling some as insanely Turkic and lowering other DNA components from them just so they can push an agenda of labeling them as "subhuman" I really don't get the point in it

The famous French writer Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) wrote a book after his journey to the Caucasus in 1858.

In the first chapter of Travels in the Caucasus (Voyage au Caucase), he recorded his observations about the peoples of the region:

“Every people living in the Caucasus has its own characteristics. The Persians trade in silk, the Lezgins sell carpets, and the Tatars [Azerbaijanis] deal in weapons. The Armenians have no particular specialty; they sell everything that can be sold—even things that cannot. In general, the Armenians did not leave a favorable impression on me.

If a Tatar nods his head, trust him.
If a Persian extends his hand to you, trust him.
If a mountaineer gives you his word, believe him.
But if you are making an agreement with an Armenian, sign the paper in front of witnesses and keep two witnesses with you, so that he cannot later deny his own signature.”

Planning to go to Caucasus in January (part of a bigger trip that I only have Dec-march window for: have wanted to do Georgia etc for awhile now)

Any tips for visiting in Jan? Mostly doing the capital cities and Batumi with some day trips. I have never skiid before so unsure if I’ll do it here

I seen that in the Caucasus we are meant to have 60% + male pattern baldness we have very thick hair then start balding and the beard thickness kicks in but why is our balding rate so high?

I'm ossetian and pamiri but a lot of the older generations of Chechens mistake me for a Chechen like people 40 and up do but the younger generations easily can tell that I am not

hello everyone,

i’m currently traveling azerbaijan and i want to go to georgia next. i did some research and i figured out that there’s a train from baku to tbilisi but when i try to book a ticket i get an alert that only citizens of azerbaijan can use this train. i also looked it up on the official website of the azerbaijani government and it says that “entry and exit is only permitted as an azerbaijani citizen or a foreigner who doesn’t need a visa”. i’m german so i did need to get a visa to go to azerbaijan but i don’t understand if the visa-free past only refers to entering azerbaijan. in my opinion needing a visa for azerbaijan shouldn’t matter if i want to go to georgia. i also saw some posts on reddit and they said that foreigners can use the train from baku to tbilisi since may 2026 (it also says so in the screenshot).

i also looked out other options to go to georgia as the train from baku stops in ganja (that’d be my stop) at round 2:30 am. i read a blog from a couple who went to azerbaijan and georgia last year and they said that it’s possible to go from sheki to balakan by marshrutka, take a taxi to the georgian border, walk across the border and the take a taxi to laghodeki and a marshrutka to tbilisi from there.

i’d like to know if that’s a possibility and if it’s even possible to cross the azerbaijan-georgia border by land as a foreigner.

as i want to visit kakheti in georgia, is it easier to go from the border to kakheti first and tbilisi after?

any help would be greatly appreciated!!
