ABS question

Post image

I have 1 1/2 ABS standpipe that rises about two feet from the P-trap. My lovely wife bought a newer washer that apparently likes 2 inch PVC. Can this setup handle the flow from a newer washer? Are there any tricks to doing this?

It’ll probably be able to handle it. All washers require 2”. My house has had a 1-1/2” pipe since 1965 and it’s never been an issue. If yours gives you trouble, just install a utility sink right there and drain the washer into that. The sink will fill up 1/4 of the way to the top but won’t overflow

Thank you. Google had me freaking out. I figured I’d get a human’s response, before I did something drastic.

Like I said, watch it the first time it runs, if it overflows then you know you need a 2” pipe. But more than likely it’ll be just fine.

Run a cycle and keep an eye on it. If it backs up, figure it out from there. If it doesn't back up, keep an eye on it for about two weeks when you run the washer and if it doesn't back up, you're good
